The Albanian move on Feb. 17 was no doubt a move planed well in advance. They try to sail between Scylla (presidential elections in Serbia) and Charybdis (presidential elections in Russia).

If there was any doubt about the Russian elections outcome, this is over. Albanians made Putin confident: his hand-picked "Bear" will win. The Russian media close to Putin made sure, there is a broad Kosovo coverage to ensure the widest population support. Ergo: the election is over before it begun.

After Scylla and Charybdis time to look at bears. What and who up to we simply do not know, hope for the peaceful solution. I expect the Kosovo issue to elevate itself after the elections on coming Sunday.

Kosovo precedent gets HUGE attention in the Russian media. Russia will be building a major gas pipeline through Serbia and have its economic interests connected with Serbia. Russia may not fight militarily for Kosovo, but it will not allow another bombing of Serbia like one in 1999, and this time it has the necessary 'tools' (all it takes is deployment of a sub, a missile cruiser, and a carrier -- and such battlegroup, by coincidence, has just visited that region first time in 15 years). A lot seems to depend on the Serbs themselves in this situation... I think Kosovo independence is a dangerous and stupid idea, and I hope that things would return back under international law before it is too late.

This has been a coordinated strategy from the start. The Serbs/Russians are not showing their hand, they are making it more difficult to read.

And I guess this would make the rest of us total dufuses for not figuring it out?

Pls, mate: The Albanian Front for National Unification has already published Serbia's Action Plan. Everyone knows what Serbia is up to!

Zoran,

"No use of force," yes I agree with this, what good would it be anyway? "The force is with us," says Yoda, to skywalker. Well I can't make anything of this Russian/U.S war of words anymore. International law has no more meaning, but has it ever? In the U.S. we will soon have a choice of two to pick. One Obama "a nobody" in politics, and a "Hot Head" who dumps his sick wife for a much younger blond.A man who say's to the American people, "don't trust those damn commies, and the hell with the rest of the world!! nuke them all and let God sort them out.

Serbs should be grateful for Russia's support. However, to expect Russia to go to war over Kosovo is a bit unrealistic. After all, wasn't it the Serbian gvnmnt who kept saying "we will not use force if Kosovo declares independence ..." ? paraphrase, of course. But, one never knows what will happen if the NATO/EU agressors use force againts Kosovo Serbs' legitimate show of dipleasure. Both Serbia and Russia may come in to support them, with force. Let's see if the Yanks will do something like that.

Did you already forget the ridicolous support from Russia for Serbia in 1999? The whole world was laughing about that. Today the political questions are more or less the same, but still unsolved. But Lavrov's diplomacy in the so called "Troika" was very successful! For two years Russia blocked all diplomatic solutions - and in this perios Russia pushed the "Southstream" project forward in it's own favour. Now the Russian delegation just came to get the rest of signatures. That's all. As they dropped Serbia like a hot potatoe already once, they are going to do this again, when the nationalistic fools job is done in Serbia.

Ba,Bla,Bla,

The borders between Kosovo and Serbia are closed and controled by N.A.T.O. Mr.Lavrov already. More talk from the russians while they buy time to buy up more of the Serbian assets, at the end Serbia will lose all of kosovo to the West. At the end the Serbs will realize that the West is best!

When Tadic first said "no use of force" I was furious! How can you show your hand like that, I called it a "defeatist" statement and inferred that this was done at the behest of his Western masters. Then the SRS came out and said basically the same thing and I started to ponder the deeper strategy. Now the Russians are saying the same thing and it finally hit me (better late then never). This has been a coordinated strategy from the start. The Serbs/Russians are not showing their hand, they are making it more difficult to read. I am "officially" jumping on this bandwagon and changing my position. I also say "no use of force", this is my "official" stance!

If the US and Russia went to war, somehow I don't think there will be any winners.

However, Serbia doesn't need Russia to defeat NATO or the US. Judging by the situation in Iraq and Afghanistan, we just need to send those unruly hooligans from Belgrade into Kosovo and the US forces are history! ;)

"Rogozin said 'in order to be respected, Russia could use force'. This was directed to ex-USSR provinces not Kosovo.
(BH_NYC, 25 February 2008 12:44) "

Seems to me he was specifically talking about NATO's tendency to overstep it's mandate in Kosovo.

Ahmet Isufi:

Yep, lots of drugs in Kosovo..

What the Russian NATO envoy says to a local 'rag', & what he says to NATO in his official capacity are two very different things. If you think he overstepped his authority in the latter case, then you really are smoking that stuff - he was there to send a very clear message to NATO at the behest of the Russian government, which it seems was received, as regardless of what NATO flunkies say to the media, actions speak louder - EULEX withdrew from the north.

Ahmet Isufi, Shukri Gashi, & lets not forget azir who seems to approve of german actions in WWII:

I don't seriously expect that there'll be a major-military confrontation over Kosovo between the major powers as no-one sensible wants that, but as for the military capabilies of the various factions in Kosovo, it's worthwhile to reflect on a few things given your comments.

The US is stretched thin in Iraq - they're in no position to send substantial numbers of troops anywhere.

Same story for NATO, only for them it's Afghanistan - if they're talking about pulling 2nd line units out of Bosnia, then they really are grasping.

That leaves the Russians.. last I heard, they weren't up to anything.

Oops, nearly forget the K-albanian army, they're.. well they are..

So , Rogozin is eating his own words. Don't ever say something if you cannot back it up with action.
Of course Russia is not stupid to use force, they know it better and he only tested US resolve , which in return he was told where US stand regarding Kosova.

Russia's threats and intimidation has it's limits. When it really matters,Russia does not stand a chance to win over the US and NATO forces in a war over Kosova for Serbia. So all the Serbs and Russia can do is make some noise and not co-operate.Other than that, the inevitable and irreversable position of the international community decision to recognize Kosova's independance and the free will of the people to lve in peace and harmony will be upheld.Too bad ,get over it.PS Take Tadic's advice and no more senseless wars.
