Looking at the comment here I now understand how little not to say at all Serbs know about Albania. The propaganda seem to have done its job at a great success. Well we don't mind you keep living in you disillusion world of everyone being against you and you being better than everybody else while you carry on moving forward. In the end it will be you downfall not ours and at expenses of ordinary serbs which personally have nothing against.

Albania has achieved remarkable progress no matter what the "experts" here think. The democratic achievements, consolidation of the market economy, fighting teh corruption , are one of teh conditions to be member of NATO. Most probably, Albania wil receive the invitation to join NATO this April.

The economic achievements of Albania are quite impressive too. As the minister of foreign affairs of Italy D'Alema said: once we considered Albania as source of destabilization now we consider it as an opportunity.

ENEL the Italian power behemoth this December signed in Albania a contract for building of coal fired power plant worth 1,5 billion euro(guess where teh coal will come from) - that would be the total amount of teh foreign investments flood in Serbia since 1990.

P.S. the nuclear power plant project was initiated by a join Italian/American consortium in nuclear energy field, who already has their production plants in Durres. Perhaps as an answer to teh Russian investments in nuclear plant in Bulgaria??? see we are in teh west not only geographically...

Can you provide a link with regards to this power plant being completed as early as next year? I find that impossible to believe, given how weak Albania's economy is.

About the Durres-Pristina highway, why does everyone make such a big deal out of it? All European countries have highways, even Moldova.

Oh wow really vast oil reserves in Albania? I guess you guys better get that giant straw to suck the oil out and put into barrels. wait...dosent albania need vast infastructure and equipment to drill, process, package, and export the oil? Drilling for oil costs money, and lots of it. Its been like a The cold truth is with the level of organised crime and corruption in Albania, no company would think about investing billions to drill for the oil. The EU suspended talks with Serbia because of an attack on embassys, you think anyones gonna invest billions in a curroption filled enviornment? The new "vast reserve" probably contains a total of 2.98 billion barrels of oil according to this article:

http://www.newkosovareport.com/20080110426/Region/Vast-oil-reserves-found-in-northern-Albania.html

2.98 billion barrels of oil, sounds like a lot right? The US consumes 20 million barrels per day,
http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0922041.html

thats enough oil for about 150 days, then what? You sure the US is gonna invest billions to get enough oil for half a year? By the time any drilling stations are built and all the research is done, 2.98 billion barrels would be enough for maybe 2 or 3 months. Besides oil is the past. Sweden is planning on being free of any oil consumption by 2020. Other countries are sure to join. Russia, Saudi Arabia, UAE, are smart enough to know oil will run out in the next few decades. They are making theyr money now when oil prices are high. Oil is the past. biofuel, solar, and wind is the future. Albanias "vast" oil reserve is a lot for itself, but the US wont risk billions in a country with high corruption and organised crime rates just so they can get a few months supply of Oil. You guys should really stop turning things into a ALbania vs Serbia arguement. What else are you gonna suggest? try to sell oil to serbia and act smug? or say Albania is not going to sell serbia any oil? As i said Oil is the past. Instead of wasting time and money trying to get the oil, Albania should get a head start on alternative energys.

Nemanja, Jack, Vuk nd Mike:

If Kosova, in your opinion, is such a basket case then why do the Serbs want it so badly? Presumably the same reason the Albanians do.

The big difference is that the Albanians own it and the Serbs do not. Under Serb leadership for almost one hundred years the Serbs were incapable of doing anything worthwhile with Kosova. You might want to watch and learn something from the Albanians as they turn Kosova into a modern vibrant and democratic country.

BTW, With recognition from the US, GB, Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Norway and other major countries who control 75% of the world's wealth, Kosova doesn't need anymore recognition than it has already. However, you know as well as I do, there will be many more countries about to recognize and contribute to the gravy train. Don't worry though, Albanians are a very generous and hospitable people, therefore, they won't let their less fortunate Serb neighbors go hungry!

Love it Nemanja.

It's always good to diversify your power generating facilities, so a combination of both ideas would be great. Also, it would be fairly cheap to initialise your idea because Kosovo now looks like one large landfill site so you wouldn't even need to buy plastic bags you could just go round and collect them from the trees, bushes, rivers, lakes, verges, valleys, gorges and mountainsides.

Why doesn't PISG buy (with a loan from my euro tax money, how else) 50,000 exercise bikes fitted with dynamos. They could hook these all together and then employ ethnic Albanians from Kosmet to peddle them. This would solve two problems at once:
1. Provide much needed power
2. Provide employment for 150,000 (3 eight hour shifts) ethnic albanians.

Genius, I know.

PS It would also set an example to the rest of the world on how to generate eco friendly power from a renewable source. :)

Albania is like Russia in the early 90s. Corruption is rampant. Once Albania gets rid of corruption, then is only when they can start growing and hope to attract investors. I dont think Albania is in a position to make any foreign investments. No company would invest in Kosovo now, they would be crazy. The world is split on its independence, and it is unlikly to be allowed into the UN or any other major Eurpean or world institutions. The very fact that many countries dont recognize Kosovo is what will make its independence a failure. Instead of taking a anti albanian or anti serb view, try thinking about it as an economist. Dozens of countries from all continents oppose Kosovos independence. Russia, which has 30% of the worlds oil reserves is strictly opposed to it. Not to mention the fact that wherever the US gets involved turns into a firey war zone. Vietnam, Iraq(90s), Afghanistan, Iraq(2000s).

Kosova is expected to have the power plant finished by no later than 2011 and as early as 2009..Albania just wants a share of it, nothing major. With the coal we have and the new power plant we will be exporting energy and Albania wishes to receive a share of that electricity, maybe at a cheaper rate?

What i am getting from this is that Albanian government wants to help in Kosovo. Last i heard is that they had no interest in Kosovo. I guess there was an underlying agenda. (Greater Albania?) As far as I'm concerned, Albania needs to take care of it's own country and people, first, and then think about helping another country and their citizens.

Albania is one of the poorest and most corrupt countries in Europe, it has power shortages and lack of funding itself. How can they expect to invest in Kosovo? It's like Sudan investing in Chad, or Kyrgyzstan investing in Tajikistan.

This nuclear power plant in Albania will also probably never be built because the cost of the average power plant that is nuclear fired is about three billion euros, that is half of Albania's GDP. Perhaps these Albanian states shoul be aiming a little lower with their goals. It will take about 20-30 years before these two countries have the infrastructure to export power to outside countries (getting minerals out from under the earth, building the power plants etc.).

I wish them the best of luck!

The solution to tension between Kosovo Albanians and Serbs:

http://www.balkaninsight.com/en/main/life_and_style/8160/

All we need to do is get the 9 million Serbs, 2 million Kosovo Albanians, 4 million native Albanians, a few hundred litres of brandy, and 1 wolf.
then
Peace in the balkans

KS

Can you provide a link with regards to this power plant being completed as early as next year? I find that impossible to believe, given how weak Albania's economy is.

About the Durres-Pristina highway, why does everyone make such a big deal out of it? All European countries have highways, even Moldova.
