Let see. What promises has EU made to Tadic regarding Kosova's status? None.
For the obstacles in UN you only has to ask Russia, and I repeat ONLY Russia.

You are naive and arrogant to seriously think that Kosovo will be totally independant.

It is and will be a EU protectorate while Serbia will continue to hold nominal sovereignty under an illegal framework for "Supervised Independance"

Boris Nikolic has opened the doors for Serbia and the EU while putting a lid on Kosovo for the short term.

They have actually agree to put together the mission, but the decision as to when they should send it won't be made until Feb 18th.

That's when opposition voices within the EU will be raised. And if it is pushed through without agreement of the legal host nation of Serbia, then there will be an emergency UN meeting.

Let's hope that sanity and international law prevail over turning Kosovo into a play state for the US.

It should also be remembered that if the mission does go there, it will be to take over the NATO mission, not necessarily to oversee independence.

The whole thing is going to get very messy if the EU go ahead with this, not just in terms of breaching international law but in terms of what will happen on the ground.

The UN will be bound by its own charter to defend Serbia's borders if there is a violation by the EU.

What leverage does Tadic have with the EU? "You must get approval from the UN, but I will sign any agreement you give me" Kostunica is the true Serbian leader. Vladimir Putin is a better Serb than Tadic.

Ratko, Milan, Mike .. and co.

I raise the question again.
Is anyone asking Tadic or Kostunica for permission on the mission? Leave aside your indocrination and your bitterness. My tone is not arrogant, is realistic.

And one more thing.
Did really anyone of you believe that by selecting Tadic Serbia would make EU withdraw from its decision?
What backstabbing are we talking about? It was crystal clear from beginning that the rhetoric was shun down just to give Tadic a boost. Now everyone comes "suprised";
Wow how could EU do this to Tadic!!

To Mike: "Miri, it matters little what you think. Tadic is the President of Serbia, and if the EU wants to make good on the promises they made in agreeing to work with him, they should abide by international law. Besides, if it's such an open and shut case for Kosovo's independence, there shouldn't be any reason why there will be any obstacles in the UN, right?"

Good one Tadic! Now it is up to Kostunica to respond and act to end this stupid squabbling that has been going on and which is only serving to weaken the voice of Serbia. I think the country needs both of these men.

I find Tadic's line of reasoning here to be sound, and if anything is to be done properly you better believe miri that the internationally-recognized President and Prime Minister of a country should be not only "asked" (i.e. consulted) but asked for consideration and permission when international border changes are being proposed. It is high time for the Americans and former Colonial Powers of Europe to abide by the international laws that THEY created and imposed on the world if they want real global security and stability.

I am pleased that Tadic took this stance in the home country of the "special envoy" Martii Ahtisaari, who has always been unabashedly opposed to the equal treatment of the Serbian position in the various Balkan crises.

It is never too late to do the right thing.

"Tadić also repeated that Serbia will not recognize Kosovo's possible unilaterally declared independence, and remains in favor of continued talks between the ethnic Albanian leadership in Priština and authorities in Belgrade"

There are some mighty powerful countries in the UN who won't like the EU trying to undermine, or go around their authority. Countries which the EU needs to pay attention to for economic and political reasons.

That aside, when was the last time Belgrade and the Albanian leadership had talks?

Whether you like it or not Kosovo is a legal part of the Republic of Serbia and sending an uninvited mission can be regarded as an act of violence and violation of UN 1224. I think that the Serbian government has evry right to resist this EU decision that has most likely been excepted without the approval of all EU member (considering the rush to push it through). The Serbian government should inform with certain countries that have openly indicated that they are against an independent Kosovo whether or not they actually supported this proposed mission. By the way, nobody is asking the Kosovo Albanians as well so maybe you should moderate your aggressive and arrogant tone.
