Vojvodina will have autonomy sooner or later! That should not surprise anyone. The one thing that I as someone from Vojvodina do not understand is why it is important how many Serbs or non-Serbs live in Vojvodina? Vojvodina is economical, cultural, regional and now (again) a political region and is to remain that in future in autonomy or even as republic. Idea of independent Vojvodina is not some anti Serbian ideology, but the simple need of expressing identity of Vojvodina people, no matter of nationality or religion they may be. Vojvodina is not Kosova, and not Serbia either. Vojvodina is Vojvodina.

Waw, being here in U.S for 20 years, i did not know that Vojvodina's autonomy was abolished.
Two commentators here have two various percentages of serbs in Vojvodina.
1 Says in Vojvodina are 85% sebrs.
The other says 65%, make up your minds guys.
Vojvodina after the IIWW was deliberately populated with serbs, (fertile lands), and change the demographics of Vojvodina, which succeeded to a great extent. The same policy was applied to Kosova, and did not succeed much due to ever growing Albanian population.
This shows the serbian "democracy" abolishing the autonomy of indigenous hungarians, and albanians.
Serbia should make Vojvodina a federal unit and give Sandzak the autonomy. That would be called a democracy in a true sense.

Forget about it! It's best to have one Serbia without autonomy for any region. One Serbia from Subotica to Prizren. The more government you have the more bureaucracy and the more government workers have to come up with some new idea to justify their positions. People look at history. Automony never works. Look at ancient Rome split of east and west. Look at the death of Charlemagne and the split into three units of the Holy Roman Empire. Look at Yugoslavia with 6 republics and then coming up with 2 autonomous states within Serbia. It may work in the short term like it did with the Roman Empire, Yugoslavia after World War II and with the economy in Vojvojdina for 14 years, but always those are short term answers and not long term answers. People forget the selfishness and the immediate needs; which usually means some individuals are pocketing off with these ideas and look out for the Serbian state of the future. One Serbia all the time from Subotica to Prizren! The more appeasing the more problems for later.

Delije,

You state that the minorities in Vojvodina have good lives. Good if we compare their situation to the nightmarish situation of the K-Albanians of the nineties. At closer look it is pretty bad. The selective justice is a good example. For the same crime Hungarians are very severely punished while Serbs not at all. I repeat here the example of 3 Hungarian brothers condemned to a total of 75 years for beating a Serb. In similar cases - if the perpetrators are Serbs - they are not even arrested. So this is what you call good life?

KS...your comments offer zero as is evident over the months of viewing your comments on a Serbian website. For hating Serbs so much, you sure seem like you want/need to interact with them. Can you say hypocrit? For that is what your blogs are, simplistic comments that demonstrate nothing other than your short sighted and racist attitude.

Your dream of Republic of Kosovo is nothing more, for it will be VETOED by any one of the European nations (Spain, Slovakia, Romania, Cyprus..)and Russia and China in the EU. The US is being hammered in every corner of the world, and I doubt US taxpayers will fund another action to help Albanians in another attmpt to land grab in the Balkans.

Eventually the US will leave, and a powerful Serbia at your doorstep remains, economically independent and plenty of leverage in the world community. Kosovo is an integral part of Serbia, not some dillusional Bannana Republic born into existance by a terrorist organization.

Teni, There is a big difference between Kosovo and vojvodina. There is no need to take up arms, serbs make up 65% of the population and growing thanks to the systematic cleansing of Serbs and non Albanians from Kosovo. Serbs are more united now than ever. They would never want to go against their own people. We can be united and civil towards others. Vojvodina is a multicultural, multiethnic and multireligious area of Serbia and thats what makes it so beautiful. Pristina should take pointers from Vojvodina on how to treat their minorities and their minorities cultural and religious sites. The minorities in vojvodina have good lives and see the way that they are treated as equals. Sure Serbia has it's problems on minority rights, but compared to Kosovo, where all freedoms and cultural rights were stipped from the minorities.Like i said vojvodina is multiethnic and does not need a UN resolution to protect the minorities rights as does kosovo, which is on it's way to becoming monoethnic society. Albanians only. Serbia has become as small as it is due to mostly religious differences, not the question of autonomy.

Princip keep your internal affairs out of your neighborhs (Kosova) problems. Kosova is becoming a Republic not part of some autonomy plan of Serbia.

Even if Vojvodina gets autonomy, and there are a number of rational arguments that it should, it will not break away from Serbia. With over 85% of the population Serbian, there's no reason to. Besides, Vojvodina is one of the few areas of Europe that could honestly survive and prosper under more autonomy that within a centralized system (Catalonia being the clear other).

Bob

Strong local government yes. Autonomy no.

Vojvodina is part of Serbia and occupied predominantly by Serbs - cooperation between the bordering ethnicities is generally good and should stay that way.

Economically the future development of the whole of Serbia should be good; all will benefit. Relations with the EU are better negotiated from a position of unity.

The local voice is vital to the effective running of the area - the democratic processes have to take that into account. But splitting to create political fiefdoms is not what is needed.

It is just trouble making to talk of autonomy.

Princip, UK

pre 16 godina

If decentralising why stop with a unitary Vojvodina - surely bringing power to the local level would best be served through realising the regions of which Vojvodina has 3; Bačka in the northwest, Banat in the east and Srem.

Decentralisation to 11 regions of Serbia might be a more progressive way forward.
3 regions of Vojvodina
2 regions of Kosovo & Metohija
5 Central Srbija regions
1 representing Belgrade

In reorganising the regional structure one needs to re-evaluate the parlimentary numbers and other layers of administartion and remove duplication.

All of this must be considered over time an dthere should be no haste as one needs to ensure that it is absolutely the right and can only be through a meticulous process planning and preparation. In reality your looking at something that requires at least 4/5 years research, preparation and planning.

Belgrade should give Vojvodina autonomy now and should not repeat the same mistakes it committed in Kosova; and in order to avoid Serbia getting even smaller than it has become already. Unfortunately I think that Belgrade never does any concessions unless people take up arms.
