I am proud of all you Serbs and non-Serbian friends out there for saying it like it is to this arrogant Yank. A person whose country has 1 out of 100 adults in jail (and 1 in 15 of all African-Americans) and that has a huge number of serious flaws in its society should be very quiet before critizising Serbia. Be so brave to hang your own dirty laundry outside.

I am against violence in general and against damaging of the embassy in particular, I'm sorry that it happened. But that sad, I can't help but notice perplexing American hypocrisy and double standards, once again. There are countless examples to choose from, I picked this one:

I'm sure we all vividly remember March of 2004 riots in Kosovo. KFOR troops who were supposed to protect us just stood-by while Albanian looters were destroying our priceless historical heritage (and killing Serbs as well).

According to an article in Der Spiegel, when a group of Albanian rioters attacked the Serbian monastery of Holy Archangels during the March 2004 riots, the approach road could have been easily blocked with a few armored vehicles, especially since master sergeant Udo Wambach and 19 soldiers of the Bundeswehr were stationed inside the 14th century monastery.
The Albanian demonstrators sent a delegation under a white flag to the KFOR soldiers and ensured them that nothing bad would happen to them that “we only want to burn down the monastery.” The KFOR troops evacuated the monks and the monastery was then burned down.

What was the reaction of KFOR leadership? Punishment? Degradation in rank? Nothing of the sort. They praised these soldiers for their "prudent behavior"! Can you believe it? Master sergeant Wambach received a commendation for his “outstanding act” from KFOR. According to the commendation, the sergeant avoided “by his prudent behavior and courageous action, an escalation of violence, preventing bloodshed and protecting the human lives entrusted to him”. German defense minister Peter Struck praised the KFOR soldiers because “They reacted rationally, preventing an escalation and thus protecting human lives".

So, rather than complaining about their embassy being burned down, the U.S. Government should be commending Serbia’s police for their “prudent behavior”. Police action could have hurt someone or caused an escalation in the rioting if they had tried to stop the crowd from burning down the embassy. After all, the embassy was just a building - it’s not like it was an irreplaceable 14th century UNESCO world heritage site.

I would appreciate mr Munter, if he will agree with me. Burning my house in Metohia by Albanians in 1999, has at least the same crime level, like damaging US embassy building in Belgrade. He, and his staff will enter their offices tomorrow. I will not enter my house, who knows how long?!

When are those American politicians and diplomats going to stop whining about the minimal damage done to their embassy that night?

The most dreadful thing to happen on that occasion was the death of that young man. I didn't hear Mr Munter expressing any sympathy to his family. It seems that a few scorched American walls is all that's important to these people. But what can we expect as they've shown on many occasions that human life is not among their priorities.

The fact that you didn't like it doesn't mean it wasn't there. So please stop with this unsustainable rubbish. What is unsustainable is your solution to the problem. Now we have an even bigger problem.
(Peggy, 3 March 2008 13:15) "

Peggy we don't have a bigger problem at all. Its only the Serbians and those under the Serbian influence that have a problem. US Albanians and the rest of the world are doing just fine. Be more specific next time.

As for 1244 of course that is the solution, and independence is in line with 1244. Read it again. Nobody broke 1244. It stated that sovereignty of Yugoslavia is guaranteed for the provisional period until the final status is decided in accordance with Rambuillet talks which states that the status is to be determined through the will of people of Kosova/o. So you see the people have decided that independence of Kosova/o is their final status hence the sovereignty of Jugoslavia can no longer be guaranteed because the transitional period is over. That falls perfectly in line with 1244, and indeed like you said 1244 was the solution, and that's what we did, follow 1244.

In a long run it is generally not a good idea to be in US's and EU's bad books.

I think if Serbia carries to defy US ad EU it will become isolated once again. I am not saying this because I care for Serbia, unfortunately I can not pretend that I do. I am aware that a lot of you here will say "we don't care" but, your children and their children will care. I am sure that future generations of young Serbs and other people in Serbia will want to have better lives. The way Serbia's government is behaving and which behaviour looks to continue indefinitely, future doesn't look good.

