...and this is how Serbia treats minorities and expects to join EU?

Because parts of a country's infrastructure is sometimes located in an area inhabited by ethnic minorities. Can you imagine relations between countries when parts of their infrastructure are lost to other countries simply because the minorities refuse to live peacefully together?

Realist

Instead of fighting why not this....

Kosova is partitioned along ethnic lines. The Albanian part together with Presheva, Sotuhern Montenegro and West Macedonia unite with Albania. North Kosova unites with Serbia together with Republika Srbska from Bosnia. The remaining Croatian population in Bosnia unite with Bosnia. Wow...peace. Albanians with Albanians. Serbs with Serbs. Croatians with Croatians. Bosnians with Bosnians. Macedonians with Macedonians. Now we can move on with building our own houses.

Richard Z; according to you Albanians living in todays' Montenegro, Macedonia,Presheva and Chameria should learn to live in those states and not make trouble. This statement from you tells me that you have us confused with the Greater Serbia ethnic cleansing campaign. We have a legitamit right to demand equal rights and treatment. Sure, we're against institutionalized discrimination, does that make us bad people? Does our thirst for freedom endanger your dominance?Kosovars have always demonstrated for EQUAL rights and to enjoy the status of official Republic state in Yugoslavia. Serbs refusal caused the destruction of the federation.

Please cease with this false propaganda, they are just lies, baseless lies. Mark have you ever been to Belgrade or indeed Serbia itself. There are nearly 100,000 Albanians living and working in Belgrade and its environs. You've got the Sandzhak, Vojvodina, south east which are all multi-ethnic areas not to mention Belgrade itself. Serbia is known as a 'mini Yugoslavia' where dozens of ethnic groups share the 1 country.

What is it with the irredentist urges and demands of the Albanians of Kosmet that theaten further stability and ethnic harmony in the region. Do you even give a damn for your neighbours?

Peter Sudyka

asalama and azir

Nobody is going to support the forming of an ethnic Albania, not even the United States. It seems only the Albanians are so keen on this Greater Albania project, one never hears it from Hungarians, Germans, Poles, French and other people living in their lands under other ownership, why should you be exempt from territorial integrity of countries in Europe (to preserve stability). Are you guys special, or what? Why do you deserve anything that others worldwide can't get? Just get over yourselves!

Do you then support the split of Republika Srpska and Northern Kosovo to Serbia, since they too do not want to live under foreign rule?

You guys make no sense. You claim Kosovo is a unique case, but then you think the same should apply to all Albanian territories in the Balkans?

And Azir, the behavior of the Serbs toward the embassies is unacceptable, I do not endorse it at all, but we are talking about Albanians here. Do you justify the terrorist actions of ANA, UCK and KLA in striving for the Greater Albania or do you only see Serbian actions as bad?

I did not call the Albanian desire for a Greater Albania terrorist, but I have noticed that some Albanians are prone to it, like in Presevo Valley and Macedonia in 2001, and Kosovo pre-1998. BTW a united Albania in the EU will not exist because not even the EU would support your illegal territorial claims just because you don't like Slavs.

Mark (# 16),

You suggest that we read an article from the Radio Free Europe website. In constrast with B92, Radio Free Europe cannot be considered impartial. Check out their site and click on "About RFE". You will see that Radio Free Europe used to be financed by the CIA (!!!) and is now funded by the US government. So if you want to read some American propaganda, check out the Radio Free Europe article. For more balanced news from the Balkans, stick to B92.

the V-Albanians can "consider" all they want. But the demographics do make them look rather silly to threaten any armed violence. Unlike Kosovo with its more than 1.6 million ethnic Albanians, the Albanians of the Presovo region number a mere 60000 at most. And don't forget Belgrade's forces are firmly in control of that region.

pera

This is precisly why the territorial integrity of Serbia should be respected. The US administration should renounce and withdraw it's recognition to do otherwise is to sow the seeds of bitter struggle for years and centuries to come. The US government have behaved arrogantly, ignorantly and foolishly they have done no one any favours Serb, Albanian or American.

Peter Sudyka

Michael John

Albanians are not the only ones that are living on lands now owned by other countries.

There are Poles living in Belarus, Germans in Poland, Czech Republic and France, Hungarians in Romania, Serbia and Slovakia, Russians in the Ukraine, Latvia, Estonia and Kazakhstan, Armenians in Georgia and Azerbaijan, Turks in Greece, Bulgaria and Kosovo, Serbs in Kosovo and Bosnia and Slovaks in Serbia.

You cannot just redraw borders in Europe to suit minorities. Nationalism has divided and destroyed Europe enough.

Richard Z

pre 16 godina

Michael John when is enough enough? Your comment is very shamefull and a poor excuse that Albanians been using to create a greater Albania. Nothing has been stolen from Albanians, instead they just should learn to live in these states like any other citizen without causing more trouble.

However, while I don't trust the U.S. or the E.U., I am not to sure that this latests event is stired by the west. Albanians had their suport in Kosovo, but only because the west was convinced that it will end there. Clearly they can't suport the Albanians any longer in their claims elsewhere.

Peter Sudyka; you're so guick in labeling Albanians justifiable demands as terrorism. Then what wouldyou call the Serbian government's sponsoring violence on the foreign embassies in Belgrade. It is fairly obvious with the supposed new flag. Six stars at the top. What does it mean?
One star each for Greece, Macedonia, Montenagro, Serbia, Kosovo and Albania. ie the locations of Albanian populations in neighbouring countries. To me the flag is representing the true essence of this issue and that is the formation of a greater Albania.

