"I strongly believe that Europe will benefit when Turkey is a member of the European Union," Bush added. "It's in the interests of peace that Turkey be admitted into the EU."

I strongly believe that the US will benefit by sticking their nose in where it doesn't belong and it is in the best interest of the US(not peace)to support Turkey.

Now we will see if the EU will grow up and try making a choice that might potentially anger the US, or do as they are told. *Tick tock tick tock*

Cheers to the Non-Aligned Movement.

"U.S. President George W. Bush on Tuesday said he wants Turkey to be admitted to the European Union."

With George Bush's superior knowledge on Europe, its history, demographics, culture and Turkey, I truly hope that the enlargement ministers of the EU ignore this option.

First of all, the country is too massive a task to become a part of the EU, especially now that most of the CEE is currently in the EU (most of them prematurely, apart from Slovenia, Malta, Cyprus, Estonia and arguably Czech Republic, far too soon for their own good or for the good of the EU, if you ask me or many others living in the CEE or in the developed EU). Can you people imagine how much money will have to be pumped into Turkey to get it to European levels? Can you imagine the flood of Turkish migrant workers into the West (Poles and Romanians are already far too numerous, imagine now the Turks!)?

Secondly, it would be the second largest country in the EU (with current demographic growth as is, it will soon overtake Germany), on top of that a strongly religious Muslim one. Thrace is perhaps secular, like Albania or Bosnia, but the massive expanse of land that is Anatolia, differs little from the Middle East, where women are treated like animals, draconian laws exist and little tolerance is seen to anything different to them. How is this in any way compatible with European norms, values and culture?

Thirdly the level of development in this massive expanse of land that is Anatolia is so backward that even the Ukraine, Belarus or Moldova would be a wiser choice for membership than Turkey! Why take this country into the EU anyway when only a tiny portion of its land is actually in Europe while the rest is in Asia (not just physically, but culturally)?

Absolutely no Turkey in the EU, not now, not later!

"I strongly believe that Europe will benefit when Turkey is a member of the European Union," Bush added. "It's in the interests of peace that Turkey be admitted into the EU."

How can it in any way be in the interests of Europe to have Turkey in the EU??? What of this allusion to it being "in the interests of peace"? How will not accepting Turkey into the EU threaten peace? He can make Turkey a part of the USA, but why is he butting into European affairs when it has nothing to do with him?

George W. Bush, please end your presidency and go retire somewhere far away from politics, you have done enough damage and your reputation is already worse than any US president before you!

Bush is dreaming.Every poll
carried out amongst EU states
shows that the ovewhelming
majority is against Turkish
membership.Under the new
treaty each nation's votes
are in accord with the size
of its population.Turkey's
population is predicted to
rise to 100 million by 2050.
Will Germany and France allow
Turkey to enter?Furthermore,
Turkey doesn't belong to
Europe geographically.
Bush wants Turkey into
Europe in order to prevent
the emancipation of EU.