You certainly read a lot into the actions of a hundred or so drunken hooligans. I trust you are aware that the number of peaceful protesters on that day numbered in the hundreds of thousands.

Strange that you don't give the same relative weight to their actions.

The situation in Kosovo was not 'sustainable' because of promises made by the US in contravention of the autonomy requirement built into 1244.

The problem is that the US decided to impose a collective punishment on the democratic will of the people of Serbia.

At least from my vantage point, most Serbs do not support the embassy attacks. If they did, there would have been more people at the riots, and the embassy would not have been repaired and restored asa quickly as it was.

But at the same time, there continues to be a wide gap of understanding between US policy in the Balkans and Serbian. I honestly don't think Mr. Munter has any particular agenda to push of his own. He's basically the voice of the State Department in Belgrade and says what he's told to say. Still the fact that there has been no attempt to come to some sort of meeting of the mind between Washington and Belgrade, and that both sides, but particularly Washington as the bigger power, has shown little to no understanding of Serbia's position, nor has lent an ear to its legitimate grievances, continues, I think, to exacerbate an already tense situation.

The USA should blame its own government for bombing civilian targets in Serbia in 1999 and recognizing a state in Serbia's recognized borders (both against the UN's wishes, hence both outside of international law).

Cause and effect. The USA cannot expect cooperation from the Serbian government.

I wholly condemn the attacks on the embassy and the border posts, but on the other hand, I can understand why they came about, I just don't see why the US government doesn't.

Olf

Attacks on Embassies of western and other countries will never be forgotten by those countries. Least they could do is protest but, according to some in here they have no right of complaint.
Burning the empty Embassies, parked cars of residents, looting, throwing Molotov cocktails, stealing etc, brought back to everyone the memory of the same that Serbian forces did in Kosova 1999 wit a little change, there where no Albanian civilians to kill, rape, burn and drive out. All these are fresh to everyone around here and of course to the entire world. After all these

And who the hell you think you are Mr Munter? Who are you to tell Serbia’s officials what they can say or not? Mr Munter, you are just an ambassador of a foreign country and therefore you have no authority to say people in Serbia what they can talk about. If you do it otherwise and protest over someone’s speech, it is called suppression of the speech freedom and implies dictatorship.

If you don’t like to be in Serbia, please do us all favour and leave the country, since you are not from any help over here.

I just wonder who invited him to be guest of some TV station and who continues to promote the USA’s attitudes and agenda in Serbia. Who gives this man a space in media? Why is he so important? Why there was not a guest of Slovakian ambassador, for an example, or Romanian? Why the hell they continue to speak about the attacks on embassies like something terrible happened (apart from one dead person). The thing is that Mr Munter did not express his condolences for the death of one young angry man trying to figure it out why that young man was so furious? No, instead, Mr Munter is still speaking about the attack of embassy which is just collateral damage. Besides, this collateral damage is USA’s favourite explanation for every mess they create world wide. Therefore, Serbia should just replies him that embassy was just a collateral damage that night.

And Mr Munter, please, before you state something fake as you care for people not for the borders, then go back to USA and take good care of your black population that is frequently oppressed by the whites. Give those people free education, give them free access to health care institutions, give them anything and make them feel equal.

"the U.S. embassy is "there to help the country on its European path"."

- has anyone in the EU been asked what the hell the US is playing at ? Here is the 'US' ambassador to Serbia believing that he is a representative of the EU and can sway EU membership - does he really know who he represents? what an odd statement to make!

"“If the ministers and state secretaries decide they do not want to communicate with me, that will only slow down the process of offering help,” Munter warned."

- what help does he mean by 'help' - total amputation of Serbia into many parts perhaps ?

" “some are my friends, but since it is the decision of the government I will let them decided whether they want to meet with me.” "

- who exactly wants to be "friends" with such an ambassador who insults Serbia's sovereignity and adds further insult to injury in suggesting it was Serbia's fault!!!

"Munter also said that the U.S. "does not believe that the solution it supports for Kosovo’s final status breaks any international laws". "

- in which case as the US ligation society saying goes - "see ya all in court!".

