On 7th May 1999 a cluster bomb was dropped on the city of Nis in southern Serbia. NATO claimed the bomb was destined for a 'military' target. However, the bomb landed on an open vegetable market at midday. It killed 18 innocent civilians including a pregnant woman and injured 60 other innocent civilians. No one has been held accountable for this atrocity. Clinton, Blair, Clarke and NATO escaped any form of punishment for this indefencable attack on a civilian target.

Whilst i welcome NATO's assistance in locating unexploded cluster bombs as reported last week in various media sources i cannot understand why NATO thought it a justifiable weapon to use against Serbian cities, towns and villages in 1999? Cluster bombs accounted for 26% of Serbian civilian deaths in that conflict (Human Rights Watch memorandum 1999). Britain now supports an international ban on cluster bombs. However, this support has arrived 8 years too late for the city of Nis.
