Macedonia rejects UN proposal in "name dispute"

Macedonia is a broader geographic region, which is found in four countries, including the subject republic. Simply calling this country "Republic of Macedonia" is misleading, and implies territorial ambitions to all of geographic Macedonia. The ethnic group is free to call itself "Macedonian", but legally, they do not have a right to appropriate a name that belongs to three other countries (the largest portion being in Greece). Sort of qualifyer is needed (e.g. Upper Macedonia, New Macedonia, or Vardar Macedonia, etc).

There is more to the issue than just the name. What if the Canadian province of Quebec decided to secede from Canada and call itself The Republic of New York and in doing so it decided to use the Statue of Liberty on its flag and other cultural items and claim Alexander Hamilton and Franklin D. Roosevelt as part of its cultural heritage. I think the US would have a problem with that. I don't think a country has a right to call itself whatever it wants when it tramples on another's cultural and historical heritage and has irredentist connotations. FYROM is very wrong in this issue and is playing the victim well. These kind of revisionist actions should not be tolerated by any country in the world.
