Why were the citizens of Serbia never asked directly whether they would like to join the EU or not? Anyway: time has come for that - and Europe should get an answer, what Serbian majority wants.

Sirius Black,
tell my you think Serbia has yet to enter the Exclusive EU Club. Also, please explain why the EU keeps knocking on Serbia's door. Maybe the EU are looking for a Trick or a Treat? Well won't they be surprised on REFERENDUM DAY.
If you think that the surrounding States will not be affected by Serbia's downward spiral, then you are just in denial.

I am amazed with a lot of pro Serbian posters here who think that joining the EU is easy and simple.

You shurely realise that even if Serbia hands over Karadzic and Mladic, even if Serbia sings the SAA, and even if Serbia recognizes Kosova/o, they might still never be invited to join the EU.

Remember that EU is not a "bingo hall" but it's more like an "invites only exclusive members club" and I wouldn't mind betting that Russia's friends will never have the privilege of receiving invites.

God bless ...

To all Posters,
all comments here are futile in that Serbia will never enter the EU without the capture of Ratko Mladic and Radovan Karadzic. The only reason these DIPLOMATS hold out their hand is to make organizations such as EU seem like they care about the Serbian cause. When infact the EU community is null and void in the support of Serbia. The EU's only concern is Financial and purely Business Oriented.

The question cannot be a simple “should Serbia enter the EU', yes or no?” The issue is not whether Serbia should join the EU, but in what form it should join.

Should the Serbian government accept the EU diktat and join without Kosovo? Or should it join as a sovereign state with Kosovo at its heart?

Make no mistake this is a knockout punch for the EU in Serbia. If the referendum is held the EU will be thrown out of Serbia for good.

We can expect massive EU and US pressure on Serbia to abandon this referendum.

This is a loaded question, the type of which has never been seen in any other country holding a referendum on the EU.

The question should be simple 'should Serbia enter the EU', yes or no.

As a compromise we could also ask another question relating to Kosovo, 'if the EU conditions Serbian EU membership with recognition of Kosovo then should Serbia join the EU or not'?

Although if we ask the second question everybody involved will pat themselves on the back and we will have not resolved the issue.

In the end this is a debate on the EU, not a debate on Kosovo - as we know the large majority support Kosovo in Serbia.

And who said the DSS are unreasonable! This is a very sensible idea.

Olf, if Serbia signed the SAA there will be no reason for a referrendum as Serbia would have already lost Kosovo. The EU could rightfully claim that Kosovo is an EU issue and justify its illegal mission.

Without Serbia's signature, Kosovo will never be permitted into the EU without it being an integral part of Serbia!

Like I said, put this through and watch the US/EU/Albanians get very very annoyed. Serbia still holds the key!

Question asking Serbs in Serbia proper whether they want to keep Kosova at any cost or give up Kosova and carry on with EU integration is being asked rather to early.
This question should be asked latter, after Serbia had the SAA signed and people of Serbia taste the benefits of EU, only then Serbs in Serbia proper can answer this question. In addition, this answer would allow Serbian authorities to accept the Independence of Kosova without them taking the responsibility for it.

As it is, this proposal should not stand since people of Serbia are still under the effect of recent events in Serbia and Kosova.

This is very cheap try by DSS to gain the power.

This is yet another example of the kind of "leadership" that resulted in the years of sanctions/bombing etc. If the DSS wants to send a clear signal to the EU they should have a referendum with the question "Kosovo is Serbia ? Yes or No". Then, when 90% of the voters agree that Kosovo is Serbia, the point is made. EU negotiations can then resume. Why pick a fight you have 0% chance of winning ?

Fair enough and I just say finally. In that case our politicians should have clear picture what people of Serbia want. It will help all of the politicians in what direction to lead their policy and clearly define priorities.
