I am 100% American not happy with our policey in Kosovo. We Americans have our own problems and we are not paying attention to what our Gov is doing, sorry.

John

Serbia is not a member of EU or NATO. Its province is under UN control, allowed by Serbia. By EU and NATO pushing out UN and sending its mission there it is effectively occupying a part of Serbia, and there is not a single law that would say that justice and law is not on Serbian side. EU has allowed itself to become an invading empire, breaking legal international norms and that will come back to haunt Europe, the price will be dear.

The Swiss

To the Swiss, probably a Serb,

Wrong Joe, am Swiss but am sick and tired of this political hypocrisy starting with my own country. Am also sick and tired to read day after day in our local newspapers about the drug distributed around the schools by the K-Albanians conncection! These same people are controlling what is today's Kosovo! Switzerland might be a reach country but has problems of it's own with a high percentage of inhabitants having difficulty to close the end of the month, so sorry why should the tax payer's money go to a 'country' that have been always living from traffiking of all sorts, including human and that never wanted to change and will never change! If they really wanted it so badly why didn't they claim it before, why waiting more than 10 years, and now in a magic stick move all these people will be white with the blessing of european coward politicians, this is just a shame that the history will not forget!

Zoran,

The UN is irrelevant for a very long time, maybe since the Hungarian Revolution in 1956. It is a costly and useless "thing", where the USA's contribution is 24-25%. This is the first time we agree one one thing, it s/b abolished. In practical terms it is already replaced by a new world order, where our country the US is the leader.

Zoran

pre 16 godina

If this is allowed to happen, bypassing the UN, then the UN is no longer a valid entity for upholding international law, mediating conflicts or guarding the sovereignty of nation states. If K-indy happens without a UN stamp of approval then the UN should be dismembered and a new world order should be established. How this "new order" would look like I am not sure, but the thought scares the heck out of me.

I am so excited about these developments which, in any event, are long overdue. They are beginning to celebrate in Pristina, and my only regret is that I cannot be there to join in the independence festivities. Independence for Kosovo/a is supported by freedom-loving people throughout the world, but this special greeting is coming from far-away California, from myself and many of my friends and associates. Long live freedom and democracy!! Peace
in the Balkans and around the world.

To the Swiss, probably a Serb,

Yes Kosovo is poor, the economy is weak but this is an additional reason to help.
Both the US and the EU will help independent Kosovo in the coming years with billions of dollars. Switzerland, a very rich country can do the same by setting a good example.

GNH Blagoevgrad: It is not true that 1244 is dead. Swedish FM Carl Bildt just announced that the decision to send the EU mission is based on 1244. This means 1244 is alive and well. Many in here, mostly Serbian posters but not only them, don't understand that almost every Balkan nation, even those that are now part of EU, need an European mission like this one. It would be the best boost for a faster EU destination. One day Serbia proper will be convinced that it will be needed for them as well. Until then, Serbian citizens will fly high on radical nationalism and ride low on achievements. Not to far from now, many of you will be surprised to see Kosova and Kosovans be more welcomed and accepted than any Balkan nation in European circles. Kosovan openness is already a proven thing. What will happen to Serbia? I see it dark...

Ahmet

I get the impression that Albanians think supposed independence will be the end of their problems.

I am merely stating that, given the situation in Kosovo, achieving economic progress is going to be one huge task.

It's easy to blame everyone else for your problems but I think in the end you'll realise it is only the Albanians themselves holding everythinig back. You will not be able to blame the Serbs anymore.

When you come to this realisation, please don't hurt the Serbs. I mean, why did you kill Serbs and burn churches in 2004? You were under UN control. Why has UNMIK failed and why do you think the EU force will succeed? Who is going to invest in Kosovo if corruption is ripe?

You may get some initial handouts but then what? Lets wait and see.

Ahmet Isufi

pre 16 godina

ZK UK, you are coming up with to many IFS. If this happens, if that happens , etc...
There is no if and buts about it, the history is being corected after so many decades of wrongs done to K-Albanians.

