Dear all. FYI what matters to a potential inward invester is the following (in no particular order).
Political stability. Obviously the status question is a major factor here, but also internal political structures and policy. There has to be some form of long term strategy by the government that encourages investment.
Infrastructure. If I am producing goods, I need to get them out and to market.
Legal redress. If I have a problem, I expect a legal system that is quick and fair. I do not want to wait months (years?) for a decision.
Clear tax policy. I want to know what I have to pay, and have stability for the future. If I am going to invest, I want to make sure I can measure the profit. (Investors are after profit, they are not charities)
An educated workforce. I need to be confident that I can find sufficient quality and quantity of workers.
Ease of bureaucracy. I want it simple and quick. No long queues, no long winded and indeciferable forms, knowledgeable civil servants.
An effective banking system. I want to be able to move money (in whatever amount I want) without having to justify every cent to some clerk.

These are just a few. Kosovo is not alone in seeking FDI (Foreign Direct Investment), you are in competition with all the other Balkan states, as well as China, India, Pakistan, etc. This is no easy ride, and, I am sorry to burst bubble shere, but the day after independence you will not be flooded out with offers of investment. This will be a long slow journey, and NOTHING will happen without a proper framework for investment.

Look to your politicians. Do they REALLY care about the country, or just about the words "Independent Kosovo(a)"

To Cvele: "I dont see Kosovo economy going anywhere but down the drain. 15-20% of GDP are from people sending you money from abroad? That would mean you are even worse of then it seems."

Isn't this what you have been predicating for so long, i.e starve albanians to death?

Teni and KS
Who will invest if UN doesnt recognise you? Thats right, only people loooking to steal.

Teni and KS
Therefor, unemployment will go even higher once all those that refuse to recognise u unilaterally abdicate. The restr will recognise but will not invest, why would they throw their money away when there is no way you could ever pay them back.

I dont see Kosovo economy going anywhere but down the drain. 15-20% of GDP are from people sending you money from abroad? That would mean you are even worse of then it seems. Thx for that important statistic.

As for independence you both make me laugh. Even Rice said worst thing Kosovo could do is declare independence without UN.

Cvele: exactly my point there are no unicorns so forget about KosovA. And we have never depended on Russia mentally or politically as you do.

Cvele said: "Kosovo without Russian support will starve both economically and mentally. "

Just to let you know something the Kosovars are starving right now, unenmployment is 40-50% (some cities as high as 80%). Kosovars do receive help from their sons in diaspora who contribute 15-20% of GDP.

With Independence a lot of foreign business will invest which is what they aren't doing now bc of questionable status. I can only see Kosovar's prospering.

winston,

The Tamils are already pointing to Kosovo as an example.

Iraq maybe will fall apart. What to do with the Kurds?

Putin might recognize Ossetia and Abkhzia.

The US is creating BIG PROBLEMS!
Good luck, Bush!

I cannot believe the mess the West, mostly US, has created in the Western Balkans. If they would have kept their noses out of other sovereign nations' internal affairs, this Kosovo dilemma would be non-existent. It's like with a child - if you never mention the word toy, the child it fine but, if you do mention the word toy, the kid will drive you crazy until you do. Good luck to all. I just hope America learns a lesson here but, I somehow dought it.

This is beyond beleife what I am reading. Why would Koosva starve eonomically, forget about mentaly becaseeu it makes no snece whatso ever? I don't see any food item on shelters inside shops that it said "Made in Russia".

Aha so why arnt the US recognising Chechens? For the same reason they wont dream of recognising Kosovo. Its in Russian interest if they do. Kosovo without Russian support will starve both economically and mentally. Try not to be so optimisticc, remember that thatchi, checku have NO power. What they say is as if someone was reading a fairy book. Wishing it would come true. We all know there are no unicorns out there.

This is just ridicuolus - its just shows how some media'a are ill-informed and how they try to twist every bit of news and make something more than it is.

The incident has nothing to do with the status of Kosovo, and its not politicaly motivated. Everybody knows that the bomb has something to do with Enver Sekiraqa's link to Triumf Riza's murderer.

Well haven't the Russians lost touch with reality! The Hong Kong model? Who dreamt that up?
And if we were to judge how much an entity deserves to be a state from the level of crime in it well I guess Russia has no right to exist anymore at all.
