in a way i do agree that the odds were against blg's side from the get go -- but not because the ethnics albanians refuse to compromise. it is absolutely because of what happened in the 90s (horrors from blgd, w out precedent) for which there is STIll no remorse, much less compensation. basically anyone who understood the situation, by 99, including serbs (frnds/acquaintances of mine) knew that kosovo/a was "lost" and said so, clearly, at that time. the formal recognition of K's independence is in many respects just a necessary formality.

the problem is, as so many others have explained: until these basic political issues are resolved, common people are stuck, as in a time warp -- and only corrupt, nationalist politicians and other criminals make out like bandits (which most of them are.) can anyone even imagine how inter-cooperation in the balkans could transform the former yugoslavia into a place w promise, not just battle scars..

This link http://www.metimes.com/Security/2007/11/30/outside_view_kosovo_eyes_independence/7fd1/ summarizes the meaning of "essential autonomy" offer. It starts with big words like Serbia is sacrificing everything and everything and yadda, yadda, yadda. Somewhere in the middle of the article, you read,just like you would read in the fine print for a life insurance contract;

"Belgrade should preserve its "exclusive rights" in foreign and defense policies, and the protection of the state border. He(Jeremic) also said the Serbian police should stay in the province, which would be fully demilitarized.".

Get it? Serbian police should stay in the province which should be fully demilitarized.
And the 1999 will repeat again.

No news there. Anyway we already have a conclusion and a solution: independence. The Troika and the "negotiations" were the last thing standing in our way.

'Serbia's alliance on Russia, has backfired big time!'

Nah, it didnt backfire. As you know the dice was loaded against Serbia with or without Russia. This is one of Judah's exaggerations.

'The Troika and the "negotiations" were the last thing standing in our way'.

Yes, I agree at the implication. The negotiation process was a complete joke. When one side wasnt willing to negotiatiate at all it was pointless.

To my mind whichever side refuses to negotiate should have been punished. That by the way, was my view in the past vis-a-vis Serbian policy and it remains my view today when the Kosovo Albanian delegation are clearly to blame for the failure of negotiations.

... also a number of british politicians including Gordon Brown and David Cameron, have expressed their full support for supervised independence of Kosovo, and have offer to send more troops if needed, which is a direct warning to Serbia to keep its hands off Kosovo!

Serbia's alliance on Russia, has backfired big time! Now more EU countries are willing to recognize Kosovo than few months ago.
