I think Putin would be extremely happy to see a lot of naive Americans like you.
Yes it is still the bad evil Russia, this time with a terrible inferiority complex.
Luckily for us she is not as powerful anymore as it used to be but we have to be vigilent. We hoped that the Cold War is over but the Putin gang is bringing it back. Fortunately the ex-satellite countries are now in the NATO. Even some Russian politicians like Chubais are admitting that Russia became very aggressive
and confrontational toward the West and that can badly hurt her in a worsening global economic situation.
Nowadays Russia tries to hurt us at any possible occasion.
She acts more and more like some of those rogue countries. It is highly regretable but not our fault. We simply have to defend ourself. As president Bush stated it so eloguently our liberty is not negociable.

Joe, who is Russia "confronting"? We are the ones confronting Russia by trying to put this shield in its backyard. What if Russia was trying to put a missile defense shield in Mexico ostensibly to protect from Chilean missiles? That's about as ridiculous as this situation is.

The Cold War is over, Russia is not a military threat to Europe, she is not expansionist or spreading communism around the globe anymore. There is no rational way one could consider Russia a "threat" to us or our allies.

We are the ones spoiling for confrontation, it's like our politicians can't believe the Cold War is over, and the "Islamofascist" threat is tough to take very seriously on a military level, so they use the cold war specter of big bad evil Russia to justify more wasteful spending for the benefit of politically connected corporate contractors.

Ike knew what he was talking about when he warned about the dangers of the military industrial complex.

Even if y ou believe this is somehow necessary, a missile defense shield in Europe is not for our defense, it's for Europe's defense. If they want one, they can build it. Or do American taxpayers have a moral obligation to pay for the defense of a a continent that is arguably richer than America? Welfare for the wealthy? Bloody silly, it is.

Billy the Kid,

Considering the amount of current huge US deficits few additional billions are not making a big difference in our "black hole".
Few considerations:
1. The average US tax payer pays less than the European tax payer.
2. This defense shield is also - and MOSTLY - against confrontational Russia. The US just can't say it openly.
3. It is primarely in our defense, so we have to pay for it.
Those in the US, who are against this shield pay in general little or no tax.

Just another useless military-industrial complex project to pad the pockets of defense contractors. I wonder how anyone can talk about necessity of protecting Europe from rocket attacks by North Korea and Iran with a straight face.

If Europe felt vexed by Iranian and North Korean missiles, they could build their own missile defense shield. But of course they don't, because the entire idea is ludicrous on its face. So our government, not content to pour hundreds of billions of our tax dollars down the black hole in Iraq, decides to cajole some "emerging" democracies in eastern Europe who are eager to score points with the US into hosting this boondoggle.

Once again, we the tax payers lose, common sense loses, the only winners are the companies that will get the fat contracts to build this monstrosity.

When will this insanity end? Europe, please just say NO to the empire! It's bankrupting us!

I noticed that there are some quasi-Americans, whose hearts beat for Russia and they like to badmouth their own country.
When did the US blackmail Poland? When?

World powers are gearing up for round two of Cold War. Just waiting for the fight through proxy states to begin again. Three cheers for humankind?

There are 10 million Americans of Polish heritage(the women are exceptionally beautiful)and the real reson the Polish government would agree to such a nonsensical missile plan is because Bush has agreed to completely scrap all visa requirements for the 38 million Poles in Poland and establish a completely free trade zone between our 2 countries. Both of these benefits are good for Poland but I regret Poland having to expose itself to Russian missiles in order to enjoy these benefits.I say abolish the visa requirements without blackmailing Poland.

Joe

This is great news! Naturally the US has to stenghten Poland's air defences to neuteraze Russian treats and blackmail. A lot of Greeks and Serbs will cry on Russia's behalf but one can tell them simply in French "c'est la vie".

I am a bit disappointed in this decision. Poland needs no protection from any rogue states if we maintain good, or at least neutral relations with them. By doing this, I think we will have a target written all over us by the anti-US states in the world as a "staunch US ally", as the Bush administration called us.

Yes, it's good that we have protection from missile attacks, it's good that a powerful army like the US is a strong ally of ours, but I cannot see why the missiles could not have been built elsewhere, because this will spoil the Russo-Polish relations which the new government was trying to improve. I really wish Poland would opt for a somewhat more neutral approach worldwide. There are many state sin the world where these missiles could be built, Albania, Kosovo and Israel and others who worship the States.

At least they could scrap visa requirements for Poles.

A Polish mistake of monumental dimensions. It is
puzzling as to why Poland agrees to war games played by
the neocons and the CIA.The
idea that Poland must be protected from countries such
as Iran and Korea is just
ludicrous.The US still lives
with the memories of the cold
war era and hasn't realised
that the world has moved on.
Poland must understand that
their conivance to US plans
will further allienate Russia
and will create a lot of tensions on the rest of Europe.

"America wants to install 10 interceptor missiles to protect against possible attack by what it calls rogue states, such as Iran and North Korea."

I see. So the North Koreans will be stupid enough to fire a missile westward where it must pass through China, Mongolia, Russia, Poland, Western Europe, the Atlantic ocean before reaching USA ..... instead of firing it across the Pacific where it will reach the US without going pass any country .... please, give me a break!

"Congratulations to Poland ans US.
May this serv as a deterant to any rogue state.
Poland this way shows that once and for all the times when that country was violated and pushed around are truly gone and over.
(ToniUK, 2 February 2008 11:02) "

Don't congratulate the Poles just yet. I think as long as Washington and New York can be secure, the Yankees will not care 2 hoots about making sacrificial lambs of Warsaw and the rest of Poland. Apparently the Czechs are wiser.
