"If Milosevic was all about partitioning people along ethnic lines then why was/is Serbia-proper the most ethnically mixed area of all the former Yugoslav republics?"
Walter Kess

Walter, This is not an intelligent question. If Serbia is ethnically the most mixed it is not by Serbia's choice but by fact that Serbia got some territories as presents with mixed populations. After the miscalculation in Kosovo Serbia could not afford to try to clince Vojvodina too.

Walter Kess

pre 16 godina

Victor,

Milosevic didn't have a concept of Greater Serbia. He advocated the preservation of the Socialist Yugoslavia that had existed for 50 years before he came to power.

Tudjman, Izetbegovic, and the KLA are the ones who wanted to (and unfortunately did) carve-up Yugoslavia on ethnic lines.

The KLA didn't go to war for the sake of a multi-ethnic Kosovo. There weren't any non-Albanians in the KLA because the KLA only cared about making an Albanian state in Kosovo at the expense of every other ethnic group.

If Milosevic was all about partitioning people along ethnic lines then why was/is Serbia-proper the most ethnically mixed area of all the former Yugoslav republics?

When you look at the names of the authors of this paper, it is the same as the ICG group, which is nothing but an well paid albanian lobby group.

You know we have a lot of money. We have so much money we can pay all the governments of the US, France, UK, Italy etc etc. We have so much money we can pay the majority of their senators. We have so much money can pay hundreds of institutes, think-tanks, organizations etc etc. We have so much money we can pay the CNN, BBC, REUTERS etc etc. According to a Serb mind we have so much money we buy everyone and everything that revolves around Kosova/o.

Recently you were against the partition of Serbia, now you are advocating albanian independance. Have some western newspapers in Quebec changed your mind?

Jovan, I think I'd worry more about how Russia will let down the Serbs like it has in many times in the past...

What's the record:

Russia let Serbia down by not preventing 1999 airstrikes.

USA didn't let Albanians down by going with the airstrikes, despite the "high and mighty" UNSC.

"Partition of Kosovo along ethnic lines threatens to destabilize the Balkans, in particular Macedonia, and to encourage nationalist rhetoric, especially in Bosnia."

If that statement is true then the following revised statement must also be true.

"Partition of 'Serbia' along ethnic lines threatens to destabilize the Balkans, in particular Macedonia, and to encourage nationalist rhetoric, especially in Bosnia."

ALl throught the nineties the International Community firmly resisted the division of any of the republics of the former Yugoslavia. Why then is it now ok to divide Serbia. Is there anyone who does not realistically believe that giving the territory of Kosovo to an armed ethnic independence movement will not destabilise the other former republics?

It is unfortunate that the B92 failed to qualify who is behind the so called 'US Institute for Peace' - for those less informed this organization is funded by the US Government and largely controlled by the neo-conservatives and used for disinformation and US Government propaganda particularly against Serbia over the recent years. In the article as given at least they have identified the US fears: Kosovo partition, spread of unrest elsewhere etc. The Serbian Government should take advantage of this and encourage Bosnian Serbs to demand an immediate independence of Republica Srpska should the US act outside the UN in regard to Kosovo status and apply subtle pressure elsewhere where the US interests are at stake and do so with the extreme urgency. Can you explain why? Just because this Institute wrote an article in favor of its sponsor? You will need to give a more convincing reason than this!

They advocate the carving up of Serbia, but not the carving up of Kosovo - what a joke! They advocate the carving up of Serbia, but not the carving up of Bosnia - what a joke! Please stop trying to brainwash Serbs with your illogical and one sided propoganda, we are much smarter than that. And it's amazing that they have the gall to call themselves the 'Institute of Peace', when these were the same people cheering on NATO dropping cluster bombs on civilian targets, killing make-up women in the RTS building, destroying power plants and bridges all over Serbia.

the reason why I post this is that it is written by an albanian analyst:

"Russian elections next year could also provide impetus, providing Mr Putin really is out of the picture.

Meanwhile if gas and oil prices were to fall, then a weakened Moscow might need the west and the Kosovo question might just be solved.

But with the situation in Iraq and increasing problems in Afghanistan, the chances of the outgoing US administration and the new one in London taking on another serious international headache and confronting Russia just because of Kosovo's independence, seem very, very low.

Instead, as all of these scenarios suggest, it looks like delays and procrastination will be the order of the day on the Kosovo question."

«The paper dismisses any notion of partitioning Kosovo, and advocates an urgent implementation of the Ahtisaari plan, should the ongoing negotiations yield no results. »

Partitioning Kosovo would equate to partitioning the people of Kosovo, and this is the worst solution. That's what Milosevic wanted to do with his concept of a GREATER SERBIA.

As so many international observers are suggesting, the only way to settle this passes through the independence of Kosovo. Albanians and Serbs in the same state. I know, it would take time for the Serbs and Albanians to build news bridges of understanding and cooperation, but it would come, just as cohabitation came between France and Germany. Time is the best healer of all problems.

Rehashed propaganda! Just look at the names attached to this and you will see that it has no real credibility. Most of them are known to be long-standing anti-Serb advocates of independence: Abramowitz, Serwer, Bugajski. It was also interesting to see Jessen-Peterssen on the list, as if there was any doubt about his complete lack of impartiality as UNMIK head. Anyway, it is just a rehash of ICG arguments.

Bush must be really worried about the US economy if he thinks he can force the partition of Kosovo, stay in Afhganistan and Iraq, and likely open a new front with a war with Iran. If he really has to spend so much money to keep the US economy afloat and himself in power then i suppose he must do what he thinks he has to do. desperate times call for desperate measures. The US will be the ultimate loser in this world power play.

“The term ‘maximum autonomy’ means that Belgrade does not want to rule Kosovo and does not regard the Albanians residing there as its citizens, rather the Kosovo Serbs who make up a small part of the population in the province,” he argued.

Jesus Christ, what is this? How can someone come to this conclusion?

Mt God, I'm not and expert in politics but I can understand in this situation that Msximum Autonomy means that Belgrad wants to satisfy the Albanians in Kosovo and give them power to rule themselves in a goal to reach compromise.

What this group of 12 Experts says its totally the opposite.
Look EXPERTS: Belgrad would be MORE than happy to rule over whole Kosovo and including the Albanians there. This would be their ULTIMATE win and ULTIMATE loss to the Albanians side as Kosovo would be an integral part of Serbia.

Even a child could figure that out but now I understand better how much this issue is important to the US when they give such responsability to these called experts without even basic knowledge of the situation. Serbia's future can't be decided by these people.

What is the Serbian Unity Congress doing in USA when such conclusions can be made and presented to the state departement of USA?

What a joke from “Institute for PEACE” in Washington! What do they think they are? Better they look how to get out of mess they created in the Middle East than to advocate solution nobody asked it for.
If “Institute for Peace” didn’t want to be remembered as “Institute for PEASE” (which I consider as a more adequate name of the institute), it should raise its voice before their neighbours from Washington (Clinton and gang) started rape of Serbia.
