Nick,

"…The "government slams state dept. comments" but I have never seen it slam Russian comments that expound the opposite view on a daily basis. Isn't that obstructionism also? … "

No, it isn't. in this particular case Russia insists on the rule international law. There can't be special cases, rules are universal. Solution must be find in direct negotiation between the parties. What is obstructive in that?

US on the other hand is trying to force break up of Serbia against all norms of international diplomacy and politics. That is destructive.

"….Having said that, who do you think will help the economy of the Balkans, Russia or the EU/West? (Here is a hint - consider that the Balkans have been aligned with Russia up until now and take a look at their present economies.)
(Nick Kvocka, 14. October 2007 18:58) … "

I have a hint for you: take a look at your Southern neighbors, Latin America, "blessed" to be under US control for a century or so and yet, huge majority of the people there lives in extreme poverty. Their quality of life is actually far worse then quality of life used to be in the East Europe during the Cold War.

Back to the Balkans, we were actually doing just fine during the SFR Jugoslavia period.
Our problems began when West decided to teach us "democracy".

Yes Nick, you are correct about one thing. Here in America everybody is too tired making money and consuming the worlds resources at an unsustainable rate to worry about silly things like what is best for the country. That is why our government can get away with all the evil it commits, like its support for Kosovo independence, which will be a NIGHTMARE for Europe and the world! Let's get the Serbs working so they don't have to worry about the destruction of their nation.

1. The "government slams state dept. comments" but I have never seen it slam Russian comments that expound the opposite view on a daily basis. Isn't that obstructionism also?

2. In my opinion, the problem in the Balkan nationalistic present-day feifdoms is the economy. If everyone was going to work everyday making money to pay house payments, car payments, credit card payments, taking the kids on the weekends to school functions and child sports events like soccer, Babe Ruth baseball, Pop Warner football, etc. they would be too tired to even think about nationalisic politics. They would be more concerned about the taxes they have pay.

On the other hand, if the population is unemployed, hungry, despondent, with too much time on their hands, they will be angry and looking for something or someone to take their anger out on.

Having said that, who do you think will help the economy of the Balkans, Russia or the EU/West? (Here is a hint - consider that the Balkans have been aligned with Russia up until now and take a look at their present economies.)

"The protection of sovereign territory and upholding international laws is far too important to most countries in Europe to just step aside and allow the US to have its way. "
Of course, EU would help Serbs if Serbs practiced what they preached. If Serbs actually protected yugoslav civilians in Croatia, Bosnia and Kosova, they might have a sympathetic ear about all their current bluster @ int'l law and borders.

Casey said "that independence for Kosovo would not mean the creation of Greater Albania".

That is not what most Albanians think! They understand fully that this will lead to their ultimate goal of "uniting all Albanian lands under one flag", including lands from Montenegro, Macedonia, and Greece, which they (Albanians) consider stolen from them in the late 19th & early 20th century.

By the way cheers; NO ONE here in the US wants an independent Kosovo and God-forbid a 51st state that would drag us down even further, keep dreaming if it makes you happy!

Casey forgets that in light od national interests of USA one should not forget that Serbia has them also. And all roads to Europe from albania go thru Serbia. That is going to be one expensive route if you do continue to insist on K-albs having their way.

the US could end up looking quite foolish.

and those who set all their hopes on them, could be very frustrated afterwards.

let´s hope KFOR calms them down again before they try to burn down a few more cultural sites.

The bells are ringing loud and clear for anybody that has ears.
US State Department is very clear on its stance, and there is no going back.

Yup thats why they keep going back to Russia to plea that they dont veto their resolution.

Serbian has to learn how to behave in a western civilised way. In politics and diplomacy ANTICIPATION is not a obstruction. These are two different ways. What would the Serbian government say if the USA would have said that "should the negotiation process fail by the 10th of December Kosova will remain part of Serbia" Would that be an OBSTRUCTION or ANTICIPATION?

When will Serbian politicians admit that Kosovo is a dead duck, we don,t need it don,t want it it is a millstone around our necks and soon to be Europes too.

I got to admit this, every time I hear these statements made by US governnment, I am getting more convinced that they want the independence more than us. Heck, i was thinking...i would rather like for Kosova to be US-51 state rather than part of "great Albania". As soon as we we're going to declare our independence, I think we should do this, I bet even the northern Mitrovica would be on our side and say adios to Serbia...get US passport and travel anywhere in the World, and get US education. After all that is where Serb foreign minister got educated? Right...

kate

pre 16 godina

It is not a special case at all. The US just can't get over the fact that they are not allowed to just do whatever they choose unimpeded.

The protection of sovereign territory and upholding international laws is far too important to most countries in Europe to just step aside and allow the US to have its way.

I am certain that many in the US administration also agree with this. It's all about testing Russia and moving boundaries; Kosovo is just a pawn.
