Another Canadian Serb -
"I just wanted to let all the European posters know what the North Americans view of the new State of Montenegro.
Montenegrins are not Serbians and that they could not live and tolerate each other resulting in ethnic hatred and the break up of yet another state of Serbia.
Is this true?
and if so
Why are the Serbian peoples paying the price for the ruthless policies of
Slobodan Milosevic & Radovan Karadzic both of Montenegrin Ethnicity?
(Another Canadian Serb, 24 February 2008 14:42)"

I wonder what will we learn in the future abot current political elite in Serbia (Kostunica, Samardzic etc).
The question is: Who is acyually leading Serbia in a DITCH...???

Some people seem to forget that Montenegro was an independent country prior to joining the Yugoslav federation. The parallels between the independence aspirations of essentially illegal aliens of Kosovo and the Montenegrins are unfounded. The Montenegrin identity is somewhat tricky to establish but it is essentially a Slavic one and not an Albanian one. I hope The Govt. in Montenegro allows dual citizenship with Serbia on their new constitution and has the strength to stand up to Albanian extremism. Not to cower down like the Macedonians!!!!

Let me clear something up. Montenegro and Serbia were two republics in the former Yugoslavia.

They formed a union called "Serbia and Montenegro". Montenegro decided to leave that union and not Serbia.

It was never part of Serbia so did not leave Serbia. Kosovo, on the other hand, is a province of Serbia and under international law does not have the same right as Montenegro.

My beloved Njegos must be turning over in his grave at the prospect that Montenegro might recognize Kosovo’s UDI!

Canadian, its “politically correct” to try to drive a wedge between the Montenegrin and Serbian people these days. Even B92 tries to force us Montenegrins to choose between a strictly Serbian or Montenegrin identity by censoring comments about the close relationship between Serbs and Montenegrins.

Unfortunately that type of political pressure will only result in the destruction of the Montenegrin people as a whole. Literally hundreds of thousands of us are being forced to choose between being Serb or Montenegrin. The result of this political campaign is the drastic reduction of those proclaiming themselves to be Montenegrin.

As a Montenegrin, I am proud of Njegos, of the Mountain Wreath, of Kosovo and our shared Orthodoxy with our Serbian brothers. I am proud of our history and all that we have done to help our Serbian brothers overcome the Turkish yoke and keep alive the hopes and dreams of a Kosovo under Serbian protection.

As a Montenegrin, I am extremely disappointed in B92’s policies in trying to destroy Montenegro’s traditions and beliefs and forcing us to either completely assimilate into the Serbian identity or reject it in its entirety. Clearly the majority is leaning towards close ties with Serbia, and the result is the rapidly diminishing Montenegrin ethnicity. Even B92’s moderator tried to tell me that I HAD to be Serbian if I choose to believe in the relationship between the two. I was even told I was being “racist” towards myself, if you can believe that!

Absolutely SHAMEFUL B92 for helping to destroy the Montenegrin people.

Oddly enough, B92 has never censored me for discussing the possibly ethnic connection between the Albanians and the Montenegrins. Clearly Montenegrins are related to the Albanians as well, we do after all share the same clans and culture. So discussing the origins and identity of the Montenegrin people is fine, as long as you don’t talk about Serbs, if you do, you are a racist.

That being said, Montenegro is the perfect country to help negotiate this mess. We understand the Serb’s love for Kosovo, but on the other hand, we understand the Albanian desire for freedom and independence.

As always, I support a mutually agreed upon partition based on negotiation and compromise. Its going to be partition anyways, why not make it peaceful and a positive precedent for solving the world’s problems?

B92 did not have a single positive editorial towards the discussion of a peaceful partition and you guys are supposed to be the voice of reason in the area.

Montenegro more than many other countries know well what it means to be FREED from Serbia. Kosova understand the the real Montenegrins favor Kosova's independence and are fully aware of Serbs in that republic ready to cause trouble. I feel that as soon of more than half of EU countries recognise Kosova indpendence then the chain of recognition will follow very fast.

The split with Serbia was done for political and economic reasons, not because Slavs in Montenegro did not like Slavs in Serbia. We certainly, as a nation, wholeheartedly support the serbians in Serbia. Enough with this Albanian expansionism.
