"Nikolic has absolutely nothing to lose in this election. He is not responsible for Kosovo's loss"

- depends upon your viewpoint regarding lost or not?

Tadic might put the US and a "few" EU out of place and actually do like I said much, much more then you suggest. Tadic is after all the President and like any self-respecting President they have the greatest responsibility to uphold the States Sovereignity in all right & lawful ways. Even potential US Presidential candidates are only too aware of their obligations;

"As president, I will never hesitate to use force to protect Americans or to defend our territory and our vital interests. We cannot negotiate with individual terrorists; they must be hunted down and captured or killed."

"the US and EU have no-one but themselves to blame if the democratic government that was EU focused collapsed."

You're right Princip, but in the end, it's the Serbs that will be casting the votes. Nikolic has absolutely nothing to lose in this election. He is not responsible for Kosovo's loss, he's head of the largest party in Serbia, and he will undoubtedly gain from a surge in protest votes against the sitting government.

Could all of this have been avoided? Absolutely. While the EU is certainly eager to work with someone like Tadic, the US couldn't care less. They have made it plainly clear they are more than willing to accept a pro-American regime in Pristina at the expense of a tacitly Western-leaning government in Belgrade.

With all of this in mind, the EU would be wise to not only hold off on Kosovo until after the election, but make it plainly clear that Kosovo's transition will long and gradual - enough time to re-normalize relations with Belgrade and strengthen the democratic parties further enough where a SRS scare is no longer an issue.

Mike,

the US and EU have no-one but themselves to blame if the democratic government that was EU focused collapsed. While you say this will be helpful for them it on the contrary is likely to lead the exact opposite of what they stated their "we now best" attitude will bring - greater instability and a total re-alignment of Serbian populace against anything to do with an illegal secessionist supporting technocratic hierarchy that ignores even the EU general public for their own gain.

It will be a sad day for international law and the start of the complete demise of the UN if this folly is continually pushed to its end.

One can only imagine that the US and the "few" EU states actually would like it if world war three broke out!

Tadic needs to do a damn sight more then what you suggest - if he is to have any chance of re-election given the way the US and the "few" Eu states have dealt the cards against him!

The Dominoes are in place - its up to the US and a "few" EU states if they want to start the whole lot falling !

We all know these elections and Kosovo are closely linked. While the West would like to see a DS led government, they would have little to no problem is a SRS-DSS coalition was formed, giving them all the reasons necessary to speed up the Kosovo process.

Tadic et al should use as much time as needed now to campaign on greater EU cooperation, further integration, and a negotiated settlement on the Kosovo issue. The SRS already has the advantage of gaining "protest" votes.
