How can polt be so flippant. It shows he has no understanding of what is happening. It is obvious Kosovo will never be the same, even the most nationalist Serbs realise this, but these kind of comments do not help anyone. He just weakens US policy with his myopia.

1244 is still fully in effect! Serbia/Montenegro became the successor state to Yugo and since Montenegrin independence Serbia became the successor state. I can't remember how many times someone has said 1244 does not apply because Yugo does not exist, anything to justify taking Serbian sovereign territory.

From the comments I read here it seems like the Serbs are indeed happy that their government is jeopardizing relations with the international community so as Polt says they are grateful to Russia and its government.
Each day I visit this site I see more and more anti-US anti-UK, anti-French comments.

Good observation - when the people from the African nations get assistance from the Italian or Spanish ("EU") government for washing up on their shores "illegally", it's totally different than when you have a bunch of albanians desecrating holy buildings and invading your home(s) with weapons. Although it's usually a deluge of people, these Africans come with good intentions - trying to make a better life for themselves & their families. The albanians just invaded.

One tends to be a bit "different" in one's views & who one should support/back up.

My response to US ambassador to Belgrade Michael Polt is that every case is unique and therefore Kosovo and Metohija cannot possibly be, an only, unique case.
The international community illegally occupied, claiming humanitarian grounds, to what is now Serbian sovereign territory. Mr. Polt this cannot possibly give the international community the legal right to now dismember Serbian sovereign territory and hand it to an ethnic minority living in a southern province of this country.
This action can only open the floodgates for any separatist group.
15 percent of Serbia's sovereign territory is not up for grabs.
If ambassador Polt had the faintest respect for the historic and religious importance of Kosovo and Metohija for the Serbian nation, he would not even consider what he is attempting.
It takes someone with Serbian heritage to realise what an American is unable to comprehend.

my dear johny, I would just say the opposite, Albanians have jeopardized their standing in this hole issue by burning down hundreds of years old churches (!) and then even having the nerve to claim those churches were bases of the "serbian secret service".

that´s something the whole world has seen and unanimously declared as barbarianism.

as to Mr.Polt, ...if Kosmet is not that important, how about letting it be an internal affair of the Republic of Serbia?
if so unimportant, why then letting the Russians degrade the US in the UNSC?

A very typical example of US arrogance and incompetence. If the US government loves the Kosovo Albanians so much they should reserve a nice piece around Crawford, TX so they can be with their former emperor once he will finally leave the political world stage. Maybe the UN should start checking which Kosovo Albanians were actually born in Kosovo and those who are not should be given a single trip to Tirana (and not like the hoax created in 1999 when the Serbs were so-called cleansing Kosovo; all was set up by NATO and people fled because of bombing; portraining the Serbs as Nazis deporting Albanians like what has unfortunately happened to many Jewish people in WWII is a huge insult to people who suffered so much from the Nazis and who were one of the few who have resisted occupation from very early on). Once all the Serbs from Kosovo have returned this 90% Albanian majority will have srinked dramatically (probably to 50% or so). It has been unfortunate that in 1999 Vladimir Putin was not president of Russia because otherwise the US and NATO would not have dared to attack Serbia. Europe has already made an historic mistake by participating in the illegal bombing of Serbia and it cannot afford another betray of Serbia. Except from Germany and maybe the UK many EU countries do not want an independent Kosovo (a Muslim state on Orthodox Christian soil).

The viable solution is found to be through the contact group, therefore legitimizing the separation. Failure to go through UN will just made it harder for serbs in Kosova since it will now depend on albanians will to implement Ahtisari's reccomendations. I'm starting to understand how serbs glorify defeats.

Future generations will judge mr. Polt and all the other friends of Srbija. What Serbs want now, it is my belief, is to make life of the people of Kosovo as difficult as possible. All they are being is destructive and obstructive, about anything in Kosovo. Mr. Polt is only being very honest (as he usualy is) but our people have not yet reached the point to understand who our real friend are. Another generation wasted.

Wim

If Polt wants to be taken seriously he should start explaining why the position of Kosovo's Serbs is as bad as it is. Then he should explain how the Ahtisaari proposals will iomprove that. And finally he will need to explain why those recommendations are not introduced before Kosovo's independence. That was what "standards before status" was about.

Stevan T: "UN Resolution 1244 which expressly states that Kosovo is part of Serbia."

I don't know what resolution did you read, but UN Resulution 1244 (which soon will become history) states that Kosovo is a part of Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Nowhere did it mention Serbia.
And last time I checked, Yugoslavia does not exists anymore. This means that Kosovo is even de juro independent.

So now leading up to November the media propaganda war begins! The Media will play an important part here just as they did leading up to the illegal NATO war against Serbia. But this time the Serb Government will participate in the Media wars. The biggest battle they lost in 1999 was the media war. The conflict itself was in fact not lost since it resulted in Resolution 1244. Serbia is much smarter now and is prepared to take the west on in the media, what they have going for them and the west DOES NOT is the LAW!

Roger7

Russia did not “stall” the process but rather, the US failed in their attempts to disregard and circumvent international law. It seems that Mr. Polt continues to be a mouthpiece for another failed US foreign policy issue and he looks incompetent and hypocritical in doing so. He knows the US would never tolerate 15% of their nation being torn away by internal or external forces. Because Mr. Polt says it is not precedent setting, does not make it so and it is insulting to think he would try to convince me otherwise.

Stevan T

“For the first time ever the international community entered a state and took over the administration of its part,” he explained.

I thought that they entered under an ägreement" Mr Polt.
UN Resolution 1244 which expressly states that Kosovo is part of Serbia.

