Serbs are not getting it. We're not redrawing anything, that is why we don't need the UN. Everything is already drawn for us, we just declare ourselves separate from Serbia. If the most important countries in the world recognize us then it is a done deal; meanwhile Serbia and Russia can act like there had been no change and wave the 1244 resolution as their bible. We can live with that too; we can live with the fact that Russia, Serbia and China will never recognize us, just as long the big western powers do recognize us one by one. For that you don't need the UN. Once that happens then Serbs can tell us we're like Cyprus, you don't exist, etc. etc. The point is we do not really care if these countries (Russia, Serbia), who have always worked against the Albanians throughout history, recognize us or not. We want out of their sphere influence anyway and if they want to ignore our existence then better for. We want to be integrated with the West not Russia, China or Serbia. The path for integration with the west certainly doesn't pass through Belgrade, China or Moscow.

There should be fair negotiations.

Not: if there is no agreement, we go the Albaneze way!

If these are the American manners can I negotiate with them about my debts :)

We talk about the amount of money I have to pay back. But if we don't agree, I will have to pay nothing.

Good joke, US!

But hey, turmmoil will spread to Bosnia and Macedonia. So NO ONE is gaining from this!!

Dragan:
"Northern Cyprus is only recognized by Turkey, and is still legally a part of Cyprus. The Cyprus Greeks still legally own the land, and they are waiting for the right time to take it back."

You even slander your friends, the Greek Cypriots. No Greek Cypriot - except the local equivalents of Seselj/Kostunica of course - will be happy to hear you say all the land "belongs to the Greek Cypriots" and they're "going to take it back."

We can argue over the rights and wrongs of it (and there is a lot of wring on both sides), but the official Cyprus government government view is that all of Cyprus belongs to Cyprus, not to "the Greek Cypriots." The Cyprus government is the legally recognised one, and it is composed of Greek Cypriots, but it is not recognised as a Greek Cypriot state. It understands that there will never be a united island until negotiations bridge the gaps between the two communities, to set up a bi-communal, bi-zonal united state composed of a Greek Cypriot entity and a Turkish Cypriot entity. Both sides officially agree on this. The differences are over issues of how much territory for each of the two entities, and the extent of refugee return in the immediate future.

The UN Annan Plan offered a bi-communal, bi-zonal state composed of a Greek Cypriot state and a Turkish Cypriot state united in some kind of half federal, half confederal central state. The Turkish Cypriot regime of Denktash - their equivalent of Seselj - rejected this, because they want an independent Turkish Cypriot state (the problem being that before mutual ethnic cleansing, the current borders dd not represent where Greeks and Turks lived). However, the Turkish Cpriot people overwhelingly rejected Denktash/Seselj, and voted strongly for the plan. Unfortunately, too many Greeks came under the influence of their own Seselj's, and rejected the plan. The main reason was that not all refugees could return in the immediate future, tough about half ofthem could.

The Annan Plan looks like a pretty good model to me for independent Kosova, composed of a large Albanian entity and a small Serb entity (consisting both of north of the Ibar and the smaller enclaves) united under one federal or confederal government. Unlike the Cyprus plan, no question about refugees - all must be able to return, and noone is arguing against that anyway.

Everyone happy, except the Serbian Radical Party and the ANA. Even Kostunica,if he were smart enough, could try to claim it as a victory for compromise, for ensuring a better deal for the minority. The Albanians would have their independence.

Kosovo is independent already. Everyone knows that, even Serbs. All what's going on now is a dragging of recognition because mafia-bosses-politicians of Belgrade know that their justifications for staying in power come to an end as soon as "gosts" and "fantasms" they "fight against" dissapear. People of Serbia still can not understand what has been going on in the last 15 years and how they have been used unscrupusly by their own leaders for simple reasons such as Hard Cash...and more human lives go wasted year after year.

Kosova's 'Treaty of Friendship' was a very big step to stop the circle of violence and madness not only between Serbs and Albanians, but between all nations in the Balkans.

Russia is geographically and practically too far to give any real solutions to this problem. Their concerns will be noted in the minutes and the world will go on.

Teni,

That's fine, you can declare you are Mother Theresa if you like also. Guess what? If there is to be a redrawing of borders it has to go through the UN. Otherwise your declarations, and unilateral recognition by some countries, means nothing.
What will happen with unilateral recognition is exactly what you have in northern Cyprus. Northern Cyprus is only recognized by Turkey, and is still legally a part of Cyprus. The Cyprus Greeks still legally own the land, and they are waiting for the right time to take it back. And take it back they will.
Serbia can do the same. Even if the US recognizes your 'greater albania', Serbia will always legally own the land and bide their time to take it back. And take it back they will.
It took almost 500 years to free ourselves from the Turks. I don't think it will take that long to take back Kosovo.
Cheers!

The Albanians say they can afford to wait but there's no point in waiting for something that will never come. Still, go ahead and wait. We hold the title deed to our land and will never relinquish it. As you yourselves have so often said, time is on the side of Serbia.

Ratko: You can keep your Russian backing. We'll settle for Kosova. The Russians cannot do anything anymore to prevent Kosova from going its own way. They will block SC recognition but as long as the US and the biggies in the EU recognize Kosova we can afford to wait. There will be hard times ahead for Kosova and the Albanians, that's true and we know that, but at least we'll be rid of Serb rule. That alone more than makes up for any hardships.

This will eventually be seen as a positive settlement and a fair agreement. Russia is already publisicing it as a good precident. CCCC
