I congratulate you for the election of the new president. More than ever you all ( 50.5+47.9 ) need to be united, so that Kosovo will ever ever ever ever... be part of Serbia. The European dream is to cancel the frontiers, not to put a new one inside the other countries. An intens diplomatic effort could make some countries ( from EU ) to step back and admit Serbia "in integrum" in EU. Good luck !

i am glad that the young people of belgrade were celebrating last night, that they felt there was something wonderful to celebrate. their countypeople, at least the majority, are determined to overthrow the bad old days. yes, tadic won by a coalition of the willing, as we say here. he needs to understand that, and move away from nationalist dogma and into a better future. we do NOT have to get stuck in the muck, whatever certain posters here wish to claim. we can move ahead, but it will not be easy. on another, PROgressive balkan website i read (in english) an interview by one of the liberal party officials (not cedi, but another). she suggests that rather than being the last, serbia should be the FIRST country to recognize kosova, and to offer (i paraphrase) the olive branch. of course this will not happen, but i appreciate what this very bright and independent lady is suggesting. there are great leaders and human rights figures in serbia, and it is to THese people that we should be looking for inspiration.

Step I is achieved --Tadic won democratic elections.

Step II--USA, EU and Kosova waits for one week of QUIET in Serbia (so the facts that Tadic has won and no incidents from Nikoloc--so Kosova can declare independence.

Step III--If this goes well, Slovenia, Usa, to be followed by EU countries (France, England, Germany) will follow. In about a months time all EU recognize Kosova. In about 1 year Russia will recognize Kosova as well. If an incident happens however, Kosova will be recognized by all accept Russia in 3 days after declaration of independence.

It is obviouse that Nikolic won not Tadic. But something else was presented to poeple and media. Reason: If Nikolic would be president of serbia than within a month serbian eccomomy would fail. All donors would leave serbia. All projects would stope. Serbia would be isolated. Europe would gave up supporting serbia. Potencila investitors would not invest in serbia. Russia what do they have to offer serbia exept gas nothing. Not taking into konideration Kosova which automaticaly would be in better position if Nikloc would be declared as president what realy should happen because he won and not Tadic. Serbian people selected him as president of Serbia. Even Nikolic agrred with this political solution knowing that his presidency would bring pain to serbia.

Therefore the number for Kosova's Support has been getting LARGER AND LARGER, not the way you think.

I was at the victory rally held in downtown Belgrade. What a night!

It was a truly amazing experience. There were Serbs young and old there, but the night definitely belonged to Belgrade's youth who formed the vast majority. They flew DS, Serbian, and EU flags. You could see it in their faces that they want change. They want the EU, they want an end to the Nikolics of Serbia. Total strangers were dancing with each other in the street, car horns were honking, people packed 6-deep into those tiny Yugos zipping through the streets.

These are not the crazy nationalists everyone (particularly our predictable Albanian friends) seems to think.

Is there any website (even if it's only in Serb) where the breakdown of the results are shown for each electoral district? And as a suggestion, maybe it would be interesting to pain a map with the regions where each candidate won.

Bruce

pre 16 godina

For once I agree with Princip that a Tadic victory has made recognition of Kosovo more difficult. A Nikolic victory would have looked like a return to the Milosevic days, and no one would have accepted there was any way Kosovo could remain Serbian.
I'm not sure what will happen now, but the EU have actually been surprisingly accommodating to Serbia (despite the howls on this site). They have offered far more than Bosnia is getting, and Macedonia's membership negotiations will probably be delayed. I can actually see the status quo existing for a while. I think an EU mission will occur. But I don't see why that is synonymous with independence. As I have said before, I think partition of Kosovo is the only way to please the most people, but maybe some sort of international protetorate with nominal Serbian sovereignty (however that would still ecquire some sort of international recognition and serbian constitutional change)

Niall O'Doherty

pre 16 godina

Lili,

You are generalising there a bit too much, but there is an element of truth in what you said. Nikolic did indeed court the minority vote and no doubt a few did support him but most (80%) went to Tadic. However many ethnic Serbs voted Tadic as well. What carried it for Tadic in the end were the young, urban voters as well as the Hungarians, Muslims and Belgrade & Preshevo Albanians who gave Tadic a big boost.

bganon

pre 16 godina

Lets not forget one thing when talking about minorities and Serbs voting for Tadic - the diaspora (of those that bothered to vote) voted for Tadic in London, New York, Moscow, Chicago, Banja Luka, Zagreb etc.

