"RFE/RL: Some experts say that Russia is trying to use the Kosovo issue to show off its new power vis-a-vis the United States. What are Russia's geostrategic, economic, or even emotional interests in the Balkans?

O'Brian: I think it is always hard to sort out what it is. Every Balkan negotiation, except maybe Dayton, has had the same pattern. At some point, the Serbs say they will compromise no more -- whether they are right or wrong they simply refuse to move. The West, broadly speaking, tries to mover further. The Russians say privately, "we don't agree with the Serbs, but don't make us decide against them publicly." And the solution is always the same -- it's to come up with a way forward where the Russians can criticize, but aren't forced to say "no" or to say "yes" in a public way."

Sure, Putin should stay home and exercise PATIENCE.

DimTuc,

Interesting point. Holland gained independence by a TREATY with Spain.
If Serbia wants to grant Kosovo independence that is fine with me. If not... then it has to stay a province of Serbia.

My point is: why international intervention for Kosovo and not for Tibet and Kurdistan.

Kosovo would be nowhere with NATO. So let's then intervene for Tibet (located in COMMUNIST DICTATORSHIP China) now!

Change international law, and then make us of it. That is fine! But no exception for Kosovo!
So go work on new international laws. Probably I even support you (and I am serieus about that).

The world is much bigger then Kosovo. Kosovo is just a tiny piece of the planet!

It goes both ways. The Kosovo Albanians advocate independence against international law, but they stand behind some law that apparently claims that it will not set a precedent.

KS

Ron I didn't say that. I said B92 is turning into CC because of such comments, in other words, because of the commenter's.

"The deal was autonomy (1244). If you want independence: fine. But hey, there is such thing as international law. "

Don't try to change the subject. Answer me this, why are all serb posters trying to keep Kosova responsible for what the IC does?

DimTuc

Ron:
"For once and for all and forever:
Why should Kosovo be granted something Tibet and Basque are not?"

For once and for all Ron: Yes, these other people should have the right to independence too, and let me also add Palestine, Kurdistan, Kashmir and quite a few others, it will be the onlyend to decades-on-end of bloodshed, and similar numbers of decades into the future.

Your broken record of such examples is not some "threat" to my support for Kosovar independence, but an encouragement to it. I note with some pleasure the recent upsurge of struggle among both Basques and Kurds, and I hope it has smething to do with impending independence for Kosova.

And what's your problem with all this? Still can't get over the fact that Holland lost Indonesia, when the natives there revolted against the netherlands' "sovereignty and territorial integrity" and acted "illegally" b demanding independence? Well, get over it. Maybe you should petition your government to pack up and return itself to Spain, against whose rule you revolted and broke up her "sovereignty", which was then based on pre-1648 "international law".

Ron

KS,

Well, KS, to be honest you make me laugh (and not B92).

The deal was autonomy (1244). If you want independence: fine. But hey, there is such thing as international law.

Look at Sudan / South Sudan. There will be a referendum on independence. Great!

Look at China: there is no referendum in Tibet.

You are not alone.
Get a life and accept you are part of Serbia. Look so many Dutch people live in Belgium and Northern France!

it must be like a slap into the face... for the other european states.

someone like Mr.Putin, a politician certainly not known for being a soft-liner...

is telling them what they should know for themselves...

interesting.

they won´t be that stupid, I guess.

even if it is only in your own interest, as long as it serves the interest of international peace ( law ), so be it.

For once and for all and forever:

Why should Kosovo be granted something Tibet and Basque are not?
Why no UN intervention there?
(Ron, 26. October 2007 17:48)

Ron why are you trying to hold Kosova responsible or questioned for what the UN does?

Serbs all of sudden care for international law and minorities. B92 is turning into the Comedy Central with such comments such as "what about the Chechens....what about the X?"

Putin is asking for patience and to slow down because he sees that things are finally getting out of his control and soon he will see a decision being made with or without his approval.
Putin has to either join EU and USA or be left alone for a little serbia. But im sure he will leave serbia high and dry just like he did when he removed the russian soldiers out of Kosova 4 years ago.

Ron,
We are Albanians and we don't represent any other nation or minority in the world so, stop asking us about Tibet, Basque, Neverland... and what not. If YOU want to interfere in other country's politics, go ahead, if you want to know more about them, ask people who represent them.
Putin is simply trying to stirr things up and encourage unrest which is totaly out of order.

Methinks that EA has been reading too many James Bond novels...

"The winner will be the will of people of Kosova to be fully independent country."

EA, do you actually LIVE in Kosovo?

After Dec. 10, do you think anything will change..
You're missing the whole point.
You HAVE been given self-governance.

As far as Independence goes.. that word is the OPPOSITE of DEPENDENCE..
Get to that point, and THEN we can talk...
Meanwhile, while Kosovo is DEPENDENT, it will always be in limbo..

Mike

The problem here is that the international community let Kosovo rot for 7 years and it's only now that we have this sense of immediate urgency to do something as soon as possible because "we cannot delay anymore." Where the Hell were these diplomatic eggheads between 1999 and 2006? As much as I sympathize with the Serb side, both Serbs and Albanians have been strung along far too long already.

EA,

The times have changed indeed, just not in the way you have described. This is not simply a "diversion strategy" on Russia's part, rather it reflects a major rift in the international order and geopolitical balance, for good or bad. Your optimism has blinded you to this all too true reality. December 10 may well turn out to be a flash point which facilitates American hegemonic slippage, and not the other way around as you suggest. But hey, we'll see. Peace!

"Spain is facing renewed violence from regional Basque separatist group ETA, while there have been calls in the mainly Flemish speaking north of Belgium for greater autonomy from the mainly Francophone south"
This is a Russian DIVERSION STRATEGY to split Europe in the middle when it comes to Kosova. A very good espionage attempt. The times have changed Mr Putin. Europe, the USA and Kosovar Albanians know everything about you. Expecting Putin changing his mind is REALISTIC as persuading Milloshevic to stop the ethnic cleansing in Kosova. Serbs will fight for their "sovereignity" over Kosova as long as Russia wish. It will be another Serbo-Russian humiliating loss after the 10th of December 2007. No one should ask after the 10th of December when deciding the Kosova issue that there should be "no winner or loser". The winner will be the will of people of Kosova to be fully independent country.
