Kosovo will become independent, with or without Serbia's and Russia's consent. In fact it would be much better for Serbs to accept new reality and move on. I can't understand the arguments that they will never give up their craddle. How much money and energy Serbia spends trying to prevent the inevitable. There is probably corruption in UNMIK and Kosovo institutions, but there is also in US, EU let alone in Serbia. Prime minister of Serbia was killed in the middle of Belgrade by mafia I believe.

Any country, any part of the world would be a hotbed of crime if unemployment rates were 50, 60 or 70 percent like in Kosova.
The problem is Kosovar leaders believe that independence automatically means progress. All of them, except Edita Tahiri, who said (in an interview I made with her 3 years ago): There are many independent countries with lousy economies.
People of the World, local economic activity succeeds by legitimate production and trade of goods and services. Criminal activity succeeds by trafficking in human misery and contraband (drugs, arms, stolen goods), waging war, and dumping loads of money in the hopes of solving social problems. This is true regardless of ethnicity!
Albanians will have to realize that the only way they will get independence is by legitimate means of economic progress and integrating into competitive markets. Boycott Serbia and there will be a black market in Kosovo void of international investment. Right now, Kosovo is a workfare state. Meanwhile, the rest of Serbia grows and invests, economically and diplomatically. If separatists weren't in the picture, the Serbian government would be marketing Kosovo to global tourism at a minimum but right now it's being marketed to career bureaucrats. A legitimate autonomous Kosovo may even have a positive impact on Albania but investment (independence) pyramids don't count!
Reintegration of Kosovo with Serbia would not necessarily be a recipe for eliminating corruption, as we have reason to know. But reintegration is not in the cards in any case, no matter how much the current government in Belgrade would like to pretend that it is a realistic possibility.

As a Swedish reader I'm a bit surprised to read this in Serbian media now. It was a series of articles by Maciej Zaremba, published in the beginning of June in the biggest Swedish newspaper, DN.

The bomb blast this morning and the corruption of UNMIK and native Kosovo institutions only demostrates that Serbia will be much better off if it doesn't have to take care of Kosovo. If these are highly paid UNMIK employees, can you imagine the mess that would be created if they were replaced by low paid, Serbian government beaurocrats?

Its always been like that. Guns have controlled Kosovo for 8 years now. Even while the Serbs were in Kosovo and tribes had influence, average Joe still had some sort of security. Im obviously talking before the conflict of 98-99. We just wanted the KLA. Autonomy shouldn't have been taken away. But then again terrorist attacks shouldnt have taken place in seeking for independence before AND during autonomy.

The economy is non existant, appart from the black economiy. There is almost nothing being done to recover the province economically. To all the pro-independents out there, please explain to me how Kosovo can survive economically on its own. Or does it really mean that an independent Kosovo will have to allign itself with Albania to form a viable economic area.
The political situation is almost as bad. At the risk of the probable reaction, in my experience (and I deal with many politicians at all levels) there is too much family/tribalism, and too many obvious links with organised crime. Unless, and until Kosovo is led by 'clean' politicians and manage the difficult process of cleaning up corruption in the PISG (and UNMIK) then 'independence' should not be on the agenda.
There is still a long way to go, and until there is an honest discussion, Kosovo is going nowhere.

How is there 'progress' in Kosovo when Serbs have to live behind barbed wire, where Serb grandmothers get beaten if they speak Serbian, where they need military escorts to go grocery shopping, where their cattle get stolen, where their churches are burned down and their cemetaries desecrated.....The officials who are writing these reports to further their own careers are an embarrassment to humanity. It's nice to see that the truth is finally coming out as to what kind of society Kosovo really is, and what kind of apartheid state the US supports.

Perhaps you also believe that Serbian goverment bribed German BND to come up with a 100 page report about the criminality in Kosovo, that is much more damning than this article. It tells everything mentioned in this article, but with German attention to details. And it is official EU document, not newpaper article.
EU voters do not care if Albanian syndicate has Ahtisaari on their payroll or not. EU voters do not care about Albanian extremists burning churches or expelling Serbs, Roma, Goranis, Jews, Croats and others. They do not care when KLA goons murder more than 1000 Albanians under UNMIK mandate. But they are very sensitive to the fact that they finance this criminal enterprise. This is why this article explicitly mentions 22 billion of EU voter's money squadered in Kosovo to support this.
Kosovo today is a lawless environment where the impunity for the criminal acts is the norm and corruption the way of doing business.

Reintegration of Kosovo with Serbia would not necessarily be a recipe for eliminating corruption, as we have reason to know. But reintegration is not in the cards in any case, no matter how much the current government in Belgrade would like to pretend that it is a realistic possibility.
Reintegration is not in the cards, because there's no way, short of another war (for which nobody in Brussels or in Belgrade has the stomach), that a Serbian government can exercise any meaningful sovereignty over Kosovo. Proposals for reintegration are no more than empty talk meant for domestic political consumption.
Meanwhile the UN's colonial administration in Kosovo is indeed riddled with corruption and incompetence. As amateur colonial overlords, UNMiK's internationals are in practice answerable to no one and enjoy immunity. The population has good reason to resent the UN authorities and to demand the self-determination. But the fact that they want the UN's "internationals" out of Kosovo doesn't mean that they want Belgrade's administrators and army to come back.

People of the World, local economic activity succeeds by legitimate production and trade of goods and services. Criminal activity succeeds by trafficking in human misery and contraband (drugs, arms, stolen goods), waging war, and dumping loads of money in the hopes of solving social problems. This is true regardless of ethnicity!
Albanians will have to realize that the only way they will get independence is by legitimate means of economic progress and integrating into competitive markets. Boycott Serbia and there will be a black market in Kosovo void of international investment. Right now, Kosovo is a workfare state. Meanwhile, the rest of Serbia grows and invests, economically and diplomatically. If separatists weren't in the picture, the Serbian government would be marketing Kosovo to global tourism at a minimum but right now it's being marketed to career bureaucrats. A legitimate autonomous Kosovo may even have a positive impact on Albania but investment (independence) pyramids don't count!

Any country, any part of the world would be a hotbed of crime if unemployment rates were 50, 60 or 70 percent like in Kosova.
The problem is Kosovar leaders believe that independence automatically means progress. All of them, except Edita Tahiri, who said (in an interview I made with her 3 years ago): There are many independent countries with lousy economies.

Kosovo will become independent, with or without Serbia's and Russia's consent. In fact it would be much better for Serbs to accept new reality and move on. I can't understand the arguments that they will never give up their craddle. How much money and energy Serbia spends trying to prevent the inevitable. Since when is democratic to work against the wishes of overwhelming majority.
There is probably corruption in UNMIK and Kosovo institutions, but there is also in US, EU let alone in Serbia. Prime minister of Serbia was killed in the middle of Belgrade by mafia I believe.
So cut down angry rhetoric and look to the future. It is 21st century.