On the other hand it was Nikolic who draped himself in Marija Serifovic courting the roma minority (gypsy) vote. He also got support from other minority groups such as vlachs.

Oh Suzana,

There is no reason to be sad after the results. That is called democracy. If I did criticize Tadic for his campaign it does not mean that I or Jovan or Kate support radicals. Did anyone of us here actually support Nikolic out loud? No, I don't think so. I learnt not to trust any of them. Nonetheless, I do admit that EU's meddling into our election process did make me very angry and radical at some point. I cannot digest any more the lies and empty promises from the EU, especially not when they are trying to rip away a part of our country. If you can accept humiliation then ok, I cannot. Some are more proud, some less. Frankly, last night we only proved to be very loyal rabbits easy to manipulate. By the end of the year the EU's attitude towards Serbia won't change at all. I wish I was wrong, but unfortunately the EU gave me no reason to trust them. And I am really sorry that you might find it ridiculous but I would really like us to keep Kosovo in Serbia's boundaries. Guess, I cannot expect the same from someone who never visited Kosovo and Metohija.

It remains to be seen how Mr. Tadic will handle a very difficult political turmoil Serbia is heading to. On the other hand, it is staggering to note that when it comes to the votes of ethnic Serbs, Mr. Nikolic and the ideology he represents got the majority. Minorities saved Serbia and its European future this time (see results in Vojvodina and Sandzak). Hopefully they will get something in return.

Actually, Suzana, it's not my flag to fly at half mast or otherwise, but I wanted Tadic to win.

I also believe that Kosovo should not become independent - the same as Mr Tadic and a growing number of Europeans and Americans.

Now that Europe has seen the willingness of Serbia to move forward they will be more likely to respect her sovereignty, not less.

Princip, UK

Suzana,

"With Tadic as the president of Serbia it is much easier for Western countries to recognize Kosovo independent. "

- you are so wrong on this the EU will find it all the harder to persuade the wavering and undecided EU majority to go along with the "few" EU who blindly follow US foreign policy!

Thus far it looks like only the UK openly have sided with the US. Germany, France and Italy are inclined to but have not stated with any great certainty that they would. It's likely to be put off again and again given Germany is very dependant on Russian gas, France's Sarkozy is probably on honeymoon and the Italians hold elections themselves!

On the other hand there has been a very resolute and clear message from those who oppose and they stated they will not allow this to happen from Cyrus, Greece, Slovakia, Romania. Of course we know Spain is not keen and they have their own elections in March to contend.

The fact remains that Tadic has won and if he is true to his words then he too will ensure a United Serbia in EUrope is the only way!!!

I guess Suzana your still hoping for an illegal declaration of Dependence on the 6th Feb ! Or don't tell me you won't give any certain date for this illegal dependence?

Serbia yesterday said NO to fascist inspired ultranationalism and at the same time they told the world that their European integration is more important than the status of Kosovo, a place only few of them have been to.

With Tadic as the president of Serbia it is much easier for Western countries to recognize Kosovo independent.

The biggest looser is Kostunica who was 100 % convinced Nikolic was going to win and refused categorically to support his coalition partner Tadic.

Is there any website (even if it's only in Serb) where the breakdown of the results are shown for each electoral district? And as a suggestion, maybe it would be interesting to pain a map with the regions where each candidate won.

Oh Yes Beni and I take you also believe there are Polar bears in Šar Planina ?!

Maybe they got confused with the Sar planinac sheepdog!

Your assertions that Nikolic really won are based on what facts. That it would be convenient to you.

Were you carrying out a one man election monitoring operation.

Stop the conspiracy theories.

Your wishful thinking is a good way to excape from reality. I thought it was going to be in December for sure right?

Beni,
Spell-check and grammar are your friends. All of the following would be caught by any basic spell-checker: konideration, stope, agrred. Notice how many of our Serbian posters speak perfect english.

Good luck !
