I am Basque and a nationalist, live in Serbia and confirm Fernando's words. The percentage of people who would agree that there is no freedom in the Basque Country would be... 10% per cent? No freedom to impose your opinion on the others by force, which is what they would want! The Basque Country is also a wealthy region by Spanish standards so the social pressures are not there. The Basque Country could be independent tomorrow without anybody´s financial support - Catalonia even more so, nothing to do with Kosovo. But how many people would vote for independence - if they had the right to do so? I would not put it beyond 30% - if that meant that the life of a single person would be put at risk, it would not be worth it. I would say that about 50% of the people of the Basque country would describe themselves as Basque and Spanish too, no conflict there, so saying "the Basque people are fighting for a free country, give it to them" is nonsense. And believe me, I am a nationalist and 80% pro independence. Why don´t we talk about the Kurds or the Palestinians instead? What do the Kosovars have to deserve everybody´s help that those poor people haven´t go!!!

its not just the French Basque region ...... there's the Corsican freedom fighters .... then there's also Caledonia in the Pacific where the French used force to quell secession in the 1970s .... interesting times ahead for Paris.

since the US, at first hand, only have profit of creating trouble in south-eastern europe, nobody can say that their policy is really stupid, it´s more some kind of cynisism by the "one and only global superpower"...

but France´s little man "Sarko" on the other hand...has made the most stupid mistake he could make at all, and that will haunt the french diplomacy for a long time...

I only say "unique case" ...ha ha ha...

nevertheless, Sarko, don´t worry, Serbia will prevail, so you don´t have to fear a precedent.

I wonder if the Serbs and the Russians will recognize the Basques when the appropriate time comes? Who knows what the situation will be 10 years down the road. Only thing thats for certain now is that EU will be much more reliant on Russia and (Serbia) for energy. CCCC

I'm from Spain and half of my family is from the basque country (Pais Vasco), but I also have many friends from different parts of the Balkans (Serbia and Bosnia mostly), and the only one thing that I can tell you for sure that Kosovo and The Basque Country have in common is plenty of political oportunism.
The Basque Country does not have 95% of its population wanting independence. If you don't belive me just go ahead and research by yourself the last regional elections there.
A ver si nos informamos un poco antes de abrir la boca sobre asuntos de los cuales no se tiene ni idea.

Be a man Mr. Sarkozy, now that you recognized Kosovo you should give the Basques part of France (let's say: from Bordeaux to the Spanish border). If the K-Albanians are allowed to run their own country so are the Basques. Vive les Pays Basque, monsieur Sarkozy!
