The serbian team here seems to me a professionall team (paid by belgrade) not serbian common citizens, they are not capable of nothing except repeat and repeat the same propaganda phrases all dismissed by facts.
"Serbia have the right of auto defense", Serbia dont can claim sovereignty on foreign lands like a right because this is good for its elite viced on abuse their neighbours for their own good. The international right was very damaged when the serbian army invaded croatia bosnia and so on for grant serbian sovereignty on lands of the former ghost state yougoslavia and now a tale (how many battles was ocourred on past in serbian lands? this permit italia by example invade serbia because roman legions had there some headquarters?) some churches serbians and no serbians and twisted interpretation of a document is not sufficient for justify the take of kosova of its population, no more serbians clean ups.
Bosnia have the right of defend its land from serbia minority, croatia have right of fight for slavonia that serbia took over, hungary have right of defend their people from serbians. serbia made genocide and mass rape recently and now are gain eu status like payment, this is not sufficient?

Miri,

There are at least two ways Kosovo can achieve independence: a negotiated way, which will not be without its pitfalls and hardships, and a forced through way in which certain states that are interested in your independence for their own political ends, push a resolution.

In the grand scheme of things, your drive for independence, and Serbia's insistance that Kosovo, as the cradle of their civilization, needs to be part of Serbia, is meaningless to international arbiters. It has moved far beyond a local concern into Power Politics and historical distortions by self-proclaimed "experts" on the region. My issue therefore is in the way key international players have taken the Kosovo issue and shaped it to fit their own political interests and both Washington and Moscow are prime culprits in this.

I have suggested numerous times here that a possible way forward would be to grant independence to Kosovo, but make the newly recognized country a confederation of two regional parts, similar to Bosnia. The Serbs control their own local affairs, the Albanians theirs, and the EU acts an the executive in charge. There are plenty of us out there who are Serb sympathizers but are looking for constructive ways forward. What I cannot accept are the policy statements coming out of Washington that make no effort to hide their own deterministic attempt at getting an independent, pro-American, Kosovo, even if it means jeopardizing democratic stability in Serbia. Such moves are not only dangerous, they are foolhardy. This is my reason behind me truly believing American foriegn policy continues to act as if the Cold War were still going on, even though we have moved away from American unipolarism. If such were still the case, Kosovo would have been independent, sans Ahtisaari Proposal, Russia would have been put in its place, and Serbia would have had to suck it up. As we can see, none of this has happened.

The only inevitable and predictable statemnt coming from Thaci will be "we have assurances and must just wait but they have promised" - he will suddenly say March/April (probably use Serbian Presidential elections as an excuse). the US-officials know very well that they are in the danger of decreasing their influence accidentally by recognizing a toy-republic on the territory of a ( already ) recognized international state, what would weaken american moral integrity at worst, by sidestepping the principles that are being seen as the fundamental basis of international law. so, if the US should make that mistake, they could quite easily isolate themselves, if other do not follow. and still, I wouldn´t bet on so many european countries to recognize a fictitious state without the characeristics of a real state.

let´s see, the US might be just bluffing.

they have much to lose. let´s see whether they will risk it for their "friends"...

You know Mike, you have tried hard to be impartial in these discussions and that is a good thing. I strongly support having a balanced position but as a teacher you should know that "Ring around the roses", where everyone is a winner, works until kindergarden. After that, there are winners and losers. Serbia is going to loose Kosovo and that's that, with or without US support. We have been fighting for independence for a century and finally we got noticed. For those that believe that we are asking for it just because US is supporting us, it's like putting the cart ahead of the horse. In other words, if not now, someone would notice in the next decade or so.

Well I just hope that things don't work out for Burns as far as Russia and Serbia are concerned. Just listen to the guy - he hasn't seen enough compromise from Serbia?!! What compromise have we seen from the Albanian side? But this rhetoric isn't a surprise for Burns is the strongest supporter of Kosovo's independence in the State Department today.

“Over the last year and a half, we have not seen the Serbian government’s willingness to do so,” concluded Burns.

What Burns really means is Serbia's unwillingness to roll over and play dead. But then again, I can understand the frustration of Burns and other State Department officials. Country after country has been challenging American geostrategic hegemony for the past number of years - even those countries that are on Washington's annual payroll.

The Cold War is gone. Welcome to multipolarity. America has a strong voice in the world, but it is no longer the only voice. America has a solution, but it is not the only solution.

What a total lie! What he means is Serbia are not willing to give up its sovereignity - and neither would any other Soverign state.

Tough luck Mr Burns the US have a choice do they accept responsibility and go down in history as the destroyer of the UN for the flagrant abuse of the UN in disavowling itself of the obligations the US has signed upto in UN resolution 1244 and in so doing bring about greater instability to the world at large ?

Or do they do the sensible and rational thing and step back and analyse what they are so "dumya" to do amd comprehend the inevitable dangers of such folly before enacting them upon the world ?

"Why should the Albanians make do with autonomy when George W. Bush had already promised them their own state?""

However, it is not US territory and thus it is a false promise and Bush and Burns know that can not do so legally and as such this is immediatly seen as a continuation of NATO agression if even one NATO state attempts to recognise then they immediatly have acted in a violent nature - Serbia will have every right to react in any way it can to protect its sovereignity. Thus I very much doubt there will be any such illegal declaration come the 11th Decemeber. In this time Serbia will rdouble its diplomatic efforts and call for the inevitable and legal solution - Autonomy.