ZK UK

pre 16 godina

So the EU force is going in with police and judges.

The K-Serbs will have nothing to do with them. So it means they will basically oversee the Albanians to hunt down war criminals, corrupt officials, drug and people traffikers to name a few.

Now I expect some of these people to be influential and in high places and could possibly turn against them.

There is a high risk experiment that could explode in the face of the EU.

What will happen if life does not improve for the average Albanian? Will they turn against their masters? Will they take it out on Serbs?

Even with supposed support from Albania, Macedonia and Montenegro - a donor's conference and everything else thrown in, with such a high unemployment rate, little expectation of investment and more importantly, corruption at the core, success is far from guaranteed.

Soon the Albanians will realise it wasn't the lack of supposed independence holding back progress but rather themselves.

Tom O'Donoghue

pre 16 godina

My feeling is that those EU countries who oppose Kosovo independence do not see this mission as such a big deal. They are wrong about this but at the same time it is these same countries who have prevented a united EU recognition of this independence. This may be more important in the long run because now it will be individual countries dealing with Kosovo, not the Union as a bloc. Basically, the EU as a body is not recognising Kosovo independence. This is not what the K-Albanians wanted.

limited

pre 16 godina

One of the next steps will be to deport the Kosovo Albanians back to their "free" state from those very same EU countries.

Protection of minorities has been a second or third priority for those EU countries already in Kosovo. That won't change. They're going to set their goals on securing mineral resources and repressing the freedom in the Northern part of this Southern Serb territory; it will declare its independence from Pristina's control. The EU won't like that. They think that they'll direct everything in their new colony.

Meanwhile, I bet Ceku is creating an army with help from the EU and, of course, Albania.

Just so you know, if you read nes more carefully you find out that hat im about to say is true: Kosovo institutions (Assembly I think!) have decided over state's symbols, i.e. the flag, the coat of arms. Except the national anthem. On Sunday, all these new state symbols will be part of celebration, I guess, and as for the national anthem i heard they're going to play EU anthem, Symphony No. 9 from Beethoven. Some extra, unbiased info wouldnt kill you, would it?

As for EULEX, it is a great move by EU. From today on, Kosovo is specifially EU mission which means that 1244 is dead, which means that kosovo is not part of serbia anymore which means we're witnessing the birth of the newest state in europe!

kate

pre 16 godina

Actually, Afrim, that is because many EU countries view the EU mission replacing the UN mission as something separate from the recognition of independence.

They see the former as inevitable and the latter as questionable, and are free to object to either. Let's see what transpires. Nothing is a done deal, even after the expected party on Sunday.

Personally, I can't see the joy in being run by the EU and dictated to within a protectorate. The Albanian, not Kosovo, flag is being flown, most of the local police force are to be made redundant, and the North of Kosovo will immediately be partitioned.

Becoming an illegal colony of the US and EU and having them control all of your institutions is hardly the same as having a free Kosovo.

But I'm all for the Kosovo Albanians looking through rose tinted lenses at times like these. At least it means that violence against minorities can be staved off.

kufr

pre 16 godina

It seems Serbia again has a good case here. It can file legal action against every country that participates in this illegal mission. Just take the cases to Hague. It would get rid of all questionmarks related to the legality of the mission.

Jim

pre 16 godina

They accepted it because they knew that if they didn't then the UN would leave and Kosovo would be left without any international oversight. They will still not recognise the 'independence' of Kosovo, along with many others. So, accepting this is simply a way to ensure that Kosovo Albanians behave and don't abuse the Kosovo Serbs and the minority communities while they enjoy their fake state.

EA

EU mission means supervision of what the Kosovar Albanina has committed themselves to, a democratic independent Kosova where ethnic minorities rights are fully respected. Why Serbia was objection all of this, just to show they are "in control".

Romania, Cyprus, Slovakia... They did not object this?
