YKYB- go to the link, its a BBC article. Mafia in Italy. Also there are crimes not reported in every country. But, this in Serbia isn't murder as that would be hard to just sweep under the rug... I live in Chicago and I feel MUCH MUCH safer in Belgrade or any village than I feel when I am walking around Chicago at night. I won't even drive on the south side when it is dark.

The most stupid thing about discussions is that people, depending on their ethnicity, have such polarized and opposing views that whenever a murder or theft or case of arson happens someone, whether perpetrated by Serb or Albanian, someone will always try to rub it in: I told you the Serbs/Albanians are criminals, they don't deserve independence or they don't deserve to keep Kosova etc etc etc. It's highly cynical and immoral guys. Crimes happen all over the world and a crime like the one described in this article is simply a tragic event. Leave it at that out of respect for the dead if nothing else.

Public statistics is one thing, actual statistics that only god knows is another. There may be crimes that are not reported, which alter true statistics.

If there is going to be crime, then it should be organized so that no one gets hurt nor traumatized.

8 out of 10 in Italy? If it's that high then the government should legalise it and call it an insurance policy!

Correct David and Adam. Me and my children feel in Belgrade much safer then in Amsterdam where we are from. In the night as a woman on the street is a danger in the Netherlands, a pleasure in Belgrade. Sorry for the Albanians posting here such a negative view, it shows they were never in Belgrade.

KS, I can assure you that Serbia is extremely safe, Belgrade as a large European city is especially safe. You are wrong.

I'm originally from Scotland and have lived elsewhere in the UK. I feel safer in Belgrade walking the streets late at night or any other time of the day than when in the UK.

Guys,

let me tell you that Serbia compared to London is a kinder garden.... London has to be the most dangerous place on this planet.

As a Londoner who has lived and worked in several Western European countries, I can confirm that the level of personal security one enjoys in Serbia is better than any of them. Ask ANY westerner here and you will get the same response.

KS, yeah in the Kosovo region of Serbia it is not safe. But opposed to America, Scotland, etc. Serbia has MUCH less violent crimes. Perhaps petty crimes may be a little higher.. but murder, assault, rape, etc is much lower.

Go there and see the US travel information for Serbia. Crime is at same level as in most european cities. If you look at actual rates, Serbia is well below them. Organized crime may be higher... but hey, in Italy, what did they say... 8 out of 10 shops pay hush money to the mafia. Serbia not even close to that. KS, you should leave Serbs alone and work on bettering the Albanian people because they need much more help. Please see the travel advisory on the link above for Kosovo.

Are you guys posting on everything? People get killed everywhere EVERY DAY. Serbia is safer than most Western Countries, yet you guys post here trying to make it seem like no one is killed anywhere else in the world.

Serbia is MOST DEFINITELY not safer than "other western countries," I'm not sure where you're living.
