It is very sad that serbia can not go through with the fact that kosovo is now a independent state, they should think for they future generations more and send them towards europe.Actually what connect serbs and kosovars(nothing)language not religion not accept it people.

Kris

Well, it has happened.

Kosovo is independent. 70% Unemployment, most of the economy is based upon barter, and the disbanded KLA is now actively involved in Drug trafficing, Sex/Human Trade, and money laundering. I don't get it why someone would consider this a state? Did everyone forget that the KLA was officially branded as a terrorist organization by the US State Department at one time. But of course they became "Freedom Fighters". I am disappointed that the US would push and back up a seccessionist/breakawat into carving a piece of land from a founding member of the United Nations. It is not logical, it makes no sense, and I truly believe this actually a new beginning for Kosov"a" in terms of nightmare. Does everyone remember the Iraqis waving US flags and chanting USA USA USA...when they were pulling down Saddams Statue? It looks to me they are worse off today than before. US Policy at work. By the way, Miami has a large Hispanic culture. Hmm...maybe the post from above is not so wrong. Independance in the next few decades.
Also, the one Power Plant that Kosovo has for generating Engery is run by water supplied by Serbia. Wow, that sucks. Kosovo's largest trading partner, if I am not mistaken 70% of trade is Serbia. Wow again. That sucks again. Despite all the signs written on the wall and setup for Long Term failue the EU goes along with independance. Actually, Belgium is on the verge of splitting too. True. Look it up. Maybe someone will learn a lesson after all.

Who really care? What they are going to achieve? Very simple nothing for good, but in contrast they are not going to suck the investments flow from international community. Serbian political leaders are trying to make believe their citizens for something they do not believe themselves. They know very well, they can't do nothing, they are powerless toward the international community, but they are just trying to retain they seats and energize you guys with natinalistic rhetoric.

Legally nothing has changed. 1244 still applies.

As for EU and US, they can no longer invoke international law in future since they just broke it. Eg. when Corsica or Caledonia do a UDI from France.

Let's see how much money the UK, France, Germany & the US send to a poor new country.

You have something to be proud of, now you're as poor as albania!!

Well, this is rather pointless. But that was the idea all along anyway.

I mean, I really don't care much either way. I'm interested on this matter from the foreign policy and strategy stand point, not for either cause. And on the strategy, all I have to say is the following:

When your territorial integrity is endangered, you do anything you can to protect it. Particularly when the greatest danger comes from foreign powers.

When Jeremic stated that Serbia would do anything but war to fight for Kosovo, that pretty much sealed it. Even if you're not willing to go to war, you never state that. You're supposed to at least lie and let the enemy think you're willing to fight for what's yours. Once you assume you won't fight, that's the same as saying "we'll accept Kosovo's independence but beware because we'll be very vocal about it". As if being vocal will do you much good.

Andy, U.K.

Can Kosovo ever become truly independent? There certainly seems to be some naivete among the supporters of independence on the streets of Pristina, if the display of US, UK and NATO flags is anything to go by. The owners of these flags are not especially tolerant to small countries that want to pursue an independent course of action.

The events in Pristina have undoubtedly dealt a blow to the people of Serbia as a whole. However, the whole of Europe will suffer from the presence of a what is likely to be a very unstable US satellite state in one of the most volatile corners of our continent.

Churchill might have said that to British people but there was a little difference. Britain had allies with them at the time, while Serbia has scared them all away.

To the others that doubt in the New Country I would suggest not to be as scared since you have accepted a far more dangerous state "Serbia" so why not Kosova.

All Albanians have celebrated today, in Prishtina, Tirana, Skopje. Finally the Albanians are going to be heard in EU policies and there are better times coming.

While Albaians are celebrating is Serbian government going down?

I hope the Albanians are happy .

Before the beginning of the last century , Serbs were a MAJORITY in kosovo . 100s of Orthodox Monasteries are in kosovo , testament to whom this region belongs . After a century of illegal immigration from Albania , abuse , intimidation and expulsion , there are now virtually no Serbs left in KosovO .

Serbia has 3 choices :
1. Use all available means to tell their story , the true story , to the world . Put the fight to the western media . Fight in the courts etc .
2. Forcable partition .
3. Go to war .
In the end , however , nothing good can happen from this .

