Being a democratic country Serbia and her government should be able to listen to all her citizens and provide them security, health, education, wellfare and everything else a state offers to her citizens.
If all these basic needs are fulfilled to the population there is no reason for any ethnic minority, regardless of its percentage of population, to claim independence. In practice there are countries in Europe like Belgium, Switzerland and Spain that function perfectly. Although there are now and then claims for independence or more autonomy these countries are still functioning like a single country/state and people live with the status quo regardless of language, cultural and/or historical reasons. All ethnical groups have a certain level of mutual trust among each other which was built over time and not overnight.
So I believe the key word is a functioning country/state with mutual trust. But can Serbia maintain its territorial intergrity? Will Serbia be a functioning state with her multiethnical composition?
The generally accepted reality is that Serbia is not functioning as a single country representing all its people and territory. This is now mostly due to UNMIK troops presence. But looking into the future when UNMIK/EU will have left Kosovo, would Serbia be a functioning state?
Majority of the people living in the Kosovo province were part of an ethnic cleansing driven by their very own government not so long ago. Being a democratic government Serbia must show to be responsible for its missdoings in the past; acknowledge them and present real reconciliation.

Should Serbia offer autonomy?
If Serbia wants to keep the province of Kosovo it should first implement the corrective actions and get its citizens trust back. Afterwards offering autonomy under Serbia as a country would have been just a logical step in a democratric country. Autonomy would then be offered by a coscient government and not because the province is not under the control of Serbia.

I think autonomy for Kosovo is long overdue. Autonomous Kosovo 17 years would have been a good example in the region of a functioning multiethnical country.

B92,
I am very disappointed with you to have removed (censured) the BBC link from my comment. I know it was extremely disturbing but wanted people like Princip, Kate, Bob, Cvele, Dragan, Koshtunica, and others to see how excectionally well have behaved in mantaining respect for international law. That might be more realistic after watching that BBC link.

EA States: "Here is the Very TRUTH why Serbia hasn't got the moral and political right of soverignity over Kosova. The practical independence of Kosova has been won since 1999..."

Response: Actually, if that were true, which it is not, the world can also say: "Here is the Very TRUTH why Kosovo Albanians don't have the moral and political right of soverignity over Kosovo. They have shown that they are incapable of tolerance and responsibility for minority populations, as is exemplified by the last eight years they've run the province. Practical independence of Kosovo was lost in 1999 when they began their unending ethnic cleansing campaign."

i believe kosova should be independent because of the forced assimilation into the serb state in early 1900. and any offer of autonimity or self rule in serbia could only ONLY ONLY be considered if albanians were given 20% or more of the serbian govt since they are they are 20% of the population... and they did offer serbs n minorities their respected % of the govt in an independent kosovA.. thank you and welcome to kosovA.

I think Serbia's stance on this issue is not unreasonable. Look, compromise is reasonable. But you can't go on to take away a province just because the majority in the province, who are migrating Albanians, want to.

Kosovo should remain a part of Serbia, and the Albanians there can either peacefully assimilate, or they can go back to where they came from in the first place.

Just stumbled on an article where I red this:

"Vojin Dimitrijevic, head of Belgrade's Human Rights Centre, said the "increasing anti-Western rhetoric in Serbia in past months reminds us of the Milosevic regime." Another analyst, Miroslav Prokopijevic of the Institute for European Studies, warned that Serbia's leaning to Russia "is a tragically bad orientation.

I mean these two gentlemen are very well respected analysts and scholars in Serbia and the World.

Are we all wrong, and all Serbian posters here are right?

Koshtunica and DSS together with the Radicals are going to destroy Serbia, economicaly and politicaly.

The old say: (for whom the bells ring).

Princip, Kate, Bob, Koshtunica, Tadic and to all Serbs,
Do you really think as Princip that
"The whole Government has been working exceptionally well in their diplomatic efforts throughout the world - ensuring the full truth regarding Serbia's province and in maintaining respect for international law.
(Princip, UK, 23. September 2007 14:21)
Here is the Very TRUTH why Serbia hasn't got the moral and political right of soverignity over Kosova. The practical independence of Kosova has been won since 1999 so any offer from the Serbian Government for a "substantial autonomy" is nonsense. Soon the Kosovar Albanians will have the full sovereignity for Kosova because its leadership is united to work hard for it and they have also the diplomatic support of Albania itself for Ahtisari PLAN.

Yes, this government has worked exceptionally well to try and convince the world why Kosovo should stay as a part of Serbia. Results are clear: Russia and Greece understand their claim. I am not sure why that is. Any ideas? I would have guessed that it's because they speak english with more or less the same accent.

I feel bad for Serb tax payers who are funding these useless trips. Next time elect leaders who can afford visiting these countries with money from their pockets.

The whole Government has been working exceptionally well in their diplomatic efforts throughout the world - ensuring the full truth regarding Serbia's province and in maintaining respect for international law. The "EU" have started to realise that a real compromise is in fact the best solution and has distanced itself from the recklessness shown by the US in forcing the partition of Serbia.

Jovan

right so, work for a better understanding of the serbian stance, and for the respect of international law.

many other countries will appreciate it, since it is in their interest, too.
