Joe, that's gret that you are an American. I can't understand why you would want Croatians to be enslaved by NATO.

BTW I am an Australian and that doesn't disqualify me from having an opinion.

I can understand why Croatia wants to join NATO. However, Croats should realize that the moment they enter NATO, they will be asked to send soldiers to Afghanistan to fight the Taleban. Hope these soldiers will not be used as cannon fodder by NATO Secretary General De Hoop Scheffer.

Typical--a small country being forced into an organization half of the people dont like by the politicians lining their pocket's with UK and US bribe money.

Joe, you know how you don't like it whenever you read one of my comments that seems to speak on behalf of all Americans? You're very quick to remind me that my opinions clearly do not speak on behalf of yours.

With that said, you may want to take a page out of your own playbook and rethink whether you want to preface your next jibe at someone with "As a Serb". This pretty much means you engage in the same type of macrosocial stereotyping you accuse me of.

If you want to criticize Peggy's statement, criticize her as Peggy, not "as a Serb". You come off as intolerant to an entire ethnic race. If you have a genuine prejudice for Serbs as a people, I question your continued presence on a Serbian site. If this is just how you write, again some friendly advice: rethink how you preface your statements.

Joe: How much help did Croatia get from NATO during the Balkan conflict they put a Naval and Arms blockades on it. When their is a conflict with Italy on land ,sea resources and borders hows side have they taken Italy's they will take the same in NATO also. If you cant or wont defend your rights freedoms and defence ,you acquiescent to some military organization it is very dangerous they only look for their advantage. If you are a liability they will drop you so fast but if they can use you they will and I mean USE. Which military alliance in history sooner or later didn't drag its members in to major war down the line and they didn't regretted it. Nothing good came of it but death destruction on unrepresented scale then the wars before. Best place for Croatia is neutrality with a strong defence force to protect it self and not some self serving interests of the so called western powers.

Joe, I cannot imagine where you got the idea that I am unhappy about Croatia joining NATO. On the contrary, I am very happy about that.

You see, I think that smaller countries which have joined NATO have nothing to gain from it but everything to lose.

You will be sending your young men to fight wars which are none of your business and will have nothing given back to you. The only people getting the rewards will be your masters like Germany and the UK.

I don't see who you need protection from but I see that you will be sending your youth to die for someone elses's greedy agenda.

So again, I wish you a speedy entry to NATO. I really do.
Macedonia has a very good reason for wanting to join NATO. They are about to have a huge problem with Albanians and they think that somehow NATO will protect them.

NATO only does what they are ordered to do by a few greedy and corrupt governments and only if it is in their interest.

Macedonia has a real threat and still there will be no guarantee that their country won't be dismemebered to please the Albanians.

I sincerely hope that you will not try to twist my words and carry on again how unhappy I am.

Peggy,

My comment to your statements - very moderate - was apparently censured by B92.
Well it will not stop Croatia to become a member.

Peggy,

I can understand that as a Serb you are not happy to see a fourth neighbour becoming a NATO member. For a small country like Croatia, where 67 percent of the citizens approve the move, the membership is a kind of assurance against an agressive neighbour. NATO provides protection. That is also the reason why the baltic and the Central-European ex-communist countries joined it. Russia caused them a lot of suffering over time.
For the Croatians Serbia was the big bully. Becoming a NATO member Vukovar-type tragedies can not happen again. If I am correct Macedonia is also applying for membership. The underlying reason is always the same : ensure PROTECTION in a dangerous world.

The government has decided that NATO entry does not require a referendum by a few of the elites politicians say so. That is total nonsense of not allowing Croatian citizens to decide in a supposedly a Democratic country the citizens fought fore died and bled. Now a few elites politicians have and will decide for every one their future and their country's radical shift in to a military alliance with out the peoples say so or approval something sure stinks. Only allowing a few elites politicians how are in the Yes camp to decide to join a military alliance instead of the people. Citizens money pay the taxes to support the military and hows sons and daughters will be sent are being sent to far away battle fields. Do not worry the elites politicians sons ,daughters ,relatives and close friends will have a free card not to be in the military or any were near a battle zone they might get killed or be traumatized and hurt. They will be sent to country's how have no clue what is a Croatian or where it is why they are at war or conflict with them. Or what are they doing their in their country and same with the young Croatian soldiere. Why he is doing the biding of the west of Washington ,London Brussels ,Berlin and Rome and the self serving polesies of the west.

I trust that Mr Bush will promise all the Krajina refugees that they can return to their land without fear of persecution or interference from the Croatian authorities, and that they can then follow the Kosovo model and declare their own state.

Peggy

pre 16 godina

Given NATO's history I am at a loss as to why would anyone want to join such an orgaisation now. Why would any country put themselves at NATO's disposal only to be used to fight the wars of some greedy countries and not getting anything back.

Do they really think that they will have a voice and be masters of their own military?

Go for it Croatia. Speedy entry into NATO. I am sure you will regret it soon enough. Couldn't happen to a nicer country.
