Kosovo does not set a precedent to any other region on the world.
Russia is again showing that they can not behave like a respectful member of the Security Council.
The Russians are quick to claim that Kosovo will set a danger precedent to the rest of the world, but they fail to explain how. Furthermore they deny that the situation in Georgia regarding the republic there is the same as Kosovo.
It surprised you that all the countries that oppose the independency claim that their particular conditions are complete opposite to Kosovo.
The Cypriots is just an example. They oppose the independency but they in the same time claim that northern Cyprus is complete different to Kosovo. The Rumanians regarding the Moldova situation is the same.
Not to mention the Spanish either…
Is bizarre to think how the Russians will try to adjust their positions. However, I have to remind you guys that the Russians are always against the West.
It would not be a good thing if they were to agree.

It is indeed a great pity that the US does not uphold international law and bypasses the UNSC all the time, their arrogance sickens me too.

This is why we have categories 3 and 4, when it should be only 1 and 2, but yes, no one is able to change that.

Russians have found the cheapest and the most harmless way to drop prices of Serbian properties and businesses. For every UN meeting they organize to "support" Serbia, prices of anything they want to buy in Serbia drop 10-15%, and the Serbian people watch their leaders get richer and their country get poorer and more Asian.

We Albanians have no reasons to turn Kosova/o into a Palestine. We are happy with the way things are now, free from Serbian influence, calm and peaceful. Serbia has all the reasons to turn Kosova/o into a Palestine. A Kosovo resembling Palestine would remain an open conflict for a long time hence its status would not be changed.
If the international made Palestine independent 40 years ago to be then it wouldn't be in the mess it is now. We've had two parties talking and then not talking for 40-50 years and all we've seen is violence and more violence, because Palestine and Israel have talked for years but never agreed for anything. Having learned from Palestine the international community backed Kosovo/a's independence saving us and Europe from 50 years of violence. Serbia and Kosova/o can no longer peacefully exist under one roof. It is naive to believe the opposite. Not after what happened recently. It is as naive as the chance for Palestine to live peacefully under Israel's roof.

Taiwan is an economic success story and also forced to become a military power with China waiting on its' doorstep with the strong support of the US.

Northern Cyprus has been illegally occupied by Turkish forces which number over 30,000 with the tacit support of the United States against fellow NATO member Greece. Only Turkey has recognized the renegade Northern Cypriots.

Kosovo is an illegal state created again with the tacit support of the US but with the support of it's "coalition partners" namely most of the EU countries which also invaded Iraq without a UN resolution.

In essence, international order has been further fragmented and all deals are off becuase no country has the right to reference the international rule of law because it does not exist.

In this way, Hitler destroyed the League of Nations founded by Woodrow Wilson of the United States after WWI.

Does the world need the UN?

Of course it does, because world peace is at stake and the EU and the US do not control the world yet.

It's not really going to change anything. Essentially it will look like this in terms of the 203 an three states worldwide as per the regulations of the Montevideo Convention of 1933:

1. 192 generally recognized states and members of the UN (no need to write them here).

2. One state generally recognized but not a member of the UN (The Vatican City).

3. 4 states lacking international recognition, but are defined as states in the body of customary international law (Taiwan, Palestine, Sahrawi Republic and of course, Kosovo).

4. 6 entities lacking recognition who declared and claim independence (Abkhazia, Transnistria, Nagorno-Karabakh, South Ossetia, Somaliland and Northern Cyprus).

That is how it is. This meeting is a waste of time as those states who have recognized Kosovo will not now go and "unrecognize" them, and Russia and China will not let Kosovo into the UN. End of story, Kosovo falls into the third category, like Taiwan, the Sahwari Republic and Palestine. These people continue to live normal lives, they do not need the UN, neither does Kosovo.

Are you suggesting that somehow law and accordance get wiped off the table according to donation?
Regardless of amount, i'm sure that Russia pays a larger percentage per capita than the US..
Which, if i'm not mistaken, was the same country that was guilty of not contributing enough..
While we're there, let's give Ted Turner personal freedoms to make up new rules...

Look Ahmet.......Fact of the matter is, if Russia's veto isn't taken seriously, how can anybody elses be respected??

Russia has a VETO and respects the UN charter when it comes to preserving the territorial integrity of sovereign states.

However, lots of the UN costs could be significantly reduced if it wasn't for the complete mess the US continues to create throughout the world. Why should Russia pay for it? It is probably paying more than it should!

Bruce - The US seems to believe that it owns the UN while its arrears to the organisation currently total over $1.3 billion!!

Ahmet - I am not surprised that you're so worried when things are so shaky legally and politically. I just hope sincerely that violence doesn't break out and innocent people of any group don't suffer while the politicians sit comfortably in their various countries gambling with lives.

To quote fellow poster 'ZK UK': ..."the NO recognition team and those conditional on EU, UN or Serbian agreement has grown to 67.

"So we still have about 165 countries supporting Serbia against 27. The recognition camp should stall shortly."

Things are far from over so I wouldn't be quite so smug, Ahmet.

By trying to play too many games, Russia has practically played itself out of the game in Kosova. It hasn't been three weeks yet and already 30 countries have recognized Kosova, which shows that Russia's influence in the world affairs is still pretty much a wishful thinking. By blocking Ahtisaari in the UNSC, Russia wanted to humiliate the US and the West generally, however now it is Russia that looks powerless and clueless. When UNSC appointed Ahtisaari, the Contact Group, of which Russia was a part of defined a set of principles for Ahtisaari to follow. But when the plan came up for a vote at the UNSC, Russia in an effort to sabotage it, added another principle: that the plan had to be agreed by Serbia exclusively. Although they didn't bring up such condition before the CG and before Ahtisaari started the negotiations. Had Russia played by the rules, it would have found itself in a much more respectable position today. But bullying and thuggery hardly makes any friends, no matter how much you yell about international law.

Not so fast Bruce, your USA has not paid its dues to the UN for a number of years now (check wiki). Apparently your country also dislikes the UN. Maybe the UN head quarters should be relocated to a country that does pay its dues...

Russia is not eben a top 15 contributor to the UN (its share is similar to Belgium and 1/22 of that of the US).
