So, Joe, what do you think about the Hungarian security guards being involved in the abduction and rape of 3 Hungarian women? This is a real crime with physical evidence, unlike the alleged stories reported against Serbs with no medical evidence:

Budapest security guards accused of kidnapping and rape
Five security guards are alleged to have kidnapped three women and raped one of them in Budapest's District XI on Tuesday evening, reported Nobert Farkas, spokesperson for the Budaörs Police Department Crime Division.

The guards were driving along Kõérberki út in a BMW sedan at around 1 a.m. and invited the women to come with them. After the women refused their offer, the men reappeared in a second car.

According to Farkas, one of the suspects then claimed he was a police officer and told the women that they were being taken into custody for 72 hours, after which the men then took the women to an industrial site. Two of the women were then allegedly forced into a trailer, while the third was tied, beaten and raped in a nearby shipping container. The group reportedly let the women leave after the incident.

The victims called the police from a nearby petrol station. The authorities arrived shortly thereafter and found the suspects still at the scene of the crime. One of them reportedly had a gas pistol license but no guns were found on the spot.

The suspects told police that the women were prostitutes but that they had rejected an offer of Ft 15,000 for their services. The men deny the allegations of violence.

The District XI Police are investigating the case.

What a shame that I was so busy that I could not see this site during the day.
Two things hit me:
- Maybe B92 was not fully informed but it is much much more than the bullying of school kids because of some songs. I follow this for some time on the biggest Hungarian site in Vojvodina. The main group consist of Serb joungsters of age 19-20, who are attacking, beating young Hungarians, when they way outnumber them (kind of Serbian bravery in number). The worst actor in all these atrocities is the local police chief. Instead of at least reprimending the attackers and warning them he treatend the parents of the young Hungarians, who dared to protest. Sounds familiar? Is it the usual story all over Serbia? Recently there was this case in the Presevo Valley with an other police chief. All this must sound very familiar to K-Albanians of this site.
- The real repugnant thing however is to see the likes of Kate on this site, who minimize such attacks and blame the victimes. Do they have a concience at all? They fight for justice for their people but deny egual justice for others. They push their propaganda - fairly unsuccessfully - that Vojvodina is an ethnic paradise. You can lie just as much.

When I was in high school in Chicago I heard of an incident where a Serb student who was glad to stand and take the American pledge of allegiance went and slapped a Hungarian one who refused to stand becuase he said his father told him not to.Serbs have been very patriotic Americans but I have heard from several sources that many Hungarians do not respect the laws of their host countries. Many Romanians here in Chicago have told me that many ethnic Hungarians in Romania refuse to communicate with them in the Romanian language even though the Hungarians were born and raised in Romania.

Jentoffee, let's get real here! These were CHILDREN, not organized Nazi state sponsored activities. How would I feel? I grew up in the land of the free, America. I was bullied on a weekly basis because my name was Zoran, and not Joe, Tim, Chuck, Bill, etc. Don't tell me about discrimination! This all happened in the "melting pot" of the world. Serbia is not the Melting pot of the world. The Hungarians who live in Serbia are not being "bullied" other than isolated incidents, this is just another attempt to demonize Serbs so Hungary can have an excuse to reclaim Vojvodina. By the way, despite all the bullying & physical assaults I endured, I still sung the American national anthem proudly and hold no ill-will for the stupid actions of the perpetrating children.

jentoffee

Zoran, How would you like your children being bullied into singing a patriotic song about another nation? Patriotism is a choice that each individual makes- when you are patriotic it often comes from the fact that you are proud of your heritage and teh country you live in, as well as the states actions against others. Maybe the hungarian children feel no affiliation with Serbia because they experience marginalisation adn discrimination on a daily basis. Forcing people to sing national anthems has remnants of a nazi state, is this how you want Serbia to be perceived? I do not think this is ther best way forward if Serbia is attempting to bring itself to the forefront in European and global politics.