“What is more, the Ahtisaari plan that has been criticized here offers protection for those very rights Serbia deems imperative. The plan vested the international community with an obligation to guarantee that Serbia could keep exercising these rights which belong to the people and not to a piece of land.”

But after all these years with the most powerfull armies in the world, Non-muslim people are living in conditions seen only in the worst ghettos of the world.

WHERE IS THE SECURITY AND THE CO-EXISTENCE THE UN PROMISED?

ARE YOU, MR POLT NOT PART OF THE PROBLEM INSTEAD OF THE SOLUTION?
UNITED STATES AS A WHOLE UNDERSTANDS STRENGTH AND ECONOMIC VIABILITY. SERBIA SHOULD KEEP BUILDING ITS ECONOMY BY BI-LATERAL AGREEMENTS WITH COUNTRIES THAT COULD CONTRIBUTE SOMETHING TO THEIR SUCCESS AND STOP PRETENDING THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE SOLUTION OR SET OF COUNTRIES THAT COULD HELP THEM

The Contact group will not be as forgiving this time around even with the likes of Russia whose contribution amounted to throwing a spanner every time a proposal was put forward. Whatever the outcome of the new talks, those in Serbia will come back and say “Ahtisaari’s plan wasn’t that bad after all.” Serbia needs to understand that sometimes you need to make the most of an unfavorable situation. I can’t see Serbia gaining any concessions this time round.

In fact once independence is declared the Kosova government will open up Kosovo Polje to all those of Ottoman decent to come round and pay homage to those whose lives were lost in the battle at Kosova Polje. You may even see a monument of some kind dedicated to their victory provided they don’t also lay claim to the whole of Kosova as their spiritual heartland. Microsoft will also have people in place to change the settings on Windows to ensure Kosova does not come up as a spelling mistake.

This "so called diplomat" is rude, arrogant, and an embarrassment to the USA. How dare he speak in such a condescending manner to a sovereign country's leaders? But when you listen to the way his boss, Bush the little emperor, speaks, it then makes sense. These politicians only know their way, and criticize other opinions as being wrong, stall-tactics, short-sighted, obstructionist, etc. But they have done such a fine job in Afganistan and Iraq, that the rest of the world really should respect what they say.

This man is so incompetent that it boggles the mind. What he fails to mention is that Serbia was bombed around the clock for 78 days, ILLEGALY, when the US bypassed the UN, which according to international law is a war crime. This means that Clinton, Albright, Hollbrooke and Co. should be sitting in the Hague. What he also fails to mention is that UN Resolution 1244 guarantees the territorial integrity of Serbia, and all Serb refugees are to be returned and Serbian border guards returned to their posts. Has any of this happened, of course not, and Mr. Polt does not want you to know about it. The statement that Kosovo would not set a precedent is pure ignorance and propoganda. There are separatists movements around the world watching this case very very closely just ready to pounce if greater albania were to happen. In addition, what about Bosnia Mr. Polt? It is also administered by an international organization and the 99.9% of Republika Srpska want nothing to do with the rest of Bosnia. I

It's statements from people like Polt that make me not support my country's push to carve up another country.

The first comment of Kosovo not setting a precedent in ludicrous because numerous other breakaway provinces from Nagorno-Karabakh to Transdniestr are looking at this situation very carefully. That Polt does not, or chooses not, to see this, attests to how far my country's government has out on blinders to the rest of the world.

Secondly, that Polt could actually have the nerve to say “If it indeed makes you [Serbia] happy that your government stalls the process, jeopardizing relations with neighboring states and the international community, then you should indeed be grateful to Russia and to your government.” While saying in the same speech he has respect for Serbia's historical interest, it's no wonder we are hated and feared throughout the world for showing absolutely no regard for any country's right to sovereignty. Polt wants Serbia to "see the light" so to say, but is essentially saying "you're too stupid to do anything if you don't see things our way."

Such arrogance. Such hubris.

The reason that KosovO isn't independent is due to the fact that the media needs time to build this up like a soap opera. We all know that KosovO will remain a part of Serbia. Russia's VETO power has proven to make a team of people stop in their tracks .

PB

If it were such a done deal then declare Kosovo's independence TODAY. Why waiting? Why the insistence on a UN resolution? Very simple, Mr Polt understands full well that unless the specific resolution which would state that Kosovo would not set a precedent is passed at the UN, any group of people in the futre can claim independence and use Kosovo as a case in point.

Using Mr Polt's argument, if Russia were to invade and administer Nagorno-Karabakh, wouldthat be "intervention" or an invasion. No doubt it would be portrayed by the US as an invasion!

Except from Germany and maybe the UK many EU countries do not want an independent Kosovo (a Muslim state on Orthodox Christian soil).

my dear johny, I would just say the opposite, Albanians have jeopardized their standing in this hole issue by burning down hundreds of years old churches (!) and then even having the nerve to claim those churches were bases of the "serbian secret service".

that´s something the whole world has seen and unanimously declared as barbarianism.
and each and every there are more and more poeple getting in touch with those informations...

as to Mr.Polt, ...if Kosmet is not that important, how about letting it be an internal affair of the Republic of Serbia?
if so unimportant, why then letting the Russians degrade the US in the UNSC?

johny says ~

1244 is still fully in effect! Serbia/Montenegro became the successor state to Yugo and since Montenegrin independence Serbia became the successor state. I can't remember how many times someone has said 1244 does not apply because Yugo does not exist, anything to justify taking Serbian sovereign territory.

How can polt be so flippant. It shows he has no understanding of what is happening. It is obvious Kosovo will never be the same, even the most nationalist Serbs realise this, but these kind of comments do not help anyone. He just weakens US policy with his myopia.