"“In such a situation, where an international mission is sent in order to find a final status solution for Kosovo, the status was not determined ahead of time, but would be opened once the solution was found,” Munter said."

- so why is there no UN SC sanction for this solution if indeed it was a solution?

Beyond which we all are only too aware that the US falsly promised just that to the KLA terrorists with Holbrooke, Albright and Clark admitting as much in their memoirs! Ironically Montgomery stated it as US policy and reason for 1999 bombing in his latest article published on B92;

"It views the Serbian military and police response to the KLA to be massive, indiscriminant overkill. The CNN images of hundreds of thousands of fleeing Kosovo Albanians arriving in hastily erected refugee camps in Macedonia, Albania, and Montenegro was the "final straw" which sealed American opinion that independence for Kosovo for the only answer." So you see the people have decided that independence of Kosova/o is their final status hence the sovereignty of Jugoslavia can no longer be guaranteed because the transitional period is over. That falls perfectly in line with 1244, and indeed like you said 1244 was the solution, and that's what we did, follow 1244.

I was just wondering what were the Marines doing on the 21st? Beside partying in Dedinje and chatting the girls is it not their duty to protect the Ambassy from inside? Was nobody in the building at the time?
Hmmm.. smells line an arrangement btw Us un Kostunica: provoking justification for the US mess in Kosova against prime-minister (president) chair for life.

"the U.S. embassy is "there to help the country on its European path"."

Beyond which we all are only too aware that the US falsly promised just that to the KLA terrorists with Holbrooke, Albright and Clark admitting as much in their memoirs! Ironically Montgomery stated it as US policy and reason for 1999 bombing in his latest article published on B92;

"It views the Serbian military and police response to the KLA to be massive, indiscriminant overkill. The CNN images of hundreds of thousands of fleeing Kosovo Albanians arriving in hastily erected refugee camps in Macedonia, Albania, and Montenegro was the "final straw" which sealed American opinion that independence for Kosovo for the only answer." "
- Foundation of Sand, Montgomery http://www.b92.net/eng/insight/opinions.php?yyyy=2008&mm=03&nav_id=48112

- thus a previous US amabassador to Serbia admits it only days before and yet Muntur carries on with failing attempts at pulling the wool over the worlds eyes!! Munter, at least be open with your Serbian Minister "friends" and explain your deceit if any of them actually wanted to be associated with such deceit!

Oh what a tangled web we weave and its unbelievable how the US continue to deceive...

Solve the problem of poverty that you have in your mighty USA by stop using the tax money in useless wars all over the world.

this is such a disgrace, i imagine that some of these people are actually relatively decent human beings privately but must peddle this disgrace to earn a living... it's not an easy way to make a buck, no one should think otherwise. no laws broken... what do borders matter... :) i guess this is how gangs operate, they have laws of their own that us regular citizens dont understand, and they dont understand our laws. anyway, one of this guy's friends?, mr. dinkic, that lowlies of all serbian politicians, was explaining on tv last night that the constitution is a silly piece of paper and why is dss so stuck on the constitution! i wonder, and beckovic who interviewed him also wondered, did he find all this out after he got instructions? so why am i posting this digression under this article? hmm :)
in short, normally all i have to say to this man with an unfortunate surname is to leave this country, just as our ambassador has left his. but this time i'll add: you can organize propaganda with all you politicians in serbia barking in all your media 24-7 for the next 2 years. you wont change our minds. we reject you and your policy and those peddling it here. kosovo is serbia.

Mr Munter, the solution to Kosovo problem has always been right under your nose.

It's called resolution 1244.

The fact that you didn't like it doesn't mean it wasn't there. So please stop with this unsustainable rubbish. What is unsustainable is your solution to the problem. Now we have an even bigger problem.

you have just perfectly described the 1992 Los Angeles,USA RIOTS and possibly Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Have you taken this excerpt form those above Articles.

Olf:

You certainly read a lot into the actions of a hundred or so drunken hooligans. I trust you are aware that the number of peaceful protesters on that day numbered in the hundreds of thousands.

Strange that you don't give the same relative weight to their actions.

As for your understanding of the concept of justice, let's just say it seems to be slightly coloured & leave it at that.
