Koštunica: EU membership only with Kosovo

At the coming Parliamential elections the Serbian politicians won't be able to make such populist declarations as joining the EU with K & M as a part of Serbia.

This time they will have to be more realistic towards the main choice the Serbs have to make i.e. either EU integration or Kosovo. And it's going to be the most difficult choice the Serbians have to make. For to be realistic what they say now practically means NEITHER THE EU NOR KOSOVO !

I am not here to give you advices but you cannot be so careless as to try to whistle and drink water at the same time. Moreover being present inside the Serbian ruling coalition the West hopes to impose you ther approaches to the problem after the situation is calmed down.

Maybe you have to delay the solution of two questions and take the advantage of the open Russian door instead of knoking on at the closed European one. Times they are changing as B.Dylon used to sing ! So the EU may not be interested to depend on an outside transiter of their natural gas. Also there's a good chance that one of these years the Yankees won't be able to keep such big abroad forces ...

And he is absolutely right. It is a solution of all problems and I don't know why the West is not accepting this. With Serbia (or better as a province of Serbia) it will take for Kosovo less time. You are absolutely right about Kostunica. In many ways he is worst than Milosevic. He will cause a lot of harm to his people. The longer he stays the more harm he is going to inflict. Will he stay for years? Everything is possible. At the end of his era Serbia will be a desperate poor basket case.

The title of this piece should be "EU membership only without Kostunica".

That Kosovo will not have anything to do with Belgrade is 100% clear. We have been saying this for years, it is the will of the people of Kosovo. As simple as that.

Nothing short of genocide will change the above basic fact. Europeans and Americans have understood that. The smarter Serbs understand that as well. Clearly, Kostunica isn't one of them.

For its own sake, Serbia should not follow him. On second thought, may be it should.

Some Albanian posters here seem to be confusing Serbia's territorial integrity with their desires to be self governing. Both Serbs and Albanians have a mutual desire to separate. The way to achieve this is through autonomy it does not require greed, ethnic cleasing, genocide or the THEFT of territory from another soveriegn state. The attitude of many Albanians here gives the impression that they will not make good citizens of the EU any more than when they were citizens of Serbia.

I think that its high time for that Kostunica to leave the Government . He is only giving it a bad name by what that person is saying . Almost every day he says the same thing no EU for Serbia withou Kosovo. Its time to tell that person that Kosovo is recognized by at least 20 countries and that Kosovo was lost in 1999. what has happened now is only formalization of that process.
He seems to be worst than Milosevic harder in his public appearances and announcements.

Does he really think that EU will allow Kosovo into EU? It's hard to imagine they will allow a state with so much Drug Trafficing, Human Trafficing and 50% unemployment into EU? I say we should be happy that they will stop carring Serbian Passports to do all these bad things in our name and move on. I say Let them be independent and let NATO rule over them from now on.

Yes Kosovo has already been lost in 1999. But the E.U. was wrong to think that 10 years on Serbia would be willing to let it go without a problem. In fact after a 10 year strugle to get closer to the E.U. with many reforms, Kosovo's independence is more dificult to acccept then had it been taken away right after the Kosovo war when Milosovic was still in power.

As much as Kostunica is a block on the road towards Serbia's future, not only the E.U., he will become more populair. People will say, after have choosen a pro European president, so called democratic parties for the past 10 years, after all this years of sucking up, we get rewarded by having Kosovo taken away from us, we might have well voted for the radicals, it wouldn't have make any difference.

Yet when people think we can depend only on Russia and some countries that hasn't recgonised Kosovo's independence, they are mistaken. Serbia can't afford to let go of the E.U. and to cut of ties with the U.S. and many european countries. It's not in the interest of the Serbian people who afterall deserve a better life. They will not be getting a better life if we cutt off all ties and isolate themselves.

After everything they done to us it is clear that we can't expect anything good from them. They want to destroy us, keep us as small, week and poor as possible. We need to look elsewhere and cooperate with friendly countries. Russia is booming, there are a lot of opportunities for our economy. Our companies could work on building projects for infra structure , housing, roads…We need Russian help in strengthening our defense capabilities, especially air-defense. We should continue trade with EU when profitable, no need to be EU member for that. There is nothing that EU produces which we can't by in Asia, usually cheaper for same quality. World is changing fast, we need to develop relations with emerging giants on other continents, China, India, Brazil, Venezuela… Refresh old ties from Non - Aligned Countries Movement. No isolation, on the contrary, think global!
