I wonder what the numbers in Montenegro are? I know that in 88 or 89 it was 1500 in that republic alone! Now when many people are selling their beachlocated houses for fortunes to the russians and buying luxury cars for their children I belive the rate is even higher. A sure thing is that plastic flower factorys for roadside memorials will never go out of business in Montenegro

Welcome to Serbia!
On many different occasions and with many different taxi drivers
I and my friends have been rudely admonished for daring to ware a seat belt in Serbia.

The driving is often very aggressive - it is a foolish form of machismo.

Many men have an inflated view of their driving skills - often illustrated by speeding, aggressive overtaking, not wearing a seat belt, using mobile phones, driving under the influence of alcohol and not giving sufficient allowance to other drivers.

The amount of dangerous overtaking I have seen is incredible. I anticipate accidents that will occur on various stretches of road and frequently hear my predictions come true. Take for example the three young people who were killed the day after I nearly got pushed off the Belgrade-Novi Sad road by some idiot trying to overtake three abreast. We had a near miss recently on a road we frequently use through someone overtaking into on-coming traffic; I read on B92 just a few weeks ago that a young man was killed doing exactly that on that road.

Recently a friend was killed not wearing a seatbelt.

Another thing I have particularly noticed is the youngsters who don't wear crash helmets. To me, their little heads on top of big bikes look rather silly - it is stupidity not to wear a helmet. How many do you see with their crash helmet hung over their arm - helmets should be on the head, not on the elbow! Inevitably within days of me thinking this I hear that someone has crashed a bike and has died.

The police seem to always be at fixed places - so people put on their seat belts when approaching the check points, and then take them off afterwards! I think the police could enforce the laws more imaginatively and a lot more forcibly.

The road designs are often very poor. Politicians are responsible for ensuring that money is properly invested on improving the roads - they should be pressured and held to account much more on this issue.

I hate to hear of all the unnecessary accidents - I am glad that this topic is being reported.

They must educate the public & enforce tougher laws on drinking & driving & also enforce seatbelt laws. I drove over there many times and their nuts, their to aggresive.

'Some of the gravest injuries come as a consequence of the fact many drivers and passengers still avoid using seatbelts.'

The Serbian media never, ever talks about whether people were wearing seatbelts when an accident occurs. Journalists have responsibility to report on this fact
