Joe,

It is true not only for Romania. Even Poland which is a member of EU for much longer then Romania has a similar situation. Unemployment went down because about 2 million young Poles work in GB, Germany, France, Ireland, Italy, Spain and even Greece.

The special charter flights from Warsaw to London (about $90 round trip) allow many of them go to GB just for a weekend.

Joe, if you travel to Chicago, New York, Hartford, Detroit and plenty of other cities on east coast of US you can find hundred of thousand Polish illegal immigrants just trying to get a job.

So EU is not a solution for unemployment and economical boom.

Ida,

I was about to post the same thing. I will just confirm that Romanians are still coming to Serbia to work. I know this for the fact since I live in Negotin and Negotin is situated between Romanian and Bulgarian border. Believe it people or not but Romanians are crossing the border each day looking for some job in Serbia and usually they work in construction or agriculture for much lower price than Serbs. When it comes to salaries, Joe, you should know that Serbian average salary is higher than in Romania.

"According to the mayor the unemployment rate went in 10 years from 12 to 2%."

Actually, Joe, the unemployment is so low because all the able-bodies Romanian workers have left for the EU countries - even abandoning their children to be looked after by grandparents or orphanages. Besides I have heard from a 1/2 Serb-1/2 Hungarian who lives in Serbian near the border that Romanian workers today do come to Serbia to work agriculture! The poverty in Romania is "desperate":

http://www.iht.com/articles/reuters/2007/12/24/europe/OUKWD-UK-ROMANIA-CHILDREN.php

BALACIU, Romania: Desperate parents are fleeing the poverty of Romania's countryside in search of work elsewhere in the European Union, leaving their children behind to be cared for by others.

Since Romania joined the EU at the start of 2007, thousands of children have been left with grandparents, neighbours or local authorities while their parents seek work, often illegally, on Italian construction sites or in Spanish orchards.

"The phenomenon is on the rise since Romania joined the EU, opening doors to free travel across borders in western Europe," said Mariela Neagu who runs the state child protection agency.

Delije,

I read a very interesting article on BBC about the boom-town Timisoara, so close to your relatives in Vojvodina. According to the mayor the unemployment rate went in 10 years from 12 to 2%. There is a big need for manpower and companies of that city try to hire people in nearby towns of Vojvodina. Since the unemployment in Vojvodina is pretty high and the salaries are lower this could just work out fine for your folks in the old country.
What is amazing is that under Tito the living standard in Yougoslavia was much, much higher than in Rumania. Now the opposite is true.

Serbia is geographically in Europe. So how can we lean on China or India? Maybe we can partially lean on Russia though. However, Serbia is surrounded by EU countries or its candidates. Sooner or later we'll be an island in the middle of EU.

I'd rather die on my feet by 10000000000 euros than begging on my knees for Russians to feed me.

bmrusila, nobody wants another north Korea in the world. It'd be even worse to have it in the middle of the Balkans and Europe. Serbs and Albanians are not friends, but a North Korean-like Serbia would be the worst for Serbia and even non-friends like Albanians, believe it or not.
That said, your post has an isolationist tone, much like North Korea's and Cuba's policy. All I did is point out how naive it is to think like that. It is very clear that Serbia would be in a much much worse situation if it was not for hundreds of millions of dollars from the EU. Its that simple. When Serbia decides not to accept any funding from foreign bodies and still do fine then you can start talking about making it on your own. It is still far till then.

P.S You're starting to think 80% realistically. When you start realizing that without the whole of Kosova/o Serbia will still be able to progress ad even at faster rates than now then you'll be thinking realistically.

I would like to see Serbia in the EU but it's an expirememt that is bound to fail, just like Yugoslavia did. After this Kosovo thing is over, Serbia will still prosper with or w/o the EU. Serbia is doing fine now even with this Kosovo situation going on. And after it's over and the dust settels Serbia will boom & still have good relations with the US & the rest. Life goes on I guess & Serbia will prosper. With or without South Kosovo. Serbia must look to it's future & thats Voivodina.

Johny,

You obviously missed the point in my comment. It does not take a genious to realise that my comment did not call for boycotte the economical cooperation with the rest of the world but just not to join EU. You can still have economical relations with the EU even without joining it, you should know that. What was not clear? By independence of the country in economical terms I meant development from its own funds and not from some granted money. So, please next time do not jump to conclusions so quickly. One thing is for sure-Serbia will be never N.Korea. You are either naive to believe that or just malicious in your wishes.

That sounds a lot like north Korea and Cuba. Good luck with that.
You have to be really naive to think that a country, any country can be completely independent. That means stopping all exports, since that will make you dependent on the buyers. Stopping all imports since that will make dependent on the sellers. Stop all the alliances with every country, since that will make dependent politically. Sounds like a great plan. Again good luck.

#1, Mark,

I’m sorry to say it like this but your comment is the joke of the day! You can’t really be serious about wanting Serbia maintain better relations with China and India than with EU and US. Despite the differences between Serbia on the one side and EU and US on the other side regarding the future status of Kosovo(a), the future of Serbia lies with EU. The same opinion are about 70% of the Serb population according to a resent poll. I’m pretty sure that the same opinion have also all other neighbours of Serbia incl. Kosova(o)!

If you think that future status of Kosova(o) is a matter of pride for Serbia proper then for Kosovars (for both Serb and Albanian inhabitants of Kosova(o)) the future status of Kosova(o) is a matter of existence!

Your sentence “It is better to die on your feet than live on your knees” is pretty outdated. This sentence of yours might have been OK in the 18-19th century to express your national pride but mate now we have the 21st century. The situation has changed now. Today Serbs are not surrounded by enemies! They surrounded by friends and neighbours (ready to embrace partnership and friendship with Serbia). When this turbulent time is over then Serbia will be surrounded by friends only!

Don’t forget this buddy: Our nations are bound to live together as partners and friends and not as master and slaves or opponents or even enemies whether some nationalists and extremist in Serbia, Kosova(o), Mecedonia, Bosnia etc. like it or not. Period!!!

Serbia does not need to be part of the EU to prosper and should align itself with the emerging economic powers Russia, India and China.

Serbia would be effectively colonised if it were to accept EU membership and give away Kosovo. It is better to die on your feet than live on your knees.
