I was about to say exactly what you just wrote. Actually, if I remember correctly, anyone born "abroad" to two Albanian parents is automatically eligible for citizenship or something similar. Also, it isn't just Serbia that has made "plans" on how to deal with Kosovo's independence...

To the rest of the folks here...no one said the Kosovo's path will be easy, but other countries have survived through far worse circumstances...Israel and Japan come to mind first. Next to what these countries went through, Kosovo is a cakewalk.

Many of the Serbian commentators here and their supporters keep claiming that independent Kosovo will be a corrupt, impoverished "colony" and what not. You're not seriously claiming that under Belgrade's rule things would be better for the Kosovars do you? There is a reason Kosovo is in the shape it is now and that was largely due to Belgrade's past policies.

Congratulations to the Kosovars.

I am very much a critic of Saudi Arabia as a rule, but in this situation I applaud them for becoging the first to recognise Kosovo.
It is interesting to nte that the majority of those countries refusing to recocognise this new country are Orthodox religiously. This was very simiar during the 1999 war.
Good Luck Kosova!

Congratulations to Europe and Balkan countries for bringing to the final step of the dissolution of Yugoslavia.
There will be no hegemony in Balkans anymore-no abuse of human rights and freedoms.

The Republic of Kosova is not a precedent for the separation of other troubled regions anywhere in the world.

The Republic of Kosova is precedent only for one thing: FOR GAINING SUPPORT FROM WEST AND EAST, FROM SOUTH AND NORTH...it is born due to a large support of the people of good will - jews, christians, orthodox, muslims and all other world's beliefs.

It is the time to look forward, not behind. The Republic of Kosova will be the BEST example in the world.
The history will be our witness - to all of us.

As an albanian from albania, and i'm sure all my compatriots share my views, we will give every citizen from Kosova Dual citizienship, meaning they will have Kosovo and Albanian Citizenship. They can use our airports, ports, and we will unite in everything but politically. NATO is welcomed to built bases in Kosovo and Albania. Kosovo is Albania, and we have been here since the stone age.

dardan: Maybe YOU don't recognise the REPUBLIC of MACEDONIA, but as at September 2007 118 countries do! Including four of the five permanent members of the UN security Council. Not long now before the 2/3 majority is reached. Time for Greece to wake up.

Now, do you have anything useful to add to this discussion?

You don’t to fight to get who is first and who is second.
PM Thaci sent a letter to 196 countries to formally ask to recognize the new independent state of Kosovo.
It is up to independent countries to make that decision. However one thing is for sure that independence of Kosovo was not unilateral Independence bur coordinated Independence with EU and US.
Now we cannot stop or encourage other countries to recognize in certain order. If is US or France or Saudis, that is not in our hand to decide anymore and will not make us to feel guilty. Request for recognition is out and every country will do it in its own convenience. Serbia will do it some day too, when they will realize that doing so it is the best thing that they can do.

Ohh poor Kosovars! They're so gonna need Brazil, Cuba, and African countries, because they depend on them so much economically, socially... I'm really sorry for their loss. I wonder how they're gonna survive if does not recognize their declaration of independence. Maybe it is because they are busy commiting crimes agains some minority in their country.

And who cares about US, Great Britain, France?

Oh, and I almost forgot about Romania, Cyprus, and Slovakia... Now Kosovars cannot go there for a spring holiday and spend their money there, now they have to go to London, New York, Rome... or even Paris or Dubai.

Finally, what document was that? *A* document that only Beta and B92 possess! Very convincing.

The "second wave" is said to include Croatia and Macedonia.
--

No doubt this is tied to NATO membership. The US have both by the nose with some scare tactics regarding their territory.

The Macedonians believe membership will secure their territory against Albanian claims and Croatia will believe their territory is secure against Serbian claims.

Apart from economic penalties I think they fail to realise that world domination is moving east. To China and India with the backing of Russia with energy and military needs.

The Serbs have chosen the right side (again), it's just a matter of patience. Sure the US will attempt to safe guard it, but failure is certain!

I wonder how is it possible for serbian press to be so unreal and different from the whole wide worldon reporting the event of indipendence of Kosova?! All world'greatest news agencies report how tomorrow all the biggest states of EU, (like GB, France, Italy and Germany) will recognise Kosoovo, which will be followed by other EU counties which will probably recognise Kosova in group. While serbian press keeps its population isolated and uninformed about the truth in Kosova. This proves that the freedom of word in Serbia is still directed by Serbian Goverment just like during Milosevic's reign.

nimn

Macedonia will recognise the illegal UDI claim quite soon. The minority Albanians in the government (foisted on Macedonia by the western powers - don't forget) will see to that. Because of the OFA native Macedonians, who support and believe in this country (Macedonia) - not Albania - have had real power taken away from them.

Albanian politicians (with close links to the mafia) are the real power brokers here. The fact that any support by Macedonia may well end up with Greece and Serbia closing borders, at least some form of trade problem, doesn't matter to these people - they only think of themselves, their family, their political party, and their 'cousins' in Albania and KiM. They have NO thoughts for the country that gives them a living - disgraceful.

Most Albanians in the west of Macedonia do not contribute to taxes, do not pay for electricity, do not register and pay the state the VAT due. Yet they want everything the state can offer.

Another Albanian country in the Balkans is a shame for everyone who believes in justice. Sad days indeed.

EA,

Youre depending on Islamist and American puppet states to prop you up while the rest of the globe gives you a wide berth.

Problems ahead as fewer than a fifth of the nations will recognise the world's newest colony. How are going to get investors in when the K-Serbs hold the real estate (Trepca) and a large swathe of the planet has just declared you persona non grata?

America and a few EU states are hardly going to prop you up by throwing money in a black hole that is 'Kosova'. While Serbia holds the deeds to the land you will remain in effect.... in limbo.

Well I'm not surprised by the Saudis since they have invested millions in the erection of mosques, madrasa and Saudi Wahaabist Immans. Interesting to know in the report that the big states in Latin America - Venezuela, Brazil & Argentina will not recognise Kosovo will be more than likely be followed by Ecuador, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Chile, Mexico and Cuba. Then you have the vast overwhelming majority of states in Africa (headed by ANC led South Africa) then throw in China, Russia, approx 10 EU states, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan etc. and you have Kosovo struggling badly. 40 out of 200 and even a fewer amount will recognise the new 'Kosova' passport. Looks like a nasty hangover awaits the party goes in Pristina tomorrow morning as they wake up and realise they've no jobs to go to.

All Serbia has to do is to continue with the diplomatic offensive. 'Kosova' wont be admitted to the UN or EU anytime soon.

Welcome to the world's newest colony

EA

It is mostly important for Kosova to be recognised as an independent country by USA, very relevant EU coutries as well as neighbours and Arab world. That would be sufficent for a small country like Kosova. In the meantime the powerful democracies in the world will persuade the new democratic countries why Kosova's independence is RIGHT and a must for the stability of the Balkan.

Request for recognition is out and every country will do it in its own convenience. Serbia will do it some day too, when they will realize that doing so it is the best thing that they can do.

This article is from the Council on Foreign Relations in the US. If anyone doesn't know who they are, just know they currently control world power. Check the http://www.foreignaffairs.org/20080101faessay87102-p0/g-john-ikenberry/the-rise-of-china-and-the-future-of-the-west.html

Serbs need to realize that they can not be forever Russia's toy. They need to stand for them selfs towards EU. Everybody knows Kosova has been independent for some time now. Wake up people
