joe to answer your questions:

Few simple questions:
-Who would care about a so-called autonomy when he can have a long deserved independence?

The problem is Serbia will never give you independence nor recognize you. Do you know how it feels for a much smaller and weaker country to have a more powerful neighboring country waiting for the chance to re assimilate it by any means?

-Who could in his right mind consider autonomy from somebody, who notoriously demostrated that he has no scruple to revoke it?

The Milosevic days are over. Serbia transcends the errors of any one politician.

-Who would return to an oppressor, who did nothing for the economic development of that province and who showed so little progress in his own economic development compared to some neighbors

Despite massive subsidies during the Tito years, Kosovo proved to be little better than Albania (Europe’s poorest country)—you people have to make prosperity for yourselves. Serbia is like Germany compared to you, with a powerful and growing economy (a place where microsoft and many other firms build headquarters—bad example ).

My comparisons to the former RSK show what devastating effects a strangled economy, with no legal political recognition has on a so called country—it is not a far stretch. You are in for some harsh realities!

I forgot the great nation of albania defying Russia! I wonder what they will say when Russia decide to cut gas supply to albanians or the rest of Europe?

Ask your self is the US willing to damage its relation to Russia for albanians? No I didn't think so.
(A92, 25 December 2007 21:30)

You talk like its only Russia that sells natural gas!?
There is gas all over the markets to buy it.Russia can cut gas to all Europe, they will buy it elswhere. Russia can keep its gas.
As for Albanians, we dont give a damn about Russia, take it to the bank.

"The Kosovo issue will remain on the UN Security Council agenda, as will the official draft of the Council's presidential statement proposed by Russia," Churkin told Russian reporters at UN Headquarters in New York, and added that NATO and the European Union did not have the authority to settle this issue.

This position cannot be changed. This is a statement that could spell disaster for the continued existance of the UN. CCCC

A92,

Cut the gas supply? With this big bully what Russia is nobody would be surprised. The real surprise would be if during this winter they would not do it somewhere. They themselfes acknowledge that they have a terrible hang up or complex due to their lost status. As a poor revenge they obstruct, provoke or menace. Cooperation of any kind is out of question.
US relations with Russia are at a pretty low point. But knowing the Russians you can be sure that they will make sure that these relations deteriorate further. Why? They always needed a real or imaginary ennemy as a rallying point.

Your comarison with Krajina is so farfetched that it doesn't even merit to go into
explanations.
And finally dear Tesla reading your last two paragraphs you reminded me of "Tokyo Rose" of the Japanese radio during WWII. Tokyo Rose tried to lure the American GI's like a nymph but without any success.

Joe: Foreign policies are not determined by goodwill, but rather by interests. There is more at stake here than Kosovo. The trampling of international law will lead to many difficulties ahead, and that's why Russia is still in play.

"Keep on dreaming with Churkin's approach. Because of their systematic obstruction and provocative policies the Russians"

How is it obstructionist when the Serbs and Russians are offering the Albanians a level of autonomy that they have never seen before? Therefore from a logical standpoint, it is the Albanians, the EU and US that are being obstructionist by demanding the EXTREME position which benefits one side 100% and the other side 0%.

For this reason, justice will prevail, and the only real losers will be the Albanians by prolonging their state of limbo, because Serbia can wait this thing out much longer than can the Albanians.

Autonomy is the best solution for the prosperity of Kosovo, because Independence is off the table, and can never happen legally, as long as the UN exists that is.

The ALbanians may argue that they enjoy defacto independence now and it is impossible to reintegrate back into Serbia. This is not correct as we have seen the Krajina Serbs reintegrate back into Croatia quite smoothly, despite strained relations and a bitter war.

The Krajina Serbs and Albanians have one thing in common which ultimately defeats their proclamations of independence: the UN saying otherwise.

Before the fall of the Krajina, this unregocnition led to extremely low levels of morale, economic prospects, and emmigration where the best and brightest fled the RSK. By 1995, the "republic" was in shambles and was easy pickings for the Croatian Army. That war was over before it had even begun.

Likewise the ALbanians are doing the same things to themselves by demanding an all or nothing solution. Within a few years, they too will be easy pickings, and will bemoan the chance that is presented to them now since what they get in a few years, will be substantially less than what is offered now.

Wake up Albanians and think of your children! The balkans have seen enough arrogance and violence.

Look russia, albanians or this and that. The US is going to continue to do what it must. That is have democratic influence in regions. Let it go and then it will find itself in the same situation again.

Nick Klinsman,

Keep on dreaming with Churkin's approach. Because of their systematic obstruction and provocative policies the Russians lost all goodwill by Western powers and all their proposals will be desregarded in the future. Since the EU people realized that no constructive approach of any kind is possible with them all important thinks will be done outside the UN. Already for a long time the UN was nothing else than this costly, wastful, useless thing or "machin" to use de Gaulle's expression. In the future - because of Russia - it will be even more irrelevant. Irrelevance and impotence was already well illustrated in the case of Irak.

Churkin's approach is the best one for regional stability, and more and more EU people are starting to realize it. Unilateral declarations are meaningless in the long run.

The U.S. cannot backpedal on their earlier stance of Kosovo independence because it makes them look inept. For that reason, we can expect the EU and Russia to become more engaged in this process. That way the problem gets solved and the U.S. pride and foreign policy doesn't get damaged. In other words, win-win for everybody.

The UN was formed to have member nations assist with conflicting bodies. As the UNMIK is a functioning government (for lack of better terms) in KosovO, there is no reason why the UN should not be able to come to a solution, particularly since Russia's veto is a definite potential.

Sorry to disappoint you, US/EU.