You guys do indeed have nothing in common with the native people of these countries. All you do is complain, play victim and if you do not get what you want you make trouble and become violent and the stupid west falls for these tricks every time (because they know how to use you, you let them use you, and because they have their own agenda). Your dream for an enlarged Albania will bring only more violence and possible war to The Balkans. Most of Europe and the world is standing by Serbia, the Serbs and their cause and we do not want any Albanian or muslim state in the EU, period. Kosova does not exist and you can be sure that Serbia will take care of things if Presovo Valley Albanians cause trouble.

D92

HAHA Albanians can only try and cause more trouble, Presevo is filled with VS troops. The US has finely fulfilled its long given promise of independence for Kosovo, if you are counting on further support then you are clearly insane, they aren't insane to go through all of that again.

Albanians on B92 and blow as much hot air as they like, no one is listening to you.

Tom O'Donoghue

I hate to have to sound belligerent but if the Albanians in Southern Serbia or in Macedonia or anywhere else start to act up again, then the full resources of whichever state it is must come down on them like a mountain falling from the sky. Enough is enough and even that is far too much.

To Serb supporters:

ZK UK

pre 16 godina

This seems to have the signature of the US on it.

It is more pressure being applied on Serbia to say "Give us Kosovo or we'll take Presovo Valley also".

Of course instability favours these cynics as it divides the people and causes potential conflict. They profit from conflict and they profit from reconstruction. They have fingers in many pies!

Serbia needs to stand firm. The world has already rejected Kosovo's independence!

Peter Sudyka

pre 16 godina

I had a feeling it would not stop with Kosovo. Albanians in Serbia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Greece will all start with referendums to obtain autonomy and eventual reunification with Kosovo or Albania.

Why are they doing this now? Because they saw that the West supported Kosovo's independence, so now why shouldn't they have the right to secede from their respective countries?

Apparently the West claims that Kosovo is the last of the Balkan secessions and that it does not set a precedent.

What now happens if these referendums turn into peaceful protests when no one recognizes them? What happens when they turn to violent protests? What happens when they turn to ethnic violence towards the people who make up the majority in the respective countries? What happens when ethnic violence turns to coordinated terrorist attacks against the country's authorities? What happens when the country's authorities try to pacify the region?

NATO will have no choice but to pacify the regions, drive out the authorities' troops, set up a mission in these regions, who will then refuse at all costs to go back to where they rightfully belong to. I ask the following:

How in the world does the US and EU expect to recognize Kosovo and then tell these other Albanian areas that they are not entitled to their own states that eventually join with Kosovo because the latter is a "sui generis" case?

Surely the West cannot be seen in the eyes of the world as hypocritical, can they? This really is not a joke, the stability in the Balkans is still in jeopardy, despite what some African-American politician may say (I doubt she has the greatest knowledge when it comes to Balkan culture and history). Will they let all Albanian minorities break away to form their ethnic Albania?

The only glimmer of hope is when ANA terrorists tried to break away from Macedonia, inviting NATO in to administer the zone (despite claiming not wanting to secede from Macedonia), or in Presevo Valley in 2001, thankfully NATO had the sense to let the countries' authorities to arrest/disarm/kill the terrorists before they could create another mess like Kosovo, I hope it will be the same with these situations.

Yes I know, these are not terrorists, but it appears to be an Albanian trait that if they don't get what they want, they resort to violence (yes, a minority, but nonetheless).

uli

IT is about time to finish the job of fixing balkan map. It is time to let Valley join Kosova,Mitrovica part join Serbia, and divide Republica Serbska. Serbs should be under one nation, so should be Albanians. Ethnic Albanians and Greater Serbia will stop balkan wars.

Peggy

pre 16 godina

And they keep telling us how Kosovo is a unique case.
What they should be saying is that Albanians as a whole are a unique case and they can have whatever they want.

Naturally, this only applies to the Albanians. Dare any Serbs want to secede and join up with Serbia and they will be met with violence if necessary to stop them.

Let's see what the great US of A says about this now.

Now, Serbian government should invite Europeans and start heavy media campaign about real Albanian aspirations. We must do that before they begin with some mass graves fabrications.

(asalama, 1 March 2008 20:43)"

ALbania is big enough... join them by moving there

Peter Sudyka

I hate to have to sound belligerent but if the Albanians in Southern Serbia or in Macedonia or anywhere else start to act up again, then the full resources of whichever state it is must come down on them like a mountain falling from the sky. Enough is enough and even that is far too much.

Nationalism has divided and destroyed Europe enough.

the V-Albanians can "consider" all they want. But the demographics do make them look rather silly to threaten any armed violence. Unlike Kosovo with its more than 1.6 million ethnic Albanians, the Albanians of the Presovo region number a mere 60000 at most. And don't forget Belgrade's forces are firmly in control of that region.

"i have still to hear any serb show respect for albanians in serbia or kosovo - so how do they expect them to even want to live with serbia. serbs need to respect others and not look to rule over others. - (mark, 2 March 2008 03:28) "

Do you even give a damn for your neighbours?

asalama and azir

Realist

Because parts of a country's infrastructure is sometimes located in an area inhabited by ethnic minorities. Can you imagine relations between countries when parts of their infrastructure are lost to other countries simply because the minorities refuse to live peacefully together?
