As a UK citizen I am truly ashamed of the haste with which our Government recognised the territory known as Kosovo. The declaration was illegal and imoral and will only further de-stabilise the Western Balkans. Serbia fought with distinction on behalf of the Allies, in marked contrast to some of her neighbours, and is repaid by having some 15% of her territory stolen.
Some will say this is pay-back for the Milosevic era but he was overthrown by the people. Some will say its because indited war criminals are still at large but I don't recall Germany being bullied into finding Martin Bormann.
History is re-written by the winners and Serbia had apalling PR during the Milosevic era. Trashing Macdonalds and the American Embassy will do nothing to change that image. Diplomacy and economics are the weapons to use against the Albanians - close the border, cut-off the electricity and have no trade with them. Make sure Russia stands firm at the UN and uses its veto to stop Kosovo becoming a member. Keep telling anyone who will listen that this annexation is illegal and remind them of Serbia's anti facist history. The wheel will turn and one day the cultural and spiritual heart of the nation will be returned.

Just a few words from Poland - 80 to 90% of polish ppl support Serbia, just check our internet sites or go and see how many of us are signing "keep Serbia united" petition. Unfortunately our government which almost always behaves like pets of usa has not considered this independency proclamation illegal. I hope they will not act against the will of polish nation by supporting this farse.

(Bartosz, 19 February 2008 19:39)

The countries of Poland, Czech Republic, Austria and Slovakia and its people were witness to Hilter and his Nazi henchman considered this independency proclamation illegal.

Countries such as Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Austria were the witnesses of the initial breach of law in the late 1930's where international law was trampled along with the Treaty of Versailles and the League of Nations founded by US President Woodrow Wilson.

Czechoslovakia was sold in a silver platter by England and France and Prime Minister Benes could only watch in horror as the Nazi's marched into Prague. The current Czech republic and government should be held in contempt of the citizens of Czech republic to allow Kosovo to be trampled in the same way. Slovakia and it's people have risen to the challenge and rejected the illegal recognition of an Albanian state led by Hacim Thaci.

Nazi Germany marched on Austria and Poland the same way with the false German propoganda machine accusing the Polish, Austrian and Czechoslovakian governments of descrimination of the German Minority.

Finally, Russia and Serbia per capital sacrificed the greatest number of soldiers in both WWI and WWII to free Europe. It's high time to let Europe free itself of its new Pax Romana Empire led by Germany and followed blindly by England and France.

Surprising really that Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have recognised 'Kosova's' right of self determination, I wonder will they be so accomodating when ethnic Russians in those 3 Baltic republics begin demanding their own right of self determination.

This is akin to the Jim Jones cult members who commited mass suicide but in this case potentially on a larger scale, or are the 3 constituent governments so pre-occupied in pleasing their American imperialist masters' every whims that they cant see what they have actually done and of the fatal consequences of their actions.

Actually it is day 3 (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday) and the wikipedia page still lists only 8. The OIC as a whole has endorsed the declaration, but the recognition of Kosovo is left up to each member state.

Some of the 17 countries you listed are also in the OIC so you are counting them twice.

Russia is relevant enough to prevent Kosovo joining the UN. Romania has also come out strongly against recognition.

Real independence will only happen when Kosovo actually governs itself without any outside interference. Bosnia-Hercegovina hasn't reached that stage in 12 years.

Dear Alex Gar,
It is not your fault that you do not understand, since you have a wrong informations, guided by Western political and media campaign in last 10 years.
It was the other way around - Kosovo Albanians have been torturing for last 50 years Serbian population in Kosovo, which was a great majority after II world war. Life with Albanians, who were always armed and clinging to criminal activities was impossible and too dangerous for Serbian families which slowly were moving away from Kosovo, and that is why we have so many Albanians there now. Milosevic was only forced to answer to their terrorist attacks, and same would do any other western politician faced with terrorism. Bush has reacted much worse and was at the same time propagating a war against terrorism in a much larger scale. Not to mention all of the killing of Serbians since 1999 while international community and KFOR were pretending to protect non- Albanian population. Not to mention 280 000 of Serbians which fled from Kosovo in 2004 and were forced to leave their homes. Do you think it is fair that these people will stay without their homes and properties and possibility to return and have normal life, while the Albanians who have their independent country of Albania stay in a place which they have practically occupied in a brutal, wild way? "If that was true then there would have been a consensus agreed by the EU yesterday to recognise Kosovo - there wasn't. The number of countries that are recognizing Kosovo is increasing by the minute. You are not up to date yet. Keep watching the news.

Anyway, the reasons why some EU contries oppose Kosovo's independence is not because they support Serbia or think Serbia is right (Greece maybe with its anti-albanian policies) but because they have their own breakaway regions.

Russia is the only relevant and significant supported of Serbia.

Within few weeks Kosovo will get recognised by more than 100 states at least. Wait and see.

You probably didn't believe independence would happen either, but it did happen and it did recognized by the wester world and others.

I wonder what the supreme court was doing during the torture (and sometimes ending life)of thousands of Kosovo Albanians by Serbia authorities, until NATO dropped bombs in Kosovo and Serbia.
Please understand that I am not against Serbia or pro Kosovo, but from my perspective this is the only way of achieving peace and stabilisation in the region. The new Kosovo constitution must of course respect the right of all people in Kosovo including the Serbs and other populations…
