I hope that effectivelly partitioning Kosovo between Albanians and Serbs is something that can be negotiated and accepted by all sides. If Albanians and Serbs do not want and cannot live together, there is no other realistic option that can provide stability. The compromise can be reached so that Albanians have full autonomy and Serbs too, while preserving current territoral integrity.

Ahmet, are you here to ever say something constructive, or just to provoke and be insulting? Whatever, it's your hate, live with it. Personally, I believe neither side should be granted the province. It should just be an EU administered zone, that would slowly be incorporated into the EU. Call it the EU nation of Kosovo. That would shut ALL the politicians up, and the EU could procede to make that area productive and free of crime. And the people living there can concentrate on improving their lives, and not man-made borders. God did not put lines through continents when he created the world.

BlueJ - It is the international community's responsibility to try and help Kosovo to be reintegrated into Serbia.
Of course it won't be easy or immediate, but with support it is possible. Kosovo would obviously remain very autonomous.

If Serbia manages to prevent Kosovo from getting independent and thus to stall the logical end of the break-up of Yugoslavia, Kosovo will be like an iron ball locked around Serbia's ankle. Yes, kate, it would mean that international law would be upheld and that sovereign netion would not be carved by western ambitions, and you can cheer for that, but I would still see it as another blunder of Serbian politics. I can't imagine how Serbia could deal with the ambitions of 2 million K-Albanians, given the recent history of the whole region. Worst scenario is some kind of European Union's own Gaza-strip, and our grandchildren posting comments on this same issue.

Then again, maybe Kostunica knows what he is doing, and this is really for the best of Serbia, but somehow I doubt it.

Serbia might be prepared for new talks, and the 120 days given are certainly able to provide the time for such talks, but Serbia must bear in mind that independence for Kosovo is still not off the table. They can negotiate as better deal, they can formalize parallel institutions with the Serb sectors, and they could even push for a Dayton-like confederation of Kosovo, but the West will not be so easily persuaded to nullify moves to grant the troubled province independence. Still, everything should be done through legal channels, and unilateral moves on all sides should be avoided at all costs.

Enjoy the weekend everyone.

If this happens, I hope that Resolution 1244 is rolled into any new resolution (ie. the return of refugees, protection of heritage etc.). This mandate needs to be fulfilled ASAP.

If independence is no longer on the table, the current Kosovo government is going to have to prove their diplomatic skills by agreeing to talks and disuading elements of the population from violence.
