I can guarantee you that these reservists are simply peasants who were forced into fulfilling their duties. I think they should be paid and it is a shame how they are being ignored by the Serbian government.

Kate, I'm amongst few Albanian here who believe that you are not Serbian. Not because of your non-biased/balanced posts, but simply because your English is far above the average of the Serbian posters. Please, Kate, tell me, do you admit that Serbian authorities committed any mass scale crimes against Albanian civilians in Kosovo during 1998 and 1999? I have no doubts that you are an educated person, and you show it very clearly when defending the Serbian cause here. Your comments are very human in their nature, but only when referring to Serbian civilian casualties. You have also shown a good understanding of international law, albeit you seem not to be very found the term Humanitarian Intervention. One thing bothers me however. How comes that you have never shown any sort of sympathy with the families of innocent Albanians, whose only fault was their ethnicity? I trust you will not disappoint me this time.

Alexander i might be able to answer your question, on how would an non-serb be so keen on the Serb cause.

It can be so, if he *ONCE* travel thru the country.
No need to say more here.

Could you suggest the same for *anyone* who has traveled alone thru Albania??

Kate you sound so sure about these guys. It sounds like you have interviewed everyone of them and you also know which Unit they belong to during the war.No ofense but what I am trying to say is you cannot vouch about their backround. I can not assure you what my brother did during the war with his unit, because I was not there with him and he can tell me all kinds of lies. Does that mean I have to beleive everything I am told, obviously not. Again , you , me or anybody else we can not vouch for others that we don't even know. As you say that you live in western country and you are not even a Serb.

Not true, Aleksander. As I have said many times, I do believe that there were terrible atrocities but argue the high numbers claimed and who carried them out (that doesn't lessen how terrible they were by the way, but it does have a political impact). I believe that most (not all) were carried out by paramilitary psychos, as opposed to the regular army.

The atrocities that were carried out against Serbs received MUCH less publicity, therefore I feel justified in pointing out that the Serbian community both in Kosovo and beyond also suffered terribly at the hands of the KLA. Other victims were 'disloyal' Albanians and Roma. Not to mention the suffering of the entire population under Nato's attack.

I would lock up all war criminals who were tried and found guilty and throw away the key for murderers, rapists etc. That goes for all ethnicities. Personally I am against the death penalty, as well as against war wherever it can be avoided.

We are talking in this thread about reservists. I am not saying that they are all innocent, but in any forward thinking society we have innocence until proven guilty.

Otherwise you have lynch mob mentality such as the lists of reservists and regular troops published by that Kosovan paper. This sort of approach just stokes up hate and violence.

Liam - That is a ridiculous and ignorant thing to say. You know nothing about these reservists, let alone whether they committed war crimes.

There is certainly no shame in fighting for your own country as long as it is within the rules of warfare (not for example attacking a nation from 20,000 feet and breaking the Geneva, Helsinki and UN Charter in the process).

Some of these people committed terrible war crimes and crimes against humanity in Kosovo that have shamed Serbia and alienated Kosovars to the point that they will accept nothing less than a peaceful permament divorce from Serbia. Perhaps not all of those protesting are guilty, but few will sympathise with a group that paid themselves well during that conflict, by stealing from war victims and others.
