Top Khmer Rouge leader detained

In April 1975, the Khmer Rouge captured Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. The population is immediately deported to the countryside. And so begins a veritable genocide that eventually will only be stopped with the Vietnamese invasion of early 1979.

The death toll is from 400 000 to 900 000 summary executions, and 700 000 to 1 200 000 death by deprivation and abuse. The total is from 1 to 2 million deaths in a population of 7 million.

The same Vietnamese that the U.S. was fighting actually stopped the genocide.
