Bosnia will sign the SAA in april. This means that Serbia will be the only country in the region that has not signed the SAA. Serbia should WAKE UP and concentrate on EU integration. Otherwise, Serbia will remain outside the EU while its neighbours will become EU member states.

The reality however is quite different. If the US and EU get their way, then Belgrade will never again control anything in Kosovo. The remaining Serbs will disappear and Serbia’s cultural heritage will be morphed into Albania’s cultural heritage.

The idea that Serbia's choice is either Euro-Atlantic integration or isolation is nonsense.

Serbia has powerful friends who are supporting its territorial integrity. Russia, China, and India are all supporting Serbia. They have rapidly developing economies and half of the world's population lives in just those three countries.

The USA and the EU are the present economic powerhouse, but Russia, China and India are going to be the future.

The United States and the EU are not in good financial shape at all. They have massive debt. In the UK personal debt recently exceeded GDP, and the same thing will happen to the United States within the next ten years.

The American economy couldn't survive without the money they borrow from China. The EU is totally dependant on Russia for its energy needs.

Serbia doesn't need the West. Serbia can develop its economy with nations in the East that want to be friendly. It is up to the West whether they want to be friendly or not.

The people in the US and the EU live an extravagant lifestyle, but they can't afford it. You may envy the life style, but I doubt you would envy the bank statement of most of the people who live it. The average Westerner is struggling to make ends meet.

Eventually their debt will catch up with them and they'll find themselves in pretty tough shape.

Dragan I like this idea, however if you diminish the size of the prospective market, you also diminish the price of your goods.

In privitization, the people should bennifit as much as possible from the sale of state goods, so I have reworked your good Idea:
Instead of taking countries that recognized "E.L.F." (Europe's Little Farce) off of the list, countries who did not recognise E.L.F. should be given right of first refusal.

This might keep some of the wealthier EU Nations from recognising ELF while privitization continues.

I am still waiting to see my own country's (Ireland) position on Kosovo. We are meant to be a neutral country with regard to any conflicts and this is guaranteed in our constitution, so I hope that we do not follow the path of the UK and recognise Kosovo. At the moment, it would make me ashamed to be Irish.

However, if the majority of nations do recognise an independent Kosovo, then no matter whether it was founded legally, it will become legal as they have effective control of the region also.

I am not pro Kosovo independence legally, but I do not think it should hurt Serbia's potentially rapid assent into the EU, nor hopefully result in any reprisals against the innocent citizens, Albanian and Serbian, in Kosovo.

If anyone wants to give me any information or their opinion, please email me at adamflynn1@hotmail.com. I am no expert and would like to hear from more people who live in Serbia/Kosovo/Albania. As a law student, I value your opinions. Thanks

Olf,

You quote me (#11)for some purpose, but I'm afraid I haven't a clue what point you're making in your last paragraph.

My point to all in the Serbian government is simple: either call an election with no guarantee that things will be any different afterwards, or work TOGETHER.

Of course, another option would be for DSS and NS to pull out of government and coalesce with the Radical Party. But is that what Kostunica wants?

By the way Olf, when are the K-Albanians going to extradite their many war criminals to the Hague?

It seems that Serbian politicians are starting to prepare the ground for the next elections and possible coalitions. Headline of this article is not fair for Serb public since it is making them keep the current government. Why? Because the recent rally must have scared them of further violence so the changes are postponed for latter, spring elections.
Many of you in here say that Serbia with never recognise Independent Kosova. My view is that you never say never however one thing is for sure, Serbia will not recognize Kosova in the very near future even if Russia changes it’s mind. Serbia can be both a friend of the EU and a friend of Russia if it wants to be. It does not need to become a member of the EU either, many countries aren't (Iceland, Norway, Switzerland etc.). I think what Serbia needs to do now is focus on good relations with as many countries as possible, an unalligned approach as was under Tito always seemed to work in their best interest. I can't see how Serbia will want EU integration if so many of its states have or will recognize independence of Kosovo despite the wishes of Serbia. How do they expect Serbia to trust them now?

Benny

It looks like some positive signs are starting to come out of Serbia finally. This and the article about "Serbia cannot be held hostage" seem to be a realization that isolating the country would only make the lives of the Serbian people so much the worse.

Kostunica needs to be isolated and removed from power, and I believe that like they did to Milosevic the Serbian people will finally remove Kostunica and be rid of the Milosevic politics once and for all.

Mrs Dulic, Serbia has no friends in Europe and stop spreading the lies amongst the people in Serbia. I wish if you could name at least only one Serbia’s friend within the EU.

Ivana Dulic should be aware that there are no friends but interests. We saw already what the interests of our European friends were. Perhaps raping our country is really friendly act and perhaps Ivana see it that way. Finally, why would she care for Serbia’s sovereignty since she is Serbia’s Croat and she has no feelings for the country she lives in and very likely that Serbian heritage in Kosovo means nothing to her, neither I expect her to have any feelings for anything Serbian.

Mrs Ivana, I hope this government falls and then you all will finally see where you all belong in Serbia’s political scene and how little support you actually have. There is no Serb that will just swallow this inflicted injustice towards Serbia by the EU and USA. You should be all aware, and I hope Albanians will too, that Serbia won’t just turn the page and forget about Kosovo. Serbia’s top priority was and will stay Kosovo and Metohija and there is nothing that anyone can do about it. Serbia won’t settle calm before fully reinstate Kosovo and Metohija within Serbia’s sovereignty. We survived many rapists in the past, we will survive this one too and eventually win, sooner or later.

