In a perfect world, I too would enjoy the idea of having a super highway connecting parts of Serbia etc.. However, to build a second rate highway at a price of the Serbian tax payers while Ilic gets his kick backs and pays off his cronies..just disgusts me. The Serbian people deserve to hear the truth. If he is "as clean as a tear" well then let the truth set you free and publish everything.

Well Princip although I share your desire for decent roads - God knows we need them in this country, I think transparency and an accountable government are also key issues.

Balkan politicians have for too long behaved as if the people owe them a living. It is the other way round.

There is a standard to be respected in public office and its too bad if Ilic tries to 'spite' the media just because they are enquiring into the contract.

There is also a wider issue - it may not be classic corruption but this issue may point to the fact that the Serbian government lies in the lap of big business. ie they give too good a deal to partner companies and as a result the taxpayer is being robbed.

If this is going on then it is at odds with the impression Ilic is trying to give - as if (good) 'old' Serbia is trying to resist 'modern' practice in government. Rather it would be a case of capitalist ethics of giving big business priority over the people.

If this is whats going on people have a right to know. On the other hand if it turns out that nothing untoward is in question then great.

The key point should be that the motorway is built to a high standard and in a quick and efficient manner. The tolls are only part of the benefit that this infrastructure will bring economically. There will be jobs and services while the roads are built but in addition following completion it will open up Serbia's products to more markets - lets not lose sight of the full picture that this valuable infrastructure project will bring. If you want intrigue into doggy business deals look into BAE arms deals and £1 billion (yes a Billion pounds sterling) back payments to Saudi princes not amendements to contracts which would have been the commercial lawyers tightening up contracts on behalf of their clients - and that in itself is another lesson for the future. In 2027 the road will revert back to the state completly and at that time Serbia will have changed so much and will hopefully have an extensive modern transport system to be proud of.
