One of the main factors behind the high number of overweight people is poverty, which forces people to eat foods with more flour, potatoes, meat and other fatty foods.

Shouldn't Kosova and parts of Africa have the HIGHEST OBESE LEVEL? If not, than is Serbia full of poverty?

I think it is age related, with those under 35-40 being average or slim, while the middle aged and elderly, especially women who've had children, are quite plump.

Given that Serbia has an aging population - with many of the young adults having left the country - it will make it seem as if Serbs are overweight when it really is only the older people that way which is common and natural to the Balkans and many other parts of the world.

I would agree that there is compelling evidence of a link between poverty and obesity. The lowest-quality food is the cheapest, and one doesn't have to consume a large quantity of it to put on weight. Anyone living in the US (as I do) who watches TV will immediately notice that many fast food ads target consumers (very often Blacks and Hispanics) who are widely believed to be less fortunate (economically speaking). The other thing is that people living below the poverty line are less likely to be well-educated (no suprise there), and therefore more likely to be ignorant of the need for good nutrition and regular exercise. Furthermore, folks in this socio-economic stratum are commonly depressed about their circumstances, and often turn to fatty foods, sugar, alcohol, nicotine, garbage on TV, etc. to escape from their unhappy lives. Getting up off the couch to head to the store for healthy ingredients (which they may not even be able to afford), taking the time to prepare a healthy meal (which they may not even know how to do), then heading outside for a three-mile jog are probably not high on their list of priorities.

I think that Serbs in general are slim people. However, I must emphisaze that overwight or obesety has nothing to do with poverty, on the contrary. I do not know do ministry of health have a real numbers or just estimation since I don't trust them at all. Minister could make us a favour and resign on his post. After that report from two days ago on situation in institutions for disabled people our minister of health expressed high level of incapability in running that ministry. His obligation was to know this facts and handle them properly in order to improve the actaul situation. However, minister Milosavljevic failed and how can I trust this man in his future actions. If he is going to run the national strategy in prevention against obesety and malignancy as he did with disability then we are in trouble.

You notice obesity most when you see very overweight youngsters. I have been here for some time and the only time I saw this in Belgrade was at the airport with a big group of diaspora visiting from San Diego. Most people in Serbia cannot afford to buy enough junk food to make them fat ! Also in neighbouring countries, in Romania (poor) people are thin and in Slovenia (rich) people are somewaht plump. In Catez (big water park in Slovenia) you will hardly see a thin person, in Budva you will struggle to find a fat one.

Poverty?
Is that the cause of fat people in the west as well, whereas the malaisians are slim due to their wealth?

Please B92 show a little respect to the noble Serb nation.

Maybe by Wallace Simpson's Vogue standards! No report can convince me of this.

While there are obviously overweight people in Serbia, the vast majority are really slim. It's noticable when you visit from the UK where there really is a problem.

This report is about as convincing as hearing that only 1 in 5 Americans have white teeth!
