Do try to understand - predominantly Albanians -

You cannot ignore the UN charter and international law at will, then expect to be part of that body.

Kosovo if it declares independence will be an illegal state, as any moves will be nullified by Serbia. It can be recognized 100 times by USA, it will NOT get a seat in the UN.

Serbia's borders are recognized by UN - including Kosovo, therefore Kosovo is part of Serbia, and cannot hold an independent seat within UN.

I know that the words resolution 1244, UN charter, international law..etc don't make any sense to you on their own.

Heres your chance to put them into perspective.

Mike, peggy, just a short note.
Kosova/o willl be voted on General Assembly. Russia can NOT, I repeat can NOT stop it, since all the members of the general Assembly will vote on it.
China was inducted on UN by the sponsorship of Albania, by the way. Maybe its time to return the favor?!
Mike, sometimes if you are at the point further away from the problem its easier to see the problem and analyze it.
I'm sure, you, being in Belgrade right now are not being realistic.
Cheers.

Russia will block you every time.
Why get ahead of yourselves? You won't get that far anyway

(peggy, 15 February 2008 14:24)

Peggy, is that the same Russia that was going to block the independence of Kosova?

Mike

Lazer,

My rhetoric has largely remained the same. It's just that things are finally coming to a head, and things that are in motion cannot be undone but they could still cause large degrees of instability.

Nevertheless, if Kosovo gains a seat at the UN it will mean that either Russia or China did not veto its membership. Right now, that would mean a number of compromises are reached on the ground. But as it stands now, whether you, I, or anyone else likes it or not, Kosovo's presence at the UN is still largely limited.

Take Taiwan for instance. China will always block its membership. Russia says it will do the same for Kosovo. So again, Thaci can say what he wants, but reality is currently dictating otherwise.

One way or the other the time has come and Kosovo will declare Independance sometime over the weekend, this is Thaci's and he will make sure no one will steal it from him, there will be dancing in Mother Teresa St, (newly done at the cost of millions not counting some that disapeared into someone's pocket)there will be a big huge cake with the map of Kosovo on it, friendly fire by shooting AK 47's into the air, drinking, fireworks (which will be good because the power is out so much it will help us see what's going on)and the word Independence, not forgetting the flag and athem, this will last for 2 or 3 days, the at some stage the EU will come in, with people who know nothing about the region, put into positions they don't deserve to be in, taking American money to keep the mission going but not giving American's any decent job's, but the EU won't make the same mistakes as they did in Bosina, (right!! it will be worse) and lastly all of a sudden a few months down the road, people will start to realize that things have not changed, power is still as bad, no job's, food prices have gone up, more corrubtion, more poverty and who will they blame then?? the Serb's are gone, so is UNMIK, I guess the EU will get the blame, because god forbid they would blame themselves, Independence or not nothing will change, after 6 years of being here I say leave them to it.

Ok pplz. I'd just like to let you all konw that you can't get a seat in the UN because of the Russian and Chinese veto. That means
1)You can't have your own flag (legally)
2)You can't have your own national anthem (legally)
3)And the land on which you are making your country will legally be a part of Serbia.
@Kim Sweden
There haven't been many attempts to take a country's territory by force since the UN was founded. And none have been recognized. The last time this happened was when Germany took a part of Chehoslovakia, and that set of WW2.
Signing off, Crveni Vuk

Blero, Lazer and the rest who think that Kosovo has a chance of being accepted in the UN I say, have you forgotten about Russia?

Russia will block you every time.
Why get ahead of yourselves? You won't get that far anyway.

First you have to get independence (I mean real independence in the UN) and then you can think about joining the UN.

Since you have a snow flake's chance in hell of getting that independence through UN, you have as much chance of having a seat in the UN.

Mike, Thaci has been in the UNSC closed session.
The UN has tours in every language, you can go and visit the UN general Assembly and watch the session live from the Gallery up there.

I am very surprized, Mike that since you are in Serbia right now, how much you have changed your rethoric.
Regardless, Kosova/o is becoming INDEPENDENT, and I hope that all the peoples of the Balkans live in peace with each other.

Only a month ago the pro-Serb camp was laughing when the independence was mentioned.
Well one thing is encouraging.
The fact that the same camp is no more advocating against the independence (as it is a done deal), but against the Kosova UN membership is something special.
The day of independence is here.
Shortly the day we join the UN will arrive. You never know, we might just pull that one as well.
In all the honesty, personally I am not bothered when we will join the UN.
What the Kosova should prioritise is the wellbeing of its citizens.
Give people jobs, rights and future prospects and everybody will be happy.
UN membership is merely a symbol to hang one the wall in my opinion.

Independence from Serbia is the beggining and the end, all the rest, UN membership, economic blocades, is details which will be solved in due time.

Mike

So Thaci wants UN membership but is planning on declaring an independent country outside the UN.

Here's how it works: you get your independence through the UN and you can pretty much guarantee a seat in the UN. If it's not through the UN, the only way Thaci can see the inside of the General Assembly is if he comes as a tourist.

I'm sure they give guided tours in Albanian.

But we will grant in trip to Hague and i`ll personally pay for that trip.
Everything else is tripping talk.
