Kostunica is wasting his breathe!!! There is nothing that can be done about Kosovo declaring independance... Russia makes a lot of noise about helping, hinting at military aid... Even if there was a a war and Russia was going to send in the cavalry, whose airspace do you think they will cross to get to Serbia? Hungary? Bulgaria? Greece? Romania? All NATO allies...

Funny to hear serb optimism about republika srpska. That is a territory that has been created by force and by war.

Every former Yugoslav republic (now country) is multi ethnic and will stay that way. Starting from Slovenia, down to Croatia, etc. etc.

RS was created to put an end to the war, not the expansion of Serbia.

Same with Kosovo, the West is granting it independence to end conflict and create stability. Not for greater Albania, as you see it.

Again I say - the EU should talk to Serbia instead of imposing any solution.

Serbia has right on its side and needs to be taken seriously.

not to put down any one particular poster, but -- these postings are really getting tedious, and in my opinion going nowhere, fast. so: i would like to propose an alternative suggestion to this lovely...HATE fest. i would like to propose that students of belgrade (and any of their allies, of course) take to the streets, like in the good ole days, to protest where their govt is trying to lead them. which is back to the hyper-nationalism and chauvanism of the bad old days. i propose that they take to the streets and demand that the regime find ways to make peace with an emerging independent kosovo/a. i propose that serb students (and others) start to build ties w non serb students, both in serbia "proper" and in kosovo. i propose that instead of all of these threats and intensive fear campaigns, that they wage a campaign of peace and mutual understanding! radical, you say? crazy, you cry? i do not think so. just a few years ago, students and other supporters were pouring into the streets, demanding an end to dictatorship and demagoguery (sp)-- and in the most creative ways-- SEE "Guerrilla Radio -- and serbia's underground resistance." (by mathew collin) so yes, now slobo is gone, but i am sorry to say that those tactics are very much alive, and believe me, we in the US know about demagogues! but At least we are on our way to getting rid of ours, whereas in blgd they seem so well entrenched. i ask -- i beg some young people, intellectuals, to be brave, be strong, and try something bold to fight what has taken hold. take the future into your hands... we, the freedom -loving people around the world, will be here to offer support, even guidance.

Just for serb camp here to know that a relevant country in the balkans and one of the newest EU member is supporting Kosova independence and just meet with PM of Kosova Mr.Thaci:

Kalfin stated that there is an important message for the European Union and the international community and he sees clear determination and political will for the implementation of the Ahtisaari plan, and this is very important, in his words. Bulgaria’s Foreign Minister said the next weeks and months would be a proper time for this commitment to the process to be shown on behalf of Kosovo.
He further stressed that up until now Bulgaria has always been committed to the peaceful development of the region and to avoiding provocations, violence and manipulations that would harm the commitment to that policy.
Another important thing that Minister Kalfin stressed was the commitment to those elements of the Ahtisaari plan that organize and insure the democratic society, which is also of high importance.
“Bulgaria would continue providing help and support to Kosovo. We intend to strengthen the bilateral economic relations because I know economy is among the major fields for the future development of Kosovo. Easier and free movement of people is also among the main issues on which we would concentrate in the future”. Ivaylo Kalfin said.
The visit of Minister Kalfin is running under the huge interest on behalf of the local media.

I highly doubt that a US-backed government official (Kostunica) with all of his knowledge of the law would be stating untruthful facts. He is a seasoned attorney as well as a highly regarded official of the Serbian government.

Enough said about Kostunica - the bottom line is that the EU does not own Serbia, nor is Serbia part of the member states - so, there is no right for anyone to "order" or give advice as to what Serbia should do with their land.

The serbian prime minister was particularly critical towards the US, accusing it of defending Albanian interests and violating international law.

"The US is conscientiously sacrificing Serbia's state and national interests as well as life interests of Kosovo Albanians just to make a quasi-state in which NATO would be the final authority body in an independent Kosovo", he told parliamentarians.

here is link:

he can speak about serbian interests, but not about albanians, as he puts it "life" interests. Is it a threat form of making it sound soft?
He still is fixed with the idea of the #11? what is wrong there? Make an offer to be Brussels the final authority, if you don't like NATO. I am sure Albanians will accept it.

Tonyt and Jeff: You have no leg to stand on bringing up moral authority. The 1 million deported people and over 10,000 killed people are crimes Albanians committed against Serbs from 1974 on. Moreover, look at the current treatment of Serbs in Kosovo by the Albanians.

If the Serbs are so lacking moral authority than why is Serbia one of the most diverse countries in Europe and why are there still Albanians living in places like Belgrade or Presevo? Since you like logic, just compare and contrast how Albanians live in Serbia compared to Serbs living in Kosovo.

Furthermore, unilateral independence will not help Kosovo solve its economic and social problems. Kosovo has had almost 9 years of being an international welfare state and in spite of all that aid the unemployment is around 50%.

In addition, I quote the following: "According to the Transparency International, an anti-corruption watchdog based in Berlin, Kosovo under the KLA leadership is among the most corrupt regions in the world today, the fourth in the world right after Cameron, Cambodia and Albania. Sixty seven percent of Kosovo residents have stated they have to pay bribes to get services."