I am not sure if anything like this has happened to another country in the world actually .

Serbs have been removed completely from Krajina and Kosovo and there are half a million refugees in Serbia . And the world calls Serbia the aggressor . Genius .

It does not matter one iota what Ron or any other non-realistic Serb, including your nationalistic PM Kostunica, thinks about Kosova. It is now an independent state. Any denying will not bring it back in the Serbian state fold. Grandstanding never helped anyone.

What is even better is that Kosovo Serbs will stay put as they know that soon they will be better off in Kosova than in an isolated and Russia friendly Serbia.

This is truly a tragedy. I hope no countries recognize this farce of a 'country.'

Albanians, after all, have their own country. This was an invasion and takeover by gradual colonization. If they wanted to live in their own homeland, they should have gone home to Albania, instead of stealing the territory of the Serbs.

But this position also raises some sticky positions. If Albanians who lived in Serbia shouldn't be permitted to secede because they already have their own homeland, then that invalidates the actions of the Serbs in BiH and Croatia during the 1990's.

"Kosovo's unilateral declaration of a false state is the final act of a policy that started with the NATO aggression against Serbia in 1999," the prime minister said.

They can declare anything and recognition by some EU countries, the US and various Middle East countires does not mean anything. No EU, UN, IMF and other memberships. It will be as long as it lasts be merely a EU/NATO protectorate.

"Never has the truth about why Serbia was savagely destroyed by NATO bombs been more clear," he continued, and added that "NATO's military interests lie behind the proclamation of this false state."

NATO's and US' policy to divide Europe and control energy resources.

The prime minister severely criticized the United States, saying that this country preferred force to the UN Charter and accused it of shamelessly breaching the international order.

It will come back to haunt them when by 2050 whites will be a minority in the US and when Europe has finally become a part of the Middle East.

"The United States have also humiliated the European Union, and forced it to trample on the principles it is built upon," Koštunica added, and warned that Europe, "which has lowered its head", will be responsible "for all the serious consequences that Kosovo's independence carries with it."

Today the EU has dug its own grave and maybe it should consider itself the newest quasi state of the US. From now on there is no way back and the US will start imposing more and more on the EU. You show weakness and others will abuse it at will.

Koštunica repeated that the government will annul all documents that relate to the creation of a false state on the sovereign territory of the Republic of Serbia.

According to the Serbian constitution and UN 1244 Kosovo is a legal part of The Republic of Serbia. This is not a despearte and in denial statement. The so-called declaration of being under supervision for a long time cannot change that fact.

Meanwhile, President Boris Tadić issued a statement to the media, where he says Serbia will do "everything to annul the self-styled and illegal declaration of Kosovo's independence."

Be more specific Mr. President.

"Serbia will never recognize Kosovo and Metohija's independence," the statement said, but added that the state "must not now undertake hasty moves".

Just sit down and see what will happen will not solve anything either.

He also appealed "on all citizens and our compatriots in Kosovo and Metohija" to be "guided by reason" in the coming days.

One has to see how reasonable one can stay if one is told to leave or else.

"Serbia has reacted and will react with all peaceful, diplomatic and legal means to annul this act of Kosovo's temporary institutions. Serbia is asking international institutions in Kosovo to immediately declare this act null and void, as it stands in contravention of the basic principles of international law," the president said.

You are asking the same institutions that have looked the other way for almost 9 years and expect them to listen now?

Tadić called for "restrain and peace" from citizens, parties and the media several times in his statement, stressing that the lives and property of people are of utmost importance at this moment, and urged KFOR and UNMIK in the province to protect the Serbs there from possible outbreaks of violence by the ethnic Albanian majority there.

There is no way that can be guarenteed. As soon as Kosovo Serbs get into trouble the Serbian Army has the duty the defend them. Do not worry, NATO will not dare to bomb Serbia again and since agreements have been stepped upon there is no reason to keep Serbia's part of the agreement. Let's see what will happen the coming hours/days/weeks.

Let's see how much money the UK, France, Germany & the US send to a poor new country.

You have something to be proud of, now you're as poor as albania!!