I can’t believe that there are still politicians in Serbia that fall for the EU carrots! ! !

Tom O'Donoghue

pre 16 godina

It may be that what Serbia needs now is a general election. But there is no guarantee that it would change the balance of forces and the last thing the country needs is a prolonged period of haggling over the formation of a new government. Do any of the posters in Belgrade have any insight into the likely outcome of an election?

One thing for sure - the megaphone diplomacy has to stop. Every time Tadic makes a speech it includes a swipe at Kostunica and vice versa.
If they're not doing it themselves their allies in government are doing it. It is time for everyone to either "put up or shut up".

If they "put up", then have an election and see where the cards fall. A risky business. It would be far preferable if they all "shut up" and devised a common strategic approach towards Kosovo, the EU, etc.

Whether they like it or not, they're in this together.

In Britain the Scottish National Party wants independence from the United Kingdom. They know that Scotland is evenly divided over the issue so they spin the story that once they are “independent” Scotland would be “reunited” with England and Wales in the EU family.

The reality is that once independent Scotland will be governed by their Parliament is Edinburgh and by bureaucrats in Brussels. The Westminster Parliament will have no say in the future of Scotland.

Tadic and his G17 collaborators are working towards a similar position over Kosovo. Once both Kosovo and Serbia enter the EU they will be “reunited” in the European family of nations.

The reality however is quite different. If the US and EU get their way, then Belgrade will never again control anything in Kosovo. The remaining Serbs will disappear and Serbia’s cultural heritage will be morphed into Albania’s cultural heritage.

Seems like G17 are stuck in a time-loop - didn't they withdraw support because of the same stance and where has that lead them?

Does the G17 minister not comprehend that the priority over Serbia's Sovereign integrity was forced upon Serbia by itself but from those the G17 still consider as 'friends' despite the actions against Serbia?

If you have no state then what exactly will be joining the EU?

Few Kosovar Albanians understand this. The eight years in which Kosovo was a UN protectorate may well be followed by a period as an EU protectorate” (Economist, February 21). The Albanians have been duped, drawn right into the open maw of the EU. The Serbs, despite Russian protests, must ultimately follow, or themselves come under the gun of the developing EU military machine which would simply enforce their status as either an EU state or protectorate - G17 (if they support their Ministers comments) look like they blindly accept such submission!

Tadic was chosen by a slim majority. Not enough to give him the moral authority to force EU integration. If he dosen't start coordinating with with the opposition, street protests will start going against him.

In some comments people here offer a false choice EITHER SERBIA JOINS RUSSIA OR THE EU. I know it for sure Russia is strongly motivated to see Serbiaas a EU member. Russia gains much having such a friendly nation inside the EU and that's why we have supported Tadic at the Presidentials.

As for me I would personally support Nicolic because real chances for the membership are too small for the time being. Right now the Serbs meet a difficult choice between their heart and their pocket ... But backed by Russia they for the first time in their late history received a place for the manuever.

The Serbs have no right for a mistake this time and their main solutions should be made in a less emotional atmosphere. Despite the betrayal of some 18 governments this time we have good chances for the revenge. So there's no place for panic.

This is the best option so far. It says, give up everything, enter another era of isolation and fight for the lost cause Kosova, forever, while he lives with all the benefits that EU and EU integration brings. How wise.

So there's no place for panic.

cmon guys give the little guy a break, he has to say this. he has no choice in the matter. the pressure's piling, and when you look at tadic's face you can clearly see it. he looks sleep deprived to say the least.

to the sharp russian cat here ;) this is no longer a process that can be controlled. in 3, 4, 5 years' time a government will be able to work more pragmatically. and that will depend on what the situation with kosovo will be at that time.
in any near future, serbians will simply not elect someone who mentions eu. people are sick at the word, not of course the deluded salon europhiles, i'm talking regular, uncool masses :)
i said this precise thing before elections when i supported tadic, that russkies want him elected to gain a foot in the eu.
but that was before. and besides, its not a question of do we want, its that we cant. and we don’t want.
we need to continue trade ties, but no political ties whatsoever. and if they'd like to deny us trade ties, i say, let's see that. let's see the stability in the balkans in all its fabled glory :)

Sure, we should deal with Europe, but only the countries in Europe which do not recognize this fake and illegal state.
For future Serbian projects, I only want to see Russian, Spanish, Greek, Slovak, Romanian, Cypriot.... companies on the bidders list. All American, German and British firms should be taken off the list completely, since they are the only really pushing for this illegal and immoral 'greater albania' plan.

Tadic was chosen by a slim majority. Not enough to give him the moral authority to force EU integration. If he dosen't start coordinating with with the opposition, street protests will start going against him.

what a nonsense. as if Spain or Slovakia are not friends of Serbia within the EU...

just another propaganda-spin...

published by B92!

to make it clear:
there is simply no need for this. G17 is a bunch of profiteers who would like to gain more profit... but they are definitely not arguing in the interests of Serbia and it´s poeple.

Thanks

THIS WOULD BE IRONIC BECAUSE IT WOULD LET SERBIA EMPLOY IT'S OWN STICK AND CARROT, WHILE AT THE SAME TIME KEEPING PRICES HIGH!

Even smaller companies are often multi-national and across the globe. What appears to be a Russian company can be an American and it is true the other way.

Bosnia will sign the SAA in april. This means that Serbia will be the only country in the region that has not signed the SAA. Serbia should WAKE UP and concentrate on EU integration. Otherwise, Serbia will remain outside the EU while its neighbours will become EU member states.
