"this can only help ALL of the citizens of both nations, which include many ethnicites, "

I have a strong feeling, all inhabitants of Kosovo will travel on Serbian passports - you too. Unless you want to apply for a visa even if going to toilet.

So much about "citizens". Even for dual citizens: you are a citizen of the country what passport is recognized at the border.

Seriously, I was denied my US passport being recognized in a third country (Germany) just because I had a E.U. identity card with me. They even told me: "don't show us that 'THING' next time!" The 'THING' was a perfectly valid American passport. This is not a joke, keep it in your mind if you say the word "CITIZEN". Apropos, recognition and power. Here, United States of America has a bit different world status than Kosovo. Still, it's passport can become merely a "thing".

i think we should see this week as a win-win proposition: in serbia, they have decided AGainst extremism and a return to the bad (terrible) old days, in favor of democracy and towards european integration (though there are still so many obstacles, but at least it is a STep.) in kosova, we are about to announce the date of official independence, for which i have personally been awaiting, with great impatience, for the last years... there is no need to continue the hate fest that we read here, day in and day out, especially (but not exclusively) from certain posters living in jolly old england. the past in the balkans is filled with horrors, and no one needs to exaggerate them, they are very real and all too recent. but it Doesn't mean they need to be repeated. we need to learn from them and move on. now, for once, there is some real hope that BOTH serbia and Kosova can move on, perhaps in some ways on parallel tracks. this can only help ALL of the citizens of both nations, which include many ethnicites, not just a few. the time for threats, narrow nationalism, boycotts, etc is OVer. tadic has a very particular opportunity here, whatever i personally think of him -- he can turn this mandate into a real referrendum and replace the threats and bullying with a pragmatic and progressive move that accepts the reality of an independent kosova, and looks to the PEOple and not to failed past policies.

Look at the picture, scratch your head.

Imagine Tadic giving an interview in his office about Serbia's independence next to a Bolivian flag on his desk.

Than look again at the picture. I have a funny feeling, it's about a Great Albania.

Look at the Wiki, get the clout:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hashim_Thaci

"By 1993, Thaci joined the Kosovar Albanian political emigration in Switzerland. There he became one of the founders of the People's Movement of Kosovo (LPK), a Marxist-Leninist political party in Kosovo devoted to Albanian nationalism and the movement to unify all Albanian-populated areas into one state. "

Bravo. Not just Great Albania but also Marxism-Leninism.

And you trust what a communist does say? Rugova is crying in his grave.

Is Kosovo ever going to declare independence or will they just say they will?
(Peter Sudyka, 4 February 2008 15:17)

Peter, I fully understand and share your fustration, I too can barely cope with the suspense. Still, good things do come to those who wait..., and you won't have to wait much longer. See you soon in FREE Kosova

"With Serbia in pro Europe mode, there is no way that the EU will wish to unbalance that for the sake of pleasing the US. It would be madness and could trigger off a region wide war. "

Wonder where you have been for the past months!
To the contrary of what you say, is precisely why Europe wanted Tadic to win. I don't know with what kind of twisted logic you conclude that now Serbia could go to the "wide war". Europe has supported Kosova's independence for years. Having Tadic in the presidence of Serbia is the best scenario for Europe. For K-Albanians it doesn't really matter much. If Nikolic had won would have been slightly easier to declare independence, by if our allies wanted Tadic so be it, if our allies are happy we are happy too.

Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to convince you, that would be a "mission impossible", I am just trying to ... I don't really know what I am trying to do!!

Talks will be resumed and a mutually acceptable solution sought.

(kate, 4 February 2008 13:53)

Which part of the acceptable solution are you referring to?
We want nothing but independence; you are offering nothing more that autonomy.
Where do you cut the middle point?
Are you that naive to expect for us to accept anything less after all that has happened?
What are the chances of that happening?
Accepting what Serbia is offering is the same as if the lamb takes wolfs word that is will not be eaten.
Let’s face the facts.
Kosovo and Serbia never functioned as one State.
Let’s at least work together as separate ones. You respect us and we will respect you.
Kate, it is going to happen and neither you nor anybody in this forum can stop it.
The question is: what can we do to help everybody in Kosovo, all of them. Think about it.

While Kate keeps dreaming that the irreversable will be reversed, the EU has already found a name for it's mission, has gathered all the necessary people, and is about to send this mission with or without anyone's consent.

Instructions seem to be to keep this entire affair as low key as possible hence the thick fog around the specifics. The day will be announced on the very last minute to avoid any massive public reaction. That would be a sensible step and a good opportunity by the K-leadership to show some degree of humility on this never ending circle of speculations.
I doubt very much though that this would prevent the spontaneous jubilations on streets of Kosova.
Trust sons of the eagle not to break into a dancing ring or a snake for that matter.

Maybe after the elections in Spain or elsewhere :)))). Hm, but it is interesting to read about the Albanian foreign minister serving as a messenger, seems USA could not trust Slovenians :)))

kate

pre 16 godina

It makes no difference when it's announced. Now, more than ever, there will be a greater number of EU nations against recognising Kosovo's UDI, and certainly no consensus.

That means that there will be no official or legal recognition of Kosovo as an independent nation. Talks will be resumed and a mutually acceptable solution sought.

With Serbia in pro Europe mode, there is no way that the EU will wish to unbalance that for the sake of pleasing the US. It would be madness and could trigger off a region wide war.

Does the US or any of the pro independence nations intend to send troops into Serbia to fight to protect any illegally formed borders? And what do they expect Russia to do in that situation?

Does Bush at this crucial time want to prioritise such madness? He has already said that it is an EU matter - so now it is down to them. And many EU states will not carry through such actions.