Under no logical circumstance does criminal governance such as what exists in Kosovo meet any standard for a legal secession.

To Serbian posters in here:
Serbia want to give Kosovo just greater autonomy, and want to keep some "red lines".
My question is: Why Serbia do not offer a proposition like Kosovo gets autonomy, and hands over the "red lines" to EU??
Albanians do not trust Serbian gov. and Serbs do not trust Albanian (Kosovo) gov. so best solution is to hand over to EU all "red lines" from both sides.
An Albanians do not get Independence, but in the same time do not have to worry about Belgrade gov.
In the end all will be part of same country in the future, EU and schengen zone. No borders, free movment, and no one will control over each other, but only EU, which you both trust.

It seems curious that legality-obsessed EU pays more attention to the shape of cucumbers than to the fact that EU mission without UN mandate is illegal.

However, it is not by accident or by an oversight. EU is fully aware that aggression on Serbia was illegal, as was Germany's support to Kosovo Albanian terrorists before the war. Dutch parliament actually approved participation in aggression, so Germany and The Netherlands can not hide behind the "NATO made me do it". EUcrats are fully aware that they are on the hook for billions of dollars of damage and reparations. They hope to get away by continuing to support extremists who got them in the tight spot in the first place.

Jeff

pre 16 godina

I fail to see the logic of this resolution that the Serb parliament just passed. The entire world understands Serbia’s desire to keep Kosovo within its boundaries. However to legally set up traps yourself is quite another thing. This resolution is corning Serbia against EU and US and majority of the world.

While no one knows for sure when exactly the independence will be declared the US and EU have made it clear to Serbia that end result will be independence. It may be a day, a week, a month, a year from now but Serbia will never again rule Kosovo. That is the clear message that has been conveying to Serbia.

What surprised me the most is the resolution had met no opposition from the right side. Where is the voice of the reason in this debate? Does anyone care why Serbia was chased out of Kosovo to begin with? Every Serb should ask this question: What gives Serbia the moral authority to rule over Kosovo? Considering that fact that Serbian civic leaders and its generals have been found guilty of committing horrendous war crimes I say Serbia lost its right to even consider ruling over Kosovo.

Keep in mind that like Mr. Kostunica, Mr. Milosevic was democratically elected by the Serbian people. Like Mr. Kostunica he made and lost his fortune in Kosovo. Personally I can’t wait for the Kosovo parliament to declare independence. Kosovo has its own social and economic problems that it must solve. Hopefully independence will bring a speedy resolution to these problems and a future that holds a better prosperity for all its citizens.

lisi,

Northern Kosovo will join Serbia as Republika Srpska will after the devision along ethnic lines starting from Kosovo. If Russia do recognise Abhkasia, South Osethia, Serbia will in that case recognise Republika Srpska and Northern Kosovo. Albanians in Presevo Valley cannot make any partition from Serbia since Albanians make majority in only one municipality of Presevo. In other two municipalities of Medvedja and Bujanovac Serbs make majority. This means if some partitions are about to happen then Kosovo might get only Presevo. Of course the Albanians from other two municipalities are allowed to move to Presevo. However, I doubt that this scenario is likely to take place. As for parallel institutions is absolutelly the same. Albanians may run paralel institutions only in Presevo municiplaity. Anyway I think that Serbs could not care less if the Albanians do not take part in institutions. It may harm only them since they won't get any government money and money from Kosovo is unlikely to reach Presevo Valley. On the other hand Serbia finance and have full control over the North of Kosovo.

And as for resoulution adopted by Serbian government I may say only that it was important to do it and it was god thing to do it. Once again Serbian government showed unified stance on Kosovo issue which is very important because there will be no room for speculations and intrferance from external sources.

I suppose if Abramovic can own Chelsea football club, Putin can own Serbia. He must be delighted that Serbia has voted against an EU presence in Kosovo, which Serbia regards as its own. In other words, Serbia says it wants to join the EU, but has just voted against the EU. With the support of most countries in the world, Kosovo will become independent and will join the EU in its own right. Serbia will remain on the outside, looking in, and Russia will look on joyfully, happy that Serbs will remain a diplomatic headache for the EU whilst costing Russia nothing.

Under no logical circumstance does criminal governance such as what exists in Kosovo meet any standard for a legal secession.

Serbia is finally unified.

Jeff, in your support to Kosovo Albanian extremist cause you are throwing genocide accusations lightly. You are free to support Kosovo Albanian extremist cause, but leave genocide and genocide victims alone.

Calling events in Kosovo "genocide" robs the term of it's true meaning.
It is an insult to the memory of ALL genocide victims all over the world, more than 100 million in 20th century.

Your rhetorics belongs to May 1999 and "100 000 Albanians unaccounted for".
Have you overslept the last 8 years and the events in Kosovo since then, and debunking of all those lies?

I have to remind you that the Serbs were the victims of real genocide and your use of fake genocide as an accusation falls somewhere between Nazi revisionism and The Holocaust denial.

Who is america to say we lost all rights to our own land? Just because they say so right? In Serbia we are really sick of american aggression and constant blackmail on our people!

They will recognize former areas of the Soviet Union which want to join her, if the US and some EU countries go ahead with their illegal and immoral 'greater albania' plan.
