I like the idealists who portray the EU with a heavy dose of utopia. It truly reflects how ridiculous and impractical the EU is. The EU is a farce, made up of competing interests who are all looking to steal a piece of what's left of Free Europe (that is Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia, etc). It is truly too bad Russia has to be so, well (historically thinking), Russian. Imagine a counter-weight to the EU stretching all the way to the Meditteranean? People please! This "prestigious organization", as Michael likes to refer to it, is nothing more than an attempt by competing European Antagonists to achieve peacefully what they failed to achieve during two ugly world wars...and all the wars before them.

Michael John!

Serbia today has a stronger economy than both Bulgaria and Romania and they are both part of the EU already so therefore your argument about Serbias economy and a possible EU membership holds no water.

Regarding your comments that Serbia lack some democratic values I just wonder what you mean? Can you please further develop your thoughts on that one please?

EU is no "prestigious organization" as you put it but an organization formed to perserve peace in Europe firstly. You only seem to look at the economic aspect. EU is also an organization formed to meet and to compete against american interests and capital. Only a united Europe can compete and stand up against strong american and asian economies, policies and influencies.

Another Canadian Serb:

I hope you don't expect Serbia to be cut some slack in order to gain entry to the EU. Membership to this prestigious organization requires fulfilling a rather rigorous set of conditions. Serbia, at this point, is deficient in many areas, therefore, precluding entry to the EU at this time. I'm sure you are well aware of these many glaring weaknesses and surely agree that it is quite premature for the EU to grant membership to Serbia.

What will happen is that Serbia will be given a remedial plan which it must fulfill. Serbia has a long way to go for it to qualify. In addition to the many economic issues in which it is deficient, Serbia has the serious problem of lacking a number of democratic values. However, as the Chinese say, "a journey begins only after a few steps are taken." We wish Serbia well in all its future endeavors.

Look! It's more empty promises stringing Serbia along for another 8 years. Why doesn't the EU as a whole Entertain Serbia's ascension to club memebership. Why do these small states throw out Words of Wisdom? Last month it was the Dutch that were delaying Serbia's entry to the EU. When is that Referendum going to take place?
