The failing health of this little old man seems to pass the world by without it taking too much notice or care. This little old man just happens to be the Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church and his failing health should concern each and every one of us who claims to call themselves Serbian Orthodox Christians. Apart from being truly one of the most holy of men that I have personally had the honour of meeting many times face to face, Patriarch Pavle represents a Church that is fast failing in its spiritual health as is the very dear old Patriarch in his phyisical strength.

The Serbian Orthodox Church has always been more involved in politics that it should have been as a vital religious body but this has always been due to the circumstances that prevailed. This was more obvious than ever during the communist eras of Tito and also Milosevic. The difference between these two communist dictators was that Tito mocked the Church whilst Milosevic used it to his political gains. Unfortunately our glorious Church had elements within it that were only too ready to allow this use to occur and some of these elements even partook in the political campaigns rallied by the Milosevic camp.

Patriarch Pavle was NOT one of these elements! He never was. He was the man who stood up and condemned the Serbian atrocities against the Bosnian and Kosovar Muslims as he condemned the atrocities committed against the Serbs during the wars of 1991 – 1999. Patriarch Pavle is the man who has lived through hell whilst in Kosovo and has suffered many beatings during this time. When he speaks of Christian value, one should listen and learn about such words as forgiveness. Hey, so now he is old and his health is failing – so what?

Some of those little insignificant elements in our Church that I mentioned being around and partaking of the Milosevic orgy are not only still around but have acquired very high positions within the Church and it is they who will be running the show of the future within the Serbian Orthodox Church. I chose the word show on purpose as what will be seen will have precious little to do with Christian values or even a belief in Christ to begin with. Whilst we still have bastions of true Christian Orthodoxy around the globe in many of our Vladikas and their clergy, they have not got the power to overcome the might of the so-called “Mafia” within the Serbian Orthodox Church and the Holy Synod itself.

As soon as the little old man dies, this Patriarch of such tremendous Christian stature and grace, we will come to realize that he was much more than just that little old man who happened to be the Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church and it is then, I fear, that the political games will really begin – but to the detriment of all true believing Christians within the Serbian Orthodox Church and not to our benefit – So help us God!
