mr. o'doherty,
how about we raise the UK flag up over dublin again? are you okay w/that since you're firmly onboard to deny others?

Kosova is a unique case as it is administered by the UN and there more than 16.000 NATO troops there. Serbia has lost its control over Kosova in a war. Can't you get it?
(EA, 10 December 2007 20:35)

Really, will you support the independence of the Basque and the right to self determination of the Bosnian Serbs, Palestinians, Tibetans, Kurds, Tamils etc.

What happened in the Basque is absolutely identical to what happened in Kosmet but what happend in Kosmet was on a much, much smaller scale yet they reached an agreement. As I say to you again, will the new state of Kosovo(if you ever get it) support the Basque or indeed the Palestinians and Bosnian Serbs?

The most surprising thing of this situation is the role UN and UE are assuming. If a new state is to be created it will be done under the legitimiacy of this organisations, when never had it been their objective to create new states, but to make States get closer! What soverignity for Kosovars when the State will be created by other countries or organisations?

Spanish, you're being disingenuous to suggest that Euskadi - the Basque Country - was never oppressed. It was bombed by the Luftwaffe at Franco's inception then subjected to brutal fascist rule from Madrid for 40 years, with even the use of the ancient Basque language outlawed. And this is only one example of why the absurd Milliband's "sui generis" argument is unsustainable.

And so it begins... the PRECEDENT, which will lead to conflicts all over the globe. Thanks to the EU and USA. Its going to be a busy time for UN peace keepers all over the globe.

Hey, I thought Kosovo was a unique case. Boy I war duped! Ha ha, Serbias arms manufacturing sector should be booming soon. Good luck to all those inspiring independence around the world.

EA,

You are so selfish! So you want independece for yourself but are afraid to support Basque!

Then let's have UN forces in Basque, wait 8 years, promise them independence, let's have fake negotiations... and then let's do the Kosovo option!

You are so selfish!

dim-tuc,

yes - your right! let's split the world's countries up - and then let's do it further - and then again!!! Let's splinter them beyond recognition - if a few Italians settle in France - let them put up barbed wire and print their own money.

Excellent! - let's do that! Let's destroy all international laws, agreements and treaties - let's destroy THE VERY FABRIC OF CIVILITY...why...???

Personally, I'd like to see about a thousand "countries" created out of the racist, bullying rump that is called America. See how they like it!

Be happy you have your own country already (such as it is!), it's called albania.

Well i guess the cat is out of the bag. EU is promoting the independence of Kosovo but will tell others they are not unique and pretend not to listen to the drums of distress. Please US help us.

However, our Constutution is very clear. Spain will remain one.

We have a constitution too. As well as UN recognishion. If they decide to proclaim independence and Russia chooses to recognise whats to stop them based on the Kosovo model? Especially since few selfish EU countries didnt listen to them. CCCC

To compare the Basque country situation with Kosovo is absolutely unacceptable.

First, the Basque country is nowadays one of the richest regions in Spain. On the contrary, Kosovo was one of the poorest regions in Yugoslavia.

Second, the Basque country enjoys a very high level of de-centralisation, managing health, education, police, and media with no interference from the central government.

Third, less than 50 per cent of the Basque population votes for nationalist parties. The other half of the population define themselves as centralist being just happy with the level of decentralisation they got so far.

Fourth, Spain is a EU member for over 20 years now. We erased borders with France and Portugal long ago and now some people want to build artifitial borders between us.

Fith, the Basque country has never suffered any represion from Spain. People are free to vote even for parties supporting terrorist groups such as ETA (mafia and not ideals are behind this).

Believe me...All this about the Basque country are just personal aspirations of some politicians that want to see the title "Minister" in their business cards. I am sure they will use any example like Kosovo or Montenegro in order to manipulate people and to push for a referendum.

However, our Constutution is very clear. Spain will remain one.

Viva España!

Of course it's positive, and i wish you every luck you need on your way of creating a Basque state, which by the way should hapened long time ago. Basque language is one of the oldest in Europe(same as Albanian), so if nothing else we deserve right of self-determination.

Please forward this article to British Foreign Secretary David Miliband who obviously has no clue as to what is brewing in his own backyard.

Well, I guess 2008 will be full of surprise. It goes like this:

Kosovo,
Abhasia & Osetia,
Republika Srpska
Kurds in Turkey
Basque
Scotland (maybe),and so on ______________(add the country)

That is how Kosovo is unique case, ha,aha,ha. I toast to that! :)))))))
Certain EU politicans are really trying to underestimate peoples inteligence by presenting Kosovo as a unique case.

Well I guess is just what goes around comes around

Not surprising the Basque are watching developments in Kosmet very closely making Madrid very nervous. If Kosmet gains independence we can expect (judging from this Basque official) a knock on or precedent to other regions with similar problems to Kosmet. This statement makes complete rubbish to the British & US view that Kosmet's case is a 'sui generis'. You can see why Spain is opposed to this madness.

DimTuc

pre 16 godina

Yes! Kosova, Basque country, Scotland! Let's keep the ball rolling - Kurdistan, Palestine, Chechnya.

We don't need states still based on the medieval idea of the ruler and the ruled. All the more reason to support Kosova independence.

(Despite the legalisitc mumbo jumbo often heard in comments here, be assured my comment is entirely serious)