Vojvodina is a truly multiethnic region like no other. There are six official languages in it and the over twenty minorities are loyal to the country. Why don't the Albanians learn something from them?

Srboslav

Colina,
Obviously MANY albanians don't fel the same like you do. And since your motherland Albania don't accept or recognize dual citizenship, why should Serbia give passports to albanians?

That is a REAL stupidity our government is doing :-( to bad actually.

Better call out the Army to protect these helpless Hungarian children from having to sing the National Anthem of the country they were born in and live in. This is not a situation for the Interior Ministry to be involved in, let the parents of the children deal with this. How about the Hungarians integrating into Serbian society, there is a reason the country is called Serbia!

kate

Jentoffee - Good point, although arguably Wales has its own recognised language within the UK so is a bit different. The UK does very well at attempting to integrate people and are generally very tolerant (unfortunately bigotry exists everywhere).

Olf

I agree with A. Shelmerdine that this is a case of bullying but at the same time in this statement as calling Hungarians for caution. To any K-Albanian this would remind 1989 – 1999 when locals and Serbian army underwent state of apartheid and organised terror against them.

In recent posts, when acts of violence or destruction of property has been perpetrated by young people against Serbs the response by some posters was, “Oh, its just teenagers doing teenager things”.
To judge this inappropriate act of two young Serbs by a different standard is a clear indication that the poster is anti-Serb and just a hypocrite.

jentoffee

Any form of intolerance on the basis of race, religion, gender etc should be tackled vehemently. The case of the bullying in Vojvodina runs much deeper than play ground mischief. I believe it reflects the true feelings of many serbs and the feelings of superiority have clearly tricked down to the minds of innocent children. Tolerance needs to be taught in every home, school and institution in the world. How is a person supposed to become integrated if their heritage and ancestry is not recognised? Integration and societal cohesion has to come from all members of society not just the 'newcomers'.

By the way Kate, I don't claim that the UK is a fully integrated and tolerant society, but we do have multi lingual road signs, in wales and china town.

Another point, if these sort of overreactions are a frequent occurance, they loose their impact, and eventually you'll have people not even taking notice. Very dangerous! I mean, what's Mr Pastor expecting from Belgrade, issuing a personal detention to the boys allegedly involved, come on!

kate

Anthony - I agree totally with what you say. I also deplore any sort of racism or bigotry by any group, and while it must be dealt with this does seem like an over reaction.

Many people on this site couldn't begin to imagine how multi-ethnic the UK is today, sometimes well integrated and sometimes not. But nowhere, even in areas with a predominant non British nationality do we have street signs in different languages as well as English. They have this all over the place in Vojvodina, which at least shows a level of respect and acceptance.

I totally denounce discrimination against ethnic minorities, but it seems alittle bit of an overreaction on the part of Mr Pastor, in issuing an open letter to the Interior Minister. I mean the incidences mentioned are nothing more then school kids mucking about and causing trouble, hardly the beginning of the end for the Hungarian community.
Aside from that, I haven't lived in the Balkans but it seems ethnic minorities, where ever they may be are entitled to special privileges. No ones asking you to abandon your heritage, but you do have a new home now. Shouldn't you atleast try to integrate into society? Shouldn't you have to know the language of the land, how else are you suppose to communicate with others around you? No wonder there are all these problems, it's just a continued mentality, of 'us vs them'. Minorities should be proud of their new homeland and should want to integrate, otherwise, what's the point of being a part of society?

School bullies are the responsibility of the immediate authority (local education authority or local police chief) and not central government. I deplore any form of racist behaviour towards Hungarians in Serbia. However, 500,000 Magyars.... 2 incidents of graffitti, a nasty case of bullying.... hardly a government sponsered pogrom (like 2004 in Kosovo and Metohija). The UK is considered a multi ethnic society but its black citizens have a harder life here than the Magyars of Serbia.

serbia should worry about the serbia proper before serbs themself will ask for devorce from belgrade, such as Nish to become independent state among many other parts of serbia.
