"I think the Serbs are extremely sensitive about the bombing of 1999. They like to portray themselves as eternal innocents and victimes. Differing views are hardly tolerated."

Joe,

What is wrong with the Serbs being sensitive about the 1999 bombing? More civilians (Serbs and Kosovo Albanians) got killed that during 9/11 (and the whole world knows how sensitive the Americans are about that event). The bombing is sensitive because it was partly aimed at delibrately destroying civilian facilities (schools, hospitals, and so on) and the military successes were minimal (in addition, it created many people to flee which was solely blamed upon the Serbian army). In addition, illegal weapons were used like depleted uranium rounds and cluster bombs. I am sure that for NATO it was a great opportunity to test some new weapons. Serbs do not have to portrait themselves as angles, but they are also not the devils the Western media tries to portrait them like. I know it is easy for many Americans to come home after work, turn on CNN and see how the mighty US army has used its technology to bomb some place from far away or from way up in the sky. For every killed or wounded GI most of you will feel sad and why can other people and countries not feel the same (are Americans more important or better?). The world would be a nicer place if the US would not be such a bully and maybe it would be not a bad idea to go more back to the US when Serbia and the US established ties. US people from that time would understand Serbia and Serbs much more than present day Americans. Finally with respect to the different view the following: You are with the US or against it. How open-minded is that?

Mark,

Obviously you are an American. You guys got bombed (9/11) by your former Islamic friends while there were also plenty of warning signs around that were ignored by your government. We will not miss the love letters. As far as you comment regarding the fair chances for Serbian forcs to withdraw from Kosovo (or get bombed) the following. The KLA was and is a terrorist organization and every country has the right to fight that on its own soil. Why are Turkey, Pakistan, and Israel (and many others) different from Serbia? Because the US supports these countries because of some interests (and they are not all human rights). This misconception that Serbs want to play the victim is just not true. However, if Serbs do things to protect themselves so they will not be victims then some countries can immediately call them the bad guys. The US people also had a chance to get rid of Bush and co in 2004, but they choose differently so please do not pretend that the US democracy is better than many others. Anyway, even a big and rich country like the US cannot keep paying for all those wars the got themselves into (and not feel the effects somewhere else (education, health care, social services, and so on)). Maybe you should see "Charlie Wilson's War" and just reverse the Soviet Union with the US so you will be prepared for what is to come (the name of that movie is still unknown and it is quite ironic that the role of the Muslims in both movies is actually played by the same group of people (just a few generations difference)). Finally, please read your own words one more time.

"cease their bloodshed but their own egocentric leaders chose to look the other way and thumb their nose at the free world. now i realize that some serbs prefer to play the role of the victim to gain support amongst themselves but they are truly to blame for their own misfortunes and errors. they, through the vehicle of democracy, voted in their leaders and now have to sleep in the bed they layed for themselves."

Replace Serbs with Americans and the prsent day reality is not that much different (egocentric leaders (Bush), thumb their nose at the free world (ignore the UN), play the role of the victim (9/11), truly to blame for their own misfortunes and errors (Iraq), voted in their leaders (Bush), have to sleep in the bed they layed for themselves (fill in yourself)).

I wish you a good 2008 and hopefully you people will find the wisdom to vote for some responsible leader next year otherwise your downfall will be even accelerated (I have not seen many impressive candidates and at least Dick Cheney will not be available).

I agree that breaking ties will be the best because if there is no mutual trust and respect in any relationship it will be doomed to fail no matter what you try (and the effect will be minimal for both countries and so it will not be a loss). Ties between Serbia and Russia are much older and more natural and there are many good ties with other countries that will soon replace the sick man of the world as new super powers. I understand that it is all about interests, but there is still something called genuine friendship and one has to choose that any day above many other things. I am pretty sure that in the next ten generations no Serbian soldier will die while fighting for or along with the US (or NATO or the EU). Serbs will indeed not forget the bombing of Beograd in both 1944 and 1999.

Belgrade was bombed by Anglo-American air forces on April 16 and 17, 1944, which was Orthodox Easter Day. The most important unit that took part was American 15th Air Force, based in Foggia in the south of Italy. This carpet bombing raid was executed by 600 bombers flying at high altitude. Civilian casualties were 1,160, while German military losses were 18.

Bombing of the city was repeated on April 21, April 24, May 18, June 6, July 8, and September 3, 1944.

I do not have to add anything about the 1999 bombing. Do not ever call yourself a friend.

ida,

The US does not need to lure away Serbia's - or any other country's - best and brightest. They are coming volontarely even from Western-Europe and they find it as a great privilege to get in. Did you think about for a moment why they prefer the US and not "democratic" Russia?

Has anybody really wondered
why the Americans have wasted
so much time on the issue of
Kosovo. Is it because they think that the Albanians were
wronged by the Serbs and should be restituted or is it
because they are just looking
for another banana republic

The U.S. lures away many of Serbia's best and brightest and in return bombs and maims Serb children. The U.S. also supported the communist/Tito takeover of Serbia at the end of WWII. Serb civilians were bombed in WWII while Gestapo headquarters in Belgrade was untouched.

Serbs feel betrayed regarding the United States, because of the American treatment of Serbs in the 1990's and their current policy regarding Kosovo. Understandably, it will take time for Serbs to get over these emotions.

Nevertheless bmrusila, I don't think breaking ties with the Americans is the answer. Afterall, we can say the same things about the British, French, and other European countries as well. Serbs have to ask themselves would such behavior help.

Don't get me wrong this doesn't mean I think Serbs should lick their boots, or build statues to Americans anytime soon. However, working with America and the Europeans will only help Serbia in the long run.

What Serbs have to remember is that these people work on interests not friendship, regardless if it's EU, USA, Russia, India, or China.

yeah Nenad, while K-albanians try to kill american citizens ( Fort Dix Plot ) Serbs were always friendly towards the US.

that would change dramatically, if they go on with that criminal project of a greater Albania.

it´s their choice, but...the US are on the way downhill anyway.

the future will be Chinese,Russian and Indian.
